Dodgers’ Path to the Postseason: Sept. 21, 2012

‘Outwardly, it looks like the Dodgers’ first playoff appearance since 2009 is slipping away. In the heat of another hard loss to swallow, manager Don Mattingly didn’t argue that notion, either.’

“Honestly, it does. It feels like it is a little bit,” Mattingly said. “I just don’t think there’s anyway for us to look at it other than that. We’re going in the wrong direction.”

Good call, Tru. You know, I think he had the same attitude when he played for the Yankees. 1982 to 1995. Their post-season experience during Mattingly’s playing time? One, count them, one playoff in fourteen years, and they lost in the division series – in 1995.

Mattingly – 1982 to 1994: “Uh, well, honestly, it looks like we’re not going to make it again. We’re going in the wrong direction.”

Mattingly – 1995: “Uh, well, honestly, I’m surprised we made it this far. Time for me to hang up the cleats”

Mattingly – 2012: “Uh, we’re going in the wrong direction. I don’t know why these guys don’t follow me. I guess I’m not much of a leader.”

Donnie has no clue on how to get to the playoffs. As a player, he got there only once – in his final year – and then lost in the first round.

    “Wake up, Magic,
I think I got something to say to you.
    It’s late September
And our Donnie really has been schooled.
    I know he’s really confused
But as fans we feel abused
Oh Magic, I wish he’d never seen this place.”

As a partner with others for season tickets, we had to send in our playoff money the first week in September. What usually happens is the Dodgers keep the ticket money for unplayed games as a credit against next year’s tickets. I have a bunch of “phantom” tickets sitting in a drawer for playoff and World Series games that were never played so this is nothing new. In spite of what Donnie thinks the Dodgers still have a chance to make the playoffs.

Remember when some of us gave our guess as to how many wins the Dodgers would have this season and where they might finish? As memory serves me the Dodger record is about what many of us thought it would be. What we didn’t expect is how well the Dodgers played the first part of the season. Clearly the Dodgers played well over their heads, especially with the minor league lineup they were forced to use due to injuries. None of us expected the Dodgers to make such dramatic player moves when they happened and no one could have expected the Dodgers to have so much trouble scoring runs with the new revamped lineup.

And yet, we are all highly disappointed at the horrible slide the Dodgers have taken in the standings while watching the Giants continue to win without some of their key players. I believe this disappointment is justified even if most of us really did not expect the Dodgers to win anything when the season started. I think most of us realized the Dodgers would not maintain the winning pace they enjoyed the first month or so but if the team that came out of spring training could be competitive and win a bunch of games even with injuries to Kemp and others, why can’t this so called new and improved version? Hard to understand and even harder to watch.

How much confidence do we have even if the Dodgers somehow make it to the wild card playoff game?

    Cubs beat the Cards!
    Cubs beat the Cards!
    Cubs beat the Cards!

5-4 in 11 innings. Now it’s time for the Dodgers offense to do their part. It’s still possible, folks.

  7. To dream the impossible dream
    To fight the unbeatable foe
    to bear with unbearable sorrow
to run where the brave dare not go.
Come on guys bring it home tonight.

  8. trublu4ever says:

    Whee….a run!

  9. That’s the way to do it.

  10. crash24now says:

Rivera with the RBI! Wow! And the Brewers losing to the Nats 2-1!

  11. crash24now says:

Nice game, so far, Joe! Keep it up!

  12. Ouch – Rivera really stung is there!

  13. Sorry, should be “us” not “is” – duh!

  14. Blanton gave us a good 5.2 innings but the offense is stll stagnant.

  15. trublu4ever says:

Damn….Donnie is trying his best to screw us once again!

  16. Like to see a run or two here.

  17. A hit batter is as good as a hit.

  18. trublu4ever says:

First person to be fired in the off-season…….DAVE HANSON!

  19. vl4eccjr says:

The Dodger usually rough up Arroyo.
This is hard to take. . .

  20. trublu4ever says:

Joe West is stinking up the place!

  21. trublu4ever says:

  22. Thanks another hit batter.

  23. 32and53fan says:

    That was weak, Andre.

  24. trublu4ever says:

    Finally…2 runs…thank-you, Matty!

  25. 32and53fan says:

Finally, Kemp is acting like a clutch hitter.

  26. DodgerZona says:

    Thanks Kemp

  27. vl4eccjr says:

    Thanks Matt!

