Prognosticators R Us

Back on April 4, we offered our predictions for 2012.  While it’s too early to see the final results, it is still interesting to see how the season projects for the Dodgers.  The team is playing at a .513 clip with only 10 games to go, which would come out to a 83-79 record for the season.  However, their pace in September is .421, which if continued, would result in four more wins and a 82-80 finish.

Our forecasts were:

DEric……77-85
Crash…..79-83
Koufax63..80-82
Sparky….81-81
Wally…..81-81
32/53…..82-80
Bear……83-79
Birk……83 1/2-78 1/2
Beav……84-78
Grizzy….85-77
VL4…….86-76
Tru…….87-75
Nelly…..88-74
Brooklyn..88-74
Emma…..89-73
D4life…..92-70

The original post has some other predictions, some which have already come true.

While extremely unlikely, I hope for a miracle that would make Dodger4Life the winner. 🙂

CINCINNATI — Clayton Kershaw will start for the Dodgers Sunday night in the series finale against the Reds, after all.

Manager Don Mattingly originally named Aaron Harang to start on short rest in place of Kershaw, who has been hobbled most of the month with a right hip impingement. But Mattingly left open the possibility that Kershaw might pitch if he could do it pain free. Kershaw threw a 20-pitch bullpen session on Friday and went through his normal routine on Saturday as if he were planning to pitch.

There has been no confirmation to speculation that Kershaw will need offseason surgery to correct the condition, and he has had no comment on the injury. Teammate Jerry Hairston had arthroscopic hip surgery for an impingement and torn labrum last week and is looking at a rehab of three to five months.

The Dodgers go into the game three games behind St. Louis for the second Wild Card berth in the National League with 10 games to play.

  5. Another BIG GAME with the Dodgers hanging by a thread. They may or may not score enough runs to win but I’ll keep hoping.
    To dream the Impossible dream
    To fight the unbeatable foe.
    This is my quest.

  6. trublu4ever says:

I know he’s gamer, but, I don’t think Kersh should be out there. …he is our franchise.

#Dodgers fans should give the NL champion #SFGiants their due.

    Another….WHEW!

  41. Now all we have to do is get through one more inning
    My fingers are crossed.

  42. vl4eccjr says:

A.J. looks relieved of that long funk.

  43. trublu4ever says:

A.J. out of slump….thanks ESPN for reminding us every freaking at bat!

  44. trublu4ever says:

    Come on Brandon…..shut them down!

  45. It’s up to League .

  46. trublu4ever says:

    1 down…2 to go!

  47. Nothing like a little pressure. Thank God for Agon!!!

  48. vl4eccjr says:

I sure hope Hanley is ok to come back next series. Dee is giving me the heebie jeebies!

  49. Oh that Dee Gordon/.. what can I say?
    Thanks Adrian

  50. Love Dee’s speed and never-say-die attitude. But his fielding leaves an awful lot to be desired.

  51. nellyjune says:

Glad to see the Dodgers win that one! My hubby and I went to see “Trouble with the Curve” today. It was a very good movie for both Clint Eastwood fans and baseball fans. It was a lot about the relationship between him and his daughter, but it had enough baseball in it to make it enjoyable for the baseball fan as well (especially the scouting side of it). And besides the movie itself, they had a trailer about a movie about Jackie Robinson coming out next April. It looks wonderful from what they showed in the trailer.

    • 32and53fan says:

Sounds like a good movie. Eastwood almost turned down the role. He did not want to be in a “baseball” movie. After he read the script, he realized it was not really a baseball movie at all. Just a relationship movie with a baseball background.

  52. I’m planning to see “Trouble with the curve” this week, it should be very interesting since it has something to do with baseball.
(Haha, I hope it doesn’t throw me a curve.

  53. trublu4ever says:

I see that the Cards get to play the Astros again….lucky them! It’s going to be tough for us to catch them…..but, I’m hoping the ‘Stros will put up a fight!

  54. crash24now says:

A few things to keep us optimistic: (a) Kershaw’s back, (b) Adrian’s power is back (??), and (c) Hanley is playing on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, we’re still 3 games back with only nine to play. Time is getting short…

    • Not to put a damper on anthing but I hope Adrian was just not doing his usual on Bailey. I believe he has 5 HRs in 15 ABs against him. I hope this was a good restart for him and he continue to hit them more often.

