Bloodied, But Unbowed

October 14, 2013

How many times have we heard Vinny say those words from Invictus, by William Ernest Henley?  Well, the previous line from that literary classic sums up the first two games: Under the bludgeonings of chance.  It was not as if the Cardinals blew away the Dodgers.  In fact, they only batted .134 and scored only four runs, two more than the Dodgers.  A clutch hit in each game could have reversed the results.  Zack and Clayton pitched great games… reminiscent of the days of Koufax and Drysdale.  Unfortunately, the offense also brings to mind those days of low scoring games.  I like the story about how Don, who flew ahead of the team to prepare for a start the next day, was told that Sandy had pitched a no-hitter.  Don then queried “Did we win?”

It is going to be difficult with injuries to Hanley and Andre, but this team already proved that they can rise to the occasion and win at a .800 pace.  Given that, winning 4 of the next 5 games is not an impossible goal.

Let’s talk about the NLDS

images-2Well gang, we made it again.  It’s time for Dodger playoff baseball.  The team has marched into Atlanta seeking just three wins.  Will they triumph like General Sherman and leave Atlanta’s season in flames and ruination? Or will they succumb to the slings, arrows and tomahawks of outrageous fortune? Only in the next few days shall the answer be revealed.
