For any of you who have done any hiking in the mountains that run through and surround Los Angeles, you know that there are plenty of rattlesnakes around, whether you see them or not.
As if we don’t have enough snakes, the red hot Arizona Diamondbacks are now in town. As good as the Dodgers have been in the last three weeks or so, the D’backs have been better. It looks like it might be a fun series. Ted Lilly starts tonight against Joe Saunders.
The MLB.com article at the Dodgers web site has more details:
…While the D-backs have won more games since the All-Star break than every team but the Phillies, one thing that has remained consistent all season long has been the variety of lineup cards manager Kirk Gibson has filled out. Entering Monday, Gibson had penciled 107 different lineups (not including pitchers) over 147 games this season.
Sunday’s newest change was hitting newly acquired Aaron Hill in the three-spot, a position he hasn’t hit in since 2008.
“In reality, I think the game has changed a bit right now,” Gibson said. “If you have the personnel, [it’s changed] even more so. When I was a player, you wanted to play 155, 160 games. Maybe there’s no reason for that; maybe there is. But you have to keep everybody healthy. You have to keep everybody engaged. Maybe I look at it a little differently, but you have to know your players.”…
This Day in Dodgers History
September 12, 1963 – With former Dodger teammates, including Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe and Ralph Branca, in attendance, Duke Snider is honored by the Mets who hold his ‘night’ at the Polo Grounds, in a game that coincidentally marks the last time the Giants, now located in San Francisco, will ever play in their once long-time home. The ‘Silver Fox’, obtained by the expansion team in in April and who recently asked to be traded to a contender, tells the crowd at the Harlem ball park, “I look up into the stands, and it looks like Ebbets Field. The Mets are wonderful, but you can’t take the Dodger out of Brooklyn”.
If you have the personnel, who for him have been gritty players with no fear, pounding it out and whatnot, then you can do what the D’Backs have done this season.
With a mind as rich as his and as well respected as he is, he understands his players much like Mattingly does. Only difference between the two, just so happens to be the personnel both where handed at the start of the season. The further detail may be the fact that the D’Backs traded for help at the Deadline, while we were in limbo.
Young players play to stay and establish themselves. Old timers just get paid ala Schmidt.
GO DODGERSS!!!!
If we strictly compare the personnel of the D’Backs and the Dodgers at the beginning of the season, I’m not sure that you could predict which would fare much better. There’s no doubt that the D’Backs performed better and maybe got through with less injuries. How much of that relates to motivation, ownership issues, and team trainers, etc. is debatable. I for one wouldn’t put Gibson and Mattingly quite in the same category of management talent. Needless to say, Conte has no equal among his peers, nor, of course, does Frank. I hope this is an exciting series; otherwise, may the best team win.
Oh, and Ned? Strictly bottom of the pile talent, although using the word talent with Ned is an oxymoron.
Regarding Ned’s comments about tinkering during the coming off-season:
We are in a world of hurt in the infield. Whether or not Casey Blake retires, we have a big hole at third base. Miles cannot fill that hole, he is more of a second baseman. Uribe will be asked to fill the hole, but he will come up short just like this year. Will Sellers be able to handle second base next year? So far, his offense has not be enough. We’ll have to see how he does over the last three weeks of the season.
Hi’Ya Outsiders. Well, stinker of a game yesterday, but, we did take 2 of 3 from the fast fading G’Aints and for all practicle purposes, killed what faint hopes they had of overtaking the D’Backs and making the playoffs. Some consolation in this trying season. Doesn’t really change the fact that we still have an overall lousy team and a spin jockey GM that has no clue when it comes to baseball talent. The following article is a pretty good summary of Neds latest comments and what they really mean. I do think season tickets for next year are going to be a hard sell.
http://mikesciosciastragicillness.com/2011/09/12/ned-colletti-thinks-the-dodgers-are-close-to-contending-because-of-course-he-does/
The short translation to me is that Frank is still broke and more interested in his own agenda than the on field product. Ned is still a baseball doofus and will misspend whatever budget Frank gives him to work with. Just as an example, Guerrier is signed to make 4.75M next year and in 2013. Almost 5M for a mediocre at best middle reliever. Billz and Lilly, at 19.5M next year, are signed at 2, 3 starter money and are basically 4 and 5 starters. And finally, Uribe is set to dazzle us next year to the tune of 8M. That’s 32.25M commited to 4 non impact players before they even get into arbitration with Kemp, Kersh, and Ethier. Bottom line folks; alot more dumpster diving for washed up/never were plug ins to get overpaid and block the path of a younger inexpensive player that could provide the same or better production.