  55. DodgerZona says:

We sure need help Tru…..Hope the Nats win today and Hopefully the Stros can help us out…We need to take care of our biz

  56. trublu4ever says:

Nats winning 7-1 5th inning. Keep it up guys!

  57. DodgerZona says:

    Nats won…Good going

  58. It’s good to see the Brewers lost to the Nats today, I noticed it while checking the scores earlier tonight. I’m watching and hoping for a miracle in Astro/Cards game..

    • 32and53fan says:

The Dodgers just have to take it one game at a time and not worry about the Cards, Brewers, or anyone else. If they win the rest of their games and the Cardinals do likewise, we have nothing to do but congratulate the Redbirds and wait until next year.

      • I agree but I think it’s pretty tough not to pay attention to what your opponents are doing. I think it’s all one feeling what they’re doing and what the Dodgers are doing, especially when you’re trailing.

        • 32and53fan says:

Yeah, it’s tough not to pay attention to the others in the race, but they should be playing balls out for the rest of the season no matter what happens with the other teams. Once they clinch a spot or are eliminated, they can back off a little.

  59. It doesn’t look good down in Houston with the Cruds winning 4-1 in the top of the 6th. The Astros don’t look as bad as they are but I’m not expecting much from them. Just hoping for a miracle as I’ve been doing with the Dodgers.
I’m feeling negative as usual but taking one game at a time. It may be a slow death but what can we do?
    We’re Dodger fans.

  60. Well that’s it from Houston ,the Cruds move up a notch to 3 1/2

  61. trublu4ever says:

Hoping our boys make a good showing at Petco tonight. Every game matters now! Going for the win:

    M.Ellis, 2b
    Ethier, rf
    Kemp, cf
    Gonzalez, 1b
    Ramirez, ss
    Victorino, lf
    Cruz, 3b
    A.J. Ellis, c
    Beckett, p

  62. Hi Everybody
    Thanks for the lineup Tru.

  63. lbirken says:

I read the article on Lasorda’s Lair by the frustrated fan (what Dodger fan isn’t?) in which the author argued that Donnie should sit players who are struggling and pressing with those who are not. Yes, most of the Dodger regulars are struggling but the list of candidates to replace any of these players is woefully short of anything much better. She argues that maybe Dee should get more of a chance to play in the field and that Hererra or Rivera should get an opportunity. I could see her point if we were midway through the season but with a playoff spot on the line, I really don’t see much choice but to run out the so called regulars and hope for better results. We all know or believe these players can hit much better than they have. Sure, anything can happen but I would rather go down with Henley, Matt, Dre, the Ellis’ and Agon than taking my chances with Dee, Uribe, or whatever else is sitting on the bench.

    • 32and53fan says:

I’m not convinced that Gordon is ready for prime time. Other than speed, he is lacking major league tools. He should leave his cocky attitude at home and humbly submit to coaching on working the count to get more walks, bunting, slap hitting and throwing. I don’t even think he is the best baserunner, just the fastest. Until he masters all those things, he is not worth more than just a pinch runner.

  64. I agree, stick with your guns maybe sooner or later they’ll start hitting more consistantly.

  65. I’m watching Cruds/Astros on MLB.TV and the Reds/Brewers on MLB Extra Innings

  66. I lost the Crud game. Just as well, they’ll probably win anyway.

  67. Yeah I know, I’m watching the scores.

  68. I cannot believe that Eric Karros is saying that Dee should be the starting shortstop next season. I guess he’s not watching the same games we do . . . .

  69. Well that puts the Brewers away for the night.

  70. trublu4ever says:

    Man on!

  71. trublu4ever says:

    Wow….two web-gems!

  72. trublu4ever says:

Same crap every night…it;;s like we’re watching the same game over and over!

    • crash24now says:

      Groundhog Day.

Now we’re down a run. It’s going to suck big time if we lose this game and we’re down 4 1/2 games at the end of the night. We really, really, really need the offense to get started.

  73. crash24now says:

Two hits for Cruuuuuuuzzz and he’s still stuck down in the #7 hole with a .305 average.

  74. trublu4ever says:

    UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  75. Beckett doesn’t look good at all.

  76. trublu4ever says:

    Holy shit!

  77. trublu4ever says:

    Damn….we suck tonight!