  28. NOW we have to hold this lead.

  29. trublu4ever says:

    Whew…I think I need a pacemaker!

  30. vl4eccjr says:

    A much needed win!
They need to get on a roll now, and close this season out strong!

  31. So I was sitting in my recliner, watching the end of the game and telling myself to not overreact to anything the Dodgers did. But it was impossible – THANKS FOR THE WIN, GUYS!

  32. nellyjune says:

Way to go Dodgers!! I really would like the Padres to win tonight. The gnats have had it way too easy this last week.

  33. All I kept saying in the top of the 10th was.
Don’t screw this up,Don’t screw this up.
When Dre struckout I thought we were done but thank god Kemp came through.

  34. crash24now says:

Incredible performance by Belisario to keep us in the game! Five strikeouts in two innings. Nasty stuff.

  35. nellyjune says:

While I am sitting here watching the gnats continue their batting practice against the Padres, I have come to the realization that at least the Dodgers, should they make the post season, are at least playing their competition. The gnats might be at a disadvantage playing these suckass teams right now because they aren’t being tested at all.

  36. grizzy says:

I see Kershaw is throwing without pain and may pitch tomorrow. Makes me uneasy, but again it’s hard to tell what’s really going on out here in the sticks in Utah.

    • It’s tough to know what’s going on anywhere with Kershaw right now, Grizzy. He hasn’t given permission to the team to publicly share his medical status, so we’re all in the dark and left to guess.

  37. trublu4ever says:

Same lineup for today. Just wondering if Shane is hurt, or, on Donnie’s poop list?!
Go Dodgers! Let;s get Fife some run support!!!!

  38. Hi Everybody.
We all know it would take close to a miracle for the Dodgers to get to that wild card game, so why not just sit back and enjoy.
    (if you can) lol

  39. The Brewers just lost and fell right into our laps.

  40. With the Cards winning it’s uphill for today.

  41. Speaking of up hill, it looks like our boys are sleepwalking today. They’re probably listening to these miserable excuses for announcers. Nevertheless, wake up – let’s get going!!

  42. trublu4ever says:

  43. trublu4ever says:

Poor Fife…once again, no run support.

  44. Even when we do something good, McCarver just HAS to say something disparaging! SH*T!!!!

  45. koufax1963 says:

This is just sickening to watch.

  46. See you tomorrow night folks.

  47. In my heart, I just can’t believe that the team is THIS BAD! Two clinchings in 3 games – aaaaarrrrrrrrrggggh!!!!

  48. nellyjune says:

Aaaarrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! …..and here come the bandwagon fans once again. This really sucks!!!

  49. nellyjune says:

Typical gnat fans already (immediate family excluded). All are on the social media saying “F the Dodgers!” Why can’t they just be happy their team won? Even in winning, we are still on their minds. I have a feeling this is going to be worse than 2010 only because they are claiming all the crap with Milky Cabrera is adversity. Give me a break!

    • trublu4ever says:

At least we are a class act…..it’s hard but, dammit, I’m not going to berate them….after they lose maybe 😉 You watch, when they come to L.A. for the final 3 games their fans will still be chanting beat L.A……what idiots!

  50. grizzy says:

Some of my family in Arizona is like that. When the D-backs are struggling, they might as well not exist. My mom is loyal, though, watches and critiques every game. Most of the giants fans around here are not too bad. There are a couple of mouthy ones I ignore. I did have to jump on one that claimed their announcers were better than Vinny. Some things you cannot let pass.

  51. grizzy says:

Can you believe this? 11 games out.
Both of my teams took it in the shorts yesterday. I only follow two: the Dodgers, of course, and Oklahoma’s Sooners. The Okie’s had some suspected weaknesses that showed up last night, but I’m still wearing the colors. No fair weather crap here.

  52. trublu4ever says:

  53. kahliforni says:

Tired of banging my head against the wall. I’m sure Donnie Baseball is a swell guy and a “players’ manager.” But t’s becoming more and more obvious that he might not be the best fit for this team. Why will his message/style/strategy/philosophy/ be any different next March? This team, for whatever reason, is not responding to his managerial leadership. As Dodger manager………..he was a great first baseman.

  54. nedisajerk says:

Is Steve Dilbeck a closer Giants fan? You not fooling no one with that other link.

#Dodgers fans should give the NL champion #SFGiants their due.

    New post.