Until Frank and Ned are gone, Systemic Ineptitude will be the organizations byword for the foreseeable future.
Or, as Tru and myself like to call it:
PATHETICALLY UNACCEPTABLE FUTILITY!!!!!!
So once-dependable veterans like Hiroki Kuroda and Casey Blake both have a pain in the neck. Most of us OTD’ers are also afflicted with a pain – that pain is named Ned & Frank!
They are a royal pain in the ass to me!
Jhall ~ I read that artice earlier and loved that most people agree with us on the sad state of affairs for our team. I loved the part about not believing a word that comes out of Ned;s mouth.
LOL!! Yep, most people are onto Ned. However, with paid attendance of over 30K per game, Frank and Ned are still hood winking alot of people.
The Times says attendance is down 18%, with a swelling number of no-shows. So, even though they announce 30K paid, they are losing their asses in parking, concessions, souveniers, etc. If McCrook is still the owner next season, they will NOT have 30K paid per game. The fans have spoken. Now, let;s get the mother-fu*ker out of L.A.
Very accurate synopsis, Wally.
Thanks Sparky!!!
I was just told Josh is joining the Arizona Diamondbacks. Hmmm!
Makes sense. His predecessor in the PR department with the Dodgers, Derrick Hall, is now the D’backs president. I guess he likes the promotion (his, not the team’s) possibilities better in Arizona.
I have the feeling that, either he was let go by Frankie or, he couldn’t take any more crap from said owner!
He is just a rat deserting a sinking ship!
Very smart to find a better job and get out of the insane asylum.
It was just confirmed according to a note on the side of the page from Dylan Hernandez.
Tru, I put a link on your original comment.
Thanks 🙂
News moves fast on Twitter… no wonder he wanted to give up on ITD.

Wonder if Bear will be pissed off or happy 😉
While it has been fun and interesting watching the Dodgers the past few weeks, there certainly should be no illusions that the current play (and possibly players) mean anything with regard to next season. Certainly Miles, Carroll, Rivera and Barajas have made positive contributions but it might be argued these players have done the best they can with their limited abilities. Is this good enough to challenge the league’s stronger teams? Even Ned Colletti cannot really believe that. While the effort and energy from Sellers, Gordon and Sands certainly get your attention, have you seen anything that convinces you any of these guys have the talent to become better than average players? We hope so but we don’t know for sure, unlike how most of us felt about Kemp and Ethier when they were fighting for a starting job. So what does any of this mean? It means the Dodgers still need pretty much the same thing they have needed for years with no way to get them.
Gordon is the real deal, although he’s got some rough edges, especially routine defense and walks. Sellers? It’s too early to tell. Sands – doesn’t look like he can hit MLB pitchers on a consistent basis. Same thing for Mitchell.
I love Sellers’ defense and he has a sweet swing…given the chance I think he will be great. Gordon really needs to sharpen his defensive skills. Dee also needs to eat some burgers!
Right now, Sellers is looking the best in my opinion. I think he will be next years Carroll for this team. I’m still on the fence about Gordon. He is still very young and needs alot of seasoning but the potential is there. He needs to work on his plate discipline and get his OBP up to .350 or better to be an effective lead off hitter. Sands is tanking so far and we haven’t seen enough of Mitchel to make an informed decision. If past performance is any indicator, Mitchell will not make it but they need to use these last 16 games to see what he may have.