  78. crash24now says:

Pathetic fucking futility!!!!!! How does one team have four base runners in one inning and score zero runs? Answer: we are Dodgers.

  79. nedisajerk says:

That the 2nd times Gonzo miss a slow grounded.

  80. crash24now says:

We have found this year’s Sweeney, and his name is Bobby Abreu.

  81. kahliforni says:

The more I watch this team flail and stumble the more I shake my head in disbelief that “leadership,” both upstairs and downstairs, will be returning in 2013. What exactly is going to change?

  82. nedisajerk says:

Oh Gonzo got that one.so easy.

  83. trublu4ever says:

See, Cruz gets a hit…..he should have been bating ahead of Shane!

  84. vl4eccjr says:

    WTG A.J.!!
    No shutout!

  85. nedisajerk says:

    Gordon time.

  86. trublu4ever says:

    Woo-hoo …. finally, a run!

  87. crash24now says:

    The offense lives……

  88. nedisajerk says:

Dang Cabrera stupid bunt single with 2 outs hurt.

  89. vl4eccjr says:

As Porky would say. . .
    ‘Th – a – th- a – th – that’s all folks!
We’ll get no help at all from the DisAstros. Season over!! 😦

  90. The only time Cruuuz failed to hit was when it would’ve counted.

  91. grizzy says:

    Well.
I still do not get how this lineup can fail night after night. Becket has been a good pickup, Gonzalez and Crawford should do something in the future. Move Rameriz back to third. To be truthful, I wrote them off after the last series with the Pads, but kept hoping and waiting. Turns out I’ll be waiting til next year.

  92. messagebear says:

    FINIS!

    It is the Guggenheim curse.

  93. crash24now says:

Donnie-boy just threw the white towel:

    Herrera lf
    Punto 2b
    Kemp cf
    Gonzalez 1b
    Ramirez ss
    Cruz 3b
    Rivera rf (WOW!!!!!!!&%#*)
    Treanor c
    Harang p

  94. messagebear says:

If I was Harang, I’d refuse to pitch with this lineup.
    “I want Uribe”, I’d say.

  95. Hi Everybody
Im holding out hope that the Dodgers make the .500 mark or better for the season. The 2nd Wild Card? Well I’ll keep wishing and waiting to see.

  96. crash24now says:

    Meanwhile, Jamie wants more money.

  97. How come I got a different lineup?
    That’s O.K. I wait for the game.

  98. trublu4ever says:

Wow ….. Mark Ellis is ill….so sick he needs an IV.

  99. Now that I won’t be the floating turd in everyone’s punchbowl of hope, let me say that this team just plain sucks and isn’t going to get any better next year as long as Donnie’s at the helm. Stupid is as stupid does, and lets just say I don’t forsee Donnie suddenly bursting out in a plethora of baseball brilliance next season.

  100. trublu4ever says:

Oh, my… a run….I suppose Donnie is a genius now!

  101. kahliforni says:

    From TJ Simers, LA Times:

“A pair of hamstring injuries took their toll, but nothing like Kemp’s attempt to run through a wall in Colorado…Kemp ran into the wall face and shoulder first, initially thinking he had broken his jaw only to awaken the next morning and find no feeling in his left shoulder.

‘I won’t make excuses and it’s weird to even answer these questions,’ he says. ‘But the fact is it’s a frayed labrum, what you would basically call a partially torn labrum.'”

As for all of us bloggers, we knew Kemp wasn’t right. Finally, we all know why.

  102. crash24now says:

Now that the pressure’s off, the $400 million offense finally performs. Too little, too late.

  103. Sorry my computer left me for a while but I didn’t miss anything on MLB Extra Innings. I have Vinny up now on MLB.TV.
    Everything else is O.K. too.

  104. nellyjune says:

At the beginning of the season, it was all about getting rid of Frank, and that happened. Thank God! Then, it was let’s build a team around Matt, Andre, Kershaw and possibly even Billz (at the time), and we will see what happens. However, they couldn’t just leave well enough alone (for this season). Seeing that the Dodgers had a shot at the playoffs (the way they were) wasn’t good enough. They just had to go out and buy some extras (some good, some not so good). The Dodgers (as an organization) should have just let the season play out with who we had, and then worry about the broken parts in the off season IMO. As much as I hate the Giants, they really did it the right way. When Milky was suspended, they didn’t panic, and as a team, they rallied around each other and made it happen. The Dodgers did a similar thing when Matt got injured with his hamstring. The Dodgers played pretty good ball for the most part. However, something changed within the team after all the trades. Like many of us have said before, we aren’t in the clubhouse hearing and watching what is going on, but it all comes down to chemistry, and the chemsitry seemed fine until the new crowd showed up. I was all for most of the players we got, but it just makes me wonder how it seemed to change. I hope the Dodgers finish off the Padres, and come home and give the fans a great sending off party into the hot stove season by sweeping a series, preferrably against the Giants.