I am amazed how much we think alike….kind of scared too 😉 Of course, I still disagree with you on our Dre 😉
LOL!! If Ethier looked like Uribe or Navarro, I don’t think you would be nearly as happy about his production and attitude. JMO. But that is certainly OK. To each his own. There really is no hard and fast right or wrong on the subject. Time will tell.
Thank god he doesn’t look like them!
Honestly, it isn’t Dre’s looks. It’s the person I like. He was very nice when we met him and that means a lot.

LMAO!!! Very nice 32!!!
That is funny!!! #veryclever
From earlier, next year we already have 32.25M committed to Lilly, Billz, Uribe, and Grrrear. Plus, we still have deferred payments of 16.4625M to Manny, Andruw, Pierre, and Kuroda. That’s 48.7125M already gone and not much to show for it. I am not sure but I think we still owe Furcal a 3M deferred payment next year. That would put the total at 51.7125M.
Add another 2.75M to buyout Garland and Blakes 2012 options.
Total now at 54.4625M.
Now we come to the arbitration eligible players. Kemp, Kersh, Ethier, Loney, and Kuo.
Kemp and Kersh are going to get (and deserve) big raises. Estimate Kemp to get 12 to 13M. Kersh 6 to 7M. That’s 18 to 20M for the 2 no brain keepers.
Total now at 72.7125 to 74.7125M.
Ethier ,9.25M this year which he did not earn and will probably seek a raise in arbitration. Considering the team can only cut a players salary by a maximum of 20%, the club could offer as low as 7.4M. He will probably come back with a figure of 11 or 12M. So let’s just assume they settle at 10M. Way too much for an already declining, low power, attitude challenged, mediocre defense, doesn’t hit lefties 30 year old.
Total now at 82.7125 to 84.7125M.
Loney made 4.875M this year and should be non tendered but will probably get 5 to 7M in arbitration. Let’s say 5M as an estimate.
And finally Kuo. At 2.725M this year. He will probably be non tendered but I will assume that if he is not non tendered he will get 3M. That’s 8M on the conservative side if they are brought back.
Total now at 90.7125 to 92.7125M. And that doesn’t include all the young non arbitration eligible players.
Let’s figure about 3M for players like Sands, Gordon, Jansen, Guerra, etc….
Total is now, 93.7125 to 95.7125M.
I don’t see alot of money to play with here for a bankrupt owner. Last years payroll was about 114.196M. So, if payroll stays the same, Ned will have around 18 to 22M to work with if Loney and Kuo are tendered, and 26 to 30M if they are not.
Considering Ned’s signing history and Franks financial constraints, the outlook as the Magic 8 Ball would say, “IS GRIM.”
Does it really matter how much money Frank gives Ned? Ned’s proven time and again he’s not competent enough to be a [dodger] dog catcher. He’s wasted virtually every dime he’s ever been given (to the tune of somewhere around $350-$400M) with nothing to even show for it.
Actually, I’m thinking with no money to spend, Ned’s in a much better position not to handicap the team any further with stupid 3-year contracts for crappy ballplayers.
So true!
Hi’Ya Beav!!! Well said. I totally agree. That is the reason I have been saying for a long while now that replacing Ned is the easiest and fastest way to improve the team since Frank has things tied up in the courts.
Maybe Frank is cleaning house…first Josh and perhaps, Ned is next!
Damn, how sweet would that be!!? Next best thing to getting rid of Frank!!!
I am just assuming that a new owner would shitcan Ned. I don’t see the team on the field ever getting much better with Ned pulling the strings as the GM. Regardless of who the owner is.
They are doing a survey on what the fans want for Fan Appreciation Day and, the best suggestion I saw was: Free shirts that say, “I was at Frank’s last game as owner:. It would be a sell-out…standing room only 😉
No doubt!!
Funny lineup. I have no axe to grind with Josh. He did a decent but difficult job and he did try to connect to the fans. It can’t be easy trying to put a positive spin on what has been going on with the Dodgers the past few years and who could blame him for leaving for a better position and getting away from all the uncertainty surrounding the Dodgers.
Well said Birky. Good luck Josh.
I hope that some time in the future when Josh writes his book, he will relate what he really thought about McCourt and the whole situation in LA without any PR spin.
I admire Josh. He is smart enough to find a better place and get out before it was too late. I am far too blunt to be able to play the PR/political game. I don’t have the stomach to cover up all the crap caused by Frank.
Hi OTD.
Well it looks like Josh will be leaving, no wonder the threads never change much any more. It’s sort of sad for me since Josh did the arrangements for me for my LA trip, which I’ll never forget.
I guess that’s how it goes in this business. I wish him continued success.
I’m looking forward to seeing how much better the D’Backs are than us. This should be quite a test for the Dodgers. I, of course, want to see them win the division but I feel they’re far enough ahead of the Giants to withstand defeat. So they’ll be no rooting for them against our beloved Bums.
I agree!! Go Dodgers!! The D’Backs lead is big enough. Let’s whip’em and finish this year above .500. And possibly ahead of the G’Aints.
I enjoyed the ITD tour also, OBF. Josh did a wonderful job and it was great meeting all of our bloggers.
OBF, well said about Josh. I have fond memories of that ITD tour of Dodger Stadium and your smiling face. And I agree that while I don’t want to see the D’Backs lose any ground to the Giants, I too cannot root against the Dodgers. If the D’Backs are that much better, things will be taken care of on the field.
I see Miles is starting and playing 3B again today. Coincidence????
I don’t like it.
I’m not crazy about the idea either. I’m getting the impression that Ned is looking at Miles as our everyday 3B next year. Or 2B with Uribe at 3B. Sad that there is not a better 3B option in our farm system than Miles. They obviously aren’t too keen on Mitchell.
I still think it would be fun to see Dee (ss) and Sellers (2b) for the season to see what they can do. Put Uribe’s ass on 3rd, if we have to….maybe the surgury won’t work and he won’t play at all.
I could live with that!!! Unfortunately, our best bet is probably for Uribe to not be able to come back from his injuries. It’s funny, but with Uribe, he doesn’t have far to come back. Not like he ever set the bar very high. LOL!! Hopefully the Dodgers have insurance on him. Then we could move on and let the insurance pay his salary.
Once again, that goes back to Ned and his incredible stupidity. You can’t blame Uribe, Lilly, and Grrrear for taking the contracts if someone was stupid enough to offer them. Everyone in baseball knew they were not good contracts and what those players brought to the table. They are actually performing just about as I and most people expected.
No Uribe…that’ s good for me.
I just read that Manny was arrested in Miami 😉 I couldn’t find any details yet.
LOL!! Keep us posted Tru!!!
Domestic violence!
Well if he’s guilty, I hope they sock it to his sorry ass. He will buy his way out of it most likely.
Geez, I wish Lilly wasn’t pitching tonight. I wonder how many rocket shots he will surrender?!
I got the over +2..he’ll be out by the 4th..
Matt gets his HR and maybe Loney gets lucky and drives in 2..
That’s my predictions..
Hell, I think he will give up 2 to Upton alone….I’m going for 4 and, then, Donnie will get somebody up in the pen!
I CALLED MATTY’S HR…
I wonder how many people will be there to see it. I bet they don’t get 10K people actually in the park tonight.
It’s early but, it does look pretty bare. After an inning or so, we will get a better idea of how many are there. You know how the Dodger fans always show up late 😉
Yep. Keep me posted Trumom!! Thanks!!
8,000 if lucky and they count the cars in the parking lot as a person, and include the workers there too..
I’m not surprised!!
Broxton done for the season officially..
lol..
Weird day indeed.
1. Josh packs his bags and bounces to Hall’s staff
2. D’Backs in town
3. Manny arrested*
4. Broxton done
what more can we add before the end of the week.
Broxtons been done since the Yankees and Torre abused him.
JoJo was/is an overrated clown and a pitcher killer.
The Dodgers have had their very own version of “Killer Clowns From Outer Space” with Frank, Ned, and JoJo. Mattingly, Conte, and Honeycutt doing nicely in supporting roles I might add.

Good call. If he gets hot, he can still reach 40.