  105. nedisajerk says:

Oh moly Rivera just hit a HR.

  106. crash24now says:

Kemp!!! Two more runs! Whoopee! Dodgers pounding the Padres!

Boy am I glad they waited until they were 4 1/2 games back with seven games left. This makes a playoff push all the more exciting.

What’s the emoticon for dripping with sarcasm?

  107. trublu4ever says:

It is nice to see a lot of Dodger fans at Petco….they are loyal and I’m proud of them!

  108. We have a Herrera, Rivera & a Cabrera tonight, any poems?

  109. Sure hope they ask Treanor back for next season. Don’t know how they’ll get along without a guy that can’t hit, can’t run and can’t throw.

  110. nellyjune says:

Way to go James!!! ….. Oh sorry, wrong team – lol!

  111. So who’s MVP of this wretched mess? I say Cruz.

  112. trublu4ever says:

    A win!

  113. The magic # is one for a .500 season.

  114. crash24now says:

    A loss for St Louis – we’re only 3 1/2 games back.

  115. kahliforni says:

MVP…Matt Kemp. Without his April alone, Dodgers would be under .500 and perhaps Mattingly out the door. On second thought…….

  116. Don’t forget we need a win today to go over .500 on the road, but I think it’s more imprtantant to look back at being .500 for the season as a positive note. Of course, although the road ahead looks bumpy with a lot of potholes, a miracle may be around the corner for a 2nd wild card berth. It’s looks improbable but remember it’s not impossible yet.

  117. crash24now says:

MVP – Clayton Kershaw. Yes, he only pitches every fifth game, but when he does, he dominates. He’s been healthy most of the year. His W-L doesn’t show it at 12-9, but his WHIP does at 1.039.

He has been the most consistently great player for the Dodgers throughout all of 2012. AJ Ellis had a good first half. Luis Cruz has had a great second half. Matt Kemp was great at times, awful at times, hurt too much of the time. Ethier has been good but not great.

  118. koufax1963 says:

I think the dodgers are an awesome team on paper for next year. I began the season thinking pitching would be our problem. I look around at other teams making the play-offs or close to it and I realize the pitching is very important (yea no brainer, you say) but the good pitching can come from the little known or past their prime pitchers, it does not have to be a Cy young candidate to deliver the goods, although many well known and well paid pitchers are on play-off teams. I say this with respect to Capuano, Harang, Lilly and Bilz, the dodgers Pitching staff did well this year, it certainly should be worthy of having a play-off berth. But the hitting never matched the potential after May, and I could add baserunning, along with some uninterpretive strategy from somewhere (donnie?, wallach?) that only left me muttering to myself “why did he do that” or “why didn’t he do this”. There will be some concerns during Spring training, Is Kershaw OK, Is Kemp OK. they certainly need to be healthy. We have lead-off spot to be addressed. what a year ago was solved with Dee Gordon, I now wonder who. I really like Mark Ellis, what a trooper he was this year, the surgery, his defense. Lastly, not really but, if I go on it gets too long, we use to have too many outfielders, now we have a infielder problem at 3rd and SS, niether hanley or Dee have impressed me defensively at SS, and I can’t fathom moving Cruz from the team, since hanley hits for average and has power, he seems like the keeper. It is always unknown how the season will play out, you can see from my prediction I didn’t think they would do that well this year. I am leaving this season with a big smirk and a wink to the gnat fans, knowing that ownership, mangement and the players know something special is happening with the Dodgers.

  119. lbirken says:

Wouldn’t you know when I questioned a blogger for the suggestion that Donnie replace some of the struggling regulars in the lineup with some of the bench players, he goes and does the very thing and the Dodgers end up winning. Seems like the same thing happened last season and even before when regulars got the day off with all sorts of complaints from these pages. Goes to show what the heck do any of us know.