You sure did! Do it again 😉 I’d like Jerry to get one.
:))
I don’t know what the logic is, but, you know your scrapping the bottom of the barrell when you have to use Miles as your everyday 3B and number 5 hitter. He’s done a credible job for what he is, but I certainly hope Ned realizes your not going to build a playoff contending team that way. Miles is idealy a parttime player and #2 or #8 hitter.
Just like Carroll.
I’m just pissed off because I like watcching Tattoo play! He has a better glove than both of them.
I’m with you on that. Doesn’t make any sense to me. Why not play Mitchell and Sellers. We know what Miles and Carroll can do. They’ve obviously given up on DeJesusJr and it is starting to appear Mitchell as well.
Tell-tale sign for Mitchell was him trying out at catcher. At 26 1/2 and a career minor leaguer, that has career saving despiration written all over it.
LOL!! That and the fact that he sucks shit. Although he is just as good as most of the dumpster shit like Thames, Gibbons, Anderson, Sweeney, etc. that Ned has been signing.
True. Mitchell’s like a composite of all of them.
What ever happened to that Pedro Baez fellow.
A 3B in the minors, and I don’t hear much about him being considered.
It probably doesn’t really matter. Ned will once again be dumpster diving this off season and he will find plenty of washed up old crap to waste money on and block a young player.
I’d rather watch a young player stink it up than a washed up PVL. And it is much cheaper. Save the money and use it to sign Kemp to a 5-7 year deal.
Me too. They better sign Matty!
Damn, I forgot, Ned doesn’t like Matt.
He’d rather have a Thames/Gibbons type player.
Yay…a bloop single for Jerry.
Ned traded away the only minor leaguer that could’ve actually helped this ballclub next season.
He always does crap like that. How the hell does he still have a job?!
Yep!! I’m surprised Ned hasn’t contacted Aaron Rowland yet. I’d say there’s a good chance we may be seeing him next year. At least it would be a freebie on the G’Aint nickel. LOL!!
Ned’s probably waiting until after the season when a spot on the 40-man opens up. I’d be willing to take bets the odds are 50/50 right now he’ll at least be invited to ST.
Okay….now, James a yes or no?
No way they go after Pujols or Fielder. They already need a 2B, 3B, C and LF. They have no choice but to resign James.
However, the gnats have 3 or 4 1st basemen. And, you know how much Ned loves gnats players.
I think there is going to be a serious money crunch and they will non tender Loney and try to resign him for less money. I’d take him for about 3 to 3.5M a year. He’s just not a 7M+/year player. Especially when the money is tight.
WAY TO GO MATTHEW RYAN KEMvP!!!!
(sorry so late)
Always better late than never, Nellyjune 😉
Go Nelly!!! We’ve been keeping your seat warm.
Don’t be surprised to see Brox invited to ST on a minor league contract either.
Give him a doughnut and he’ll be there!
Could be. He’s definately a non tender. I’m curious to see what kind of shape Uribe shows up to Spring Training in. Does he rehab hard and use the opportunity to get in great shape, or pull an Andruw Jones and stuff his freaking pie hole all winter?
Any guesses?
What izzzz????
Hey Collie!!! Are you feeling better today?
Collie, my man, we have company tonight 😉
LMAO…..who says Manny can’t hit anymore!
Oooooooh…..Nice!!!!!!!
Hey Beav. Listening to Steiner and Monday talk about how they fixed Lilly by changing his foot angle on the rubber or something. They were chuckling about what a simple thing it was and how it messed up his pitching for the first 4 months of the season.
My question is: What in the hell took Honeycutt so freaking long to figure it out? Christ, how long will it take him to figure out what’s wrong with Billz???
They say those can, do. Those that can’t, teach. And those that can’t do either become Dodger coaching material.
And players that Ned will sign to ridiculous contracts.
But, they are all grinders 😉
Hell, I fully expect Ned to get all warm and fuzzy over Eveland and decide he’s worth a 3-year contract.
Wouldn’t surprise me. Same with Miles and Rivera.
I have a feeling Lilly’s implosion is coming this inning.
Yep!
Well, maybe it won’t be a total meltdown like Billz and Kuroda.
I hope you’re wrong Tru!!! Oh well, as I was typing they just scored.
Yup. ‘Bout time for a bomb.
That was another good move, Donnie!
Freaking Grrrrear!!! Damn near worthless. And he is signed for 4.5M next year and 2013. How fucking stupid is that?
Two more great Ned contracts… How do you give an old #5 starter $33M for 3 years, and a 6th-7th inning reliever $4M for one year, let alone $12M for 3?
No eye for talent!
LOL…nailed the ump! Love it!
:))) No mercy from Tru. Atta girl!!
Well, back to the same old crap. Can’t pitch, can’t hit. Think I’m going to call it a night and watch TV. Catch y’all later.
Catch ya later Beav!!!
Shit!! Grrrear…. What a fucking waste.
And, ladies and gentlemen….the entire crowd of 5,000 loudly boos GrrrRear for his wonderful performance!
LOL!! They need to tar and feather Dildon for using Grrrear with runners on. He’s allowed over 40% of inherited runners to score dammit. Hawksworth and McDoo have been just as bad or worse. Jansen is about the only reliever we have that can actually come in and snuff out a rally.
Compliments of my pal, Jhall……..UNACCEPTABLY PATHETIC FUTILITY!!!!
Thank You, thank you…. I’ll be here all week. Be good to your servers folks.
( ( 🙂 ) )
Watched the high/low lights on GameDay. Looks like they could feed the All You Can Eat pavillion from one shopping cart.
It’s really bad….I’m serious, they would be lucky to have 6,000 there.
Boy, walk away for a short while, and the game goes all to hell. WTF?
You and Beav left us and, look what happened! 😉
Jer-ry! rbi for you!
I didn’t go anywhere. It’s that other team playing the Padres on the other channel.
Yuck!
Krud and Krap and Krap and Krud – blah!!!!!
They must be pissed off that we aren’t helping them out!
LOL!! Well, we fudged’em again tonight, but at least the G’Aints don’t gain any ground.
And not to be outdone, herrrrrrrrrrrrrre’s McDooDoo!!!! Another worthless POP.
LOL…the only time the gnats like us is if we can help them.
You won’t believe this….paid attendance: 30,616…..like I said, there aren’t more than 6,000 there.
Unbelievable!! It certainly makes a hell of a statement when over 20K people buy tickets and choose not to use them. I look for alot of those tickets to go unsold next year.
Everything I’ve been reading says pretty much the same thing: “if McCourt is owner, I wont be there”! So, I believe you are right…a lot less tickets sold.
They only sold 17K season tickets last year. Down from 28K a couple of years ago. I wouldn’t be surprised if they take another big hit next year.
If things stay the same, the fans will stay home. They have had enough. I’m glad they are smart enough to know what an ass-hole Frank is and, are trying to make mlb show him the door.
Yay….the 9th inning!
( | )~~~Pfffffffffft……..Splat!!!
.500 took a big hit tonight. Now we have to go 9-6 in the remaining games. And with Billz going tomorrow, odds aren’t in our favor.
I’ve lost all confidence in Billz.
Yep, me too.
Kemp and Sands the only guys with hits for us tonight. 7 0fers out of the 9 slots. You’d think we were facing Halliday.
Kennedy vs Billz tomorrow night. We’re hosed. Might as well hit the RedBox and rent a good movie.
Oops, spoke too soon. Carroll hustles out an infield hit.
Sounds good to me. But, you know we are gluttons for punishment…..we go down with the sinking ship.
LOL!! Good point. It is like the proverbial train wreck. You know its gonna be bad, but, ya just gotta watch.
Yep….that’s what a Dodger fan does!
Darn shame the blowpen couldn’t keep us in the game.
Well, at least they made the 9th exciting. Have a good night everybody. See you tomorrow.
Suck on that G’nats!!! Catch ya later Tru!!!
Looks like the bullpen took the night off. ;-(
GO RAIDERS!!!
SELL THE TEAM!!!!