Kemp has been hampered by injury and clearly he never really recovered from the hamstring issues. I have to agree with T.J. Simers assesment that Kemp still is the driving force behind this team. If he is loose and having fun, then the team will follow. Add Hanley to the mix and who wouldn’t want to be a part of the fun?

    • koufax1963 says:

Ibirken: I saw/read all that and smiled, doesn’t make up for all the “other stuff” Donnie did during the year, can we count them?
      1. playing Uribe after May, 2. pulling Kershaw on a start vs the gnats 3. putting TGJr on the shelf, nah I can’t count them all. although sometimes he appeared genius, it may of been luck. Send him to NL manager school this winter. afterall, this year, he did not make two trips to mound, so he can learn. Im just not certain the ownership will have the patience to endure medocrity next year.

  120. I just got back from the movies. “Trouble with the Curve” was a good love story, a wonderful interpretaton of a father and daughter relationship and a marvelous baseball story.

  121. crash24now says:

Is Mark Ellis still sick? Will Punto have another incredible offensive showing? Will Luis Cruuuuuzzz break out of his oh-fer four slump? Answers to these and many more questions in tonight’s ball game. Lineup:

    Punto 2b
    Ethier rf
    Kemp cf
    Gonzalez 1b
    Ramirez ss
    Victorino lf
    Cruz 3b
    AJ Ellis c
    Capuano 1.

  122. This should be very interesting with the Cruds not playing and the Brew Crew losing and falling back 4 1/2 games back. This would be a good night for the Dodgers to take advantage if hopefully they can win tonight.

  123. Cruz always seems to get his hits with nobody on lately.

  124. trublu4ever says:

    Once again, Cappy looking crappy.

  125. I feel like I willed that DP.
The Padres reminded me of the Dodgers in this 2nd inning.

  126. Cappy was lucky there – WTG Punto!

  127. Punto’s really looking good tonight.

  128. We’re getting a look at his value the past few games. I’m starting to like him.

  129. trublu4ever says:

    A run for us!

  130. We’ll take it. 2-0 Bums

  131. vl4eccjr says:

    CRUUUUUUZ!!!!

  132. trublu4ever says:

    Crrruuuzzzz!

  133. CRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUZ

  134. nedisajerk says:

Mommy there goes that man Cruz again.

  135. I think this is the team we see on paper being translated onto the playing field. And it is so SWEET to see 🙂

  136. This Paco story really amazes me.

  137. nedisajerk says:

Of course that infield single hurt again by Cabrera

  138. Tough inning but they got only a run. Good to get through it.

  139. trublu4ever says:

    yes….more runs!

  140. Well we got that run back.

  141. nedisajerk says:

How was those strikes to Hanley? Of course he chase a ball in the dirt.

  142. trublu4ever says:

    Crap!

  143. nedisajerk says:

Stop squeezing Belisario that 2-2 pitch was strike 3.

  144. Get Beli out of there.

  145. This is getting scary.

  146. nedisajerk says:

It would be nice if we can get that run in from 3rd.

  147. I lost MLB.TV and can’t get it back, but I’m Watching the Pads feed on MLB.Extra Innings. Glad I have both it’s worth it.

Abreu career SB’s number 399. Why I was shock Donny didn’t PR for Abreu with Gordon.

  150. Ramirez is holding us back, tonight.

    Yes…finally…2 wins in a row!

  153. Still tough to do, 3 out 6 left Magic # 4.
    But we’ll keep hoping.

Still in it Mathematically. At least it’s a .500 season now at least.
They may get help from the Nats against the Cards, but I see no help from the DisAtros against the Brewers. They need to win all these last games to do it. I’m not from Missouri, but they still need to show me.

It surely didn’t help that we didn’t beat those Brewers in our h2h matchup.

    • Yes it’s a .500 season or more and it’s good to end the road record also over .500 for the season. We just need one more win at home for .500.
It’ll be something positive to look back upon if we don’t make it to the post season.

We have a couple of things going for us.

      1) Clayton Kershaw will start two of our last six games.

      2) The Nats and the Reds are only one game apart, so they both still have an interest in beating the Cards, to get the home field advantage.

The real questions: (a) will our offense keep performing as it has in the last two games, and (b) will the Cards lose at least three of their next six games?
