Ned goes dumpster diving one more time during dog days of August. This time he has picked up Justin Germano from the Texas Rangers and deposited him in Albuquerque. Germano is a 32 year old right-handed starting pitcher who has spent lots of time going back and forth between AAA and the MLB. That experience will come in handy within the Dodger organization.
Why did Ned feel compelled to do this type of manuever? He loves diving into dumpsters? Well, yes, but besides that we have a lack of depth of starting pitchers. Stephen Fife is having Tommy John surgery. Zach Lee has regressed on his K/BB ratio. Matt Magill is, well, Matt Magill.

This is just not any good at all. He’s got to get well and get well soon. Kershaw is amazing and definitely the #1 pitcher in the MLB right now. But Kershaw needs his #2 & #3 to be healthy. That’s Greinke (tonight) and Ryu. Kersh can’t do it all by himself.
It should be obvious that there is not much at the AAA level in the way of pitching. Not sure there ever will be with the way the PCL gets bashed for how difficult it is to measure the pitchers or hitters because of how the ball seems to fly off the bat in some of the parks due to altitude or some other crazy factor.
Well, it looks like we lost Ryu for at least 15 days. Two starts. I hope he recovers nicely. I hope Greinke can get back to the win column, tonight..

The bullpen happened… AGAIN!!!
Ryu to the DL and Greinke is running on fumes…. The bullpen sucks… This team will not make it to the WS as currently constructed… Greinke needs to skip a start and rest. Ryu should be back in two weeks.. I think we can weather that. I don’t believe we can survive with our bullpen.. We will probably make the playoffs, but, in a playoff situation against the best teams; we have all seen how important a shutdown bullpen is… And my friends, our bullpen is not shutdown. They suck like a Dyson…..

It was obvious the dodgers need bull pen support back in July, could go farther back, but then the Beckett injury and Haren back slide caused Ned to get Starters, and our BP has not been supported, cant get pass any play off team without a solid BP, I have seen the Tiredness of our SP, even Kershaw is not as dominate as of late. Ned perhaps Papelbon he is right up north playing gnats, of course perhaps Papelbon should stay there for this weekend, phillies need to win some more, thank goodness they pulled out last night. Im just frustrated with the ryu and uribe news, and yes with donnie, that he took so long to remove wright after the second hit off of him.
I think Wright has done a good job for the most part,but a couple of others that can’t be relied on cause the over use of key pitchers. Looks as though all of them could use a day off.
I didn’t like the way Greinke was pitching, I thought any minute something was going to go wrong, but to my surprise he lasted 5 innings without allowing a run. Beaz really looked exceptionately good to me. I guess Wright was due for a bad outing since he has been great lately.
We lucked out when the Phillies came from behind to beat the Giants, thereby maintaining our 5 1/2 game lead.
It’s good to have Kershaw pitching tonight.
I think there still time to straighten out our bullpen. I hope.
The only relievers we can count on are named Jansen and Howell. Wright is capable for long relief. He had a bad night last night. Wilson and League seem to be 50-50 relievers. Half the time they’re good and half the time they’re bad. I know that’s an exaggeration, but that’s the way it seems.

Gallardo pitched a fantastic game, we must credit him for that.
With this team’s inability to score runs consistently, plus their dismal record of rallying after the 7th inning (zero come-back wins), I’m a bit shocked they would call up light-hitting Triunfel instead of Guerrero, who is over 100 points higher in both BA and OBP than Triunfel. If it boils down to arbitration years and keeping a player under control, then I say it’s all about business and it’s no wonder TV is not a reality for 70% of the fans.
Kahli, for those of us who have been fans for a long time (pre-Curt Flood lawsuit), it’s tough to remember that this IS basically a business and not the game we grew up with. And that makes me feel sad. It’s not about the love of the game any more, it’s about the love of the money the game generates.
There’s plenty of truth in what kahli and sparkle posted. I had a conversation with a giants fan who felt you are just cheering for laundry. The players come and go so quickly. Reports are mlb is generating money at a tremendous rate and looking for ways to make more. In other words more ways to stick it to us, if you want to take the pessimistic view. I usually will not think along those lines but it really is not about the game so much these days.
I did watch the game last night and, I feel sorry for Kersh….we suck with timely hitting. Actually, right now, we just stink all over the place. I agree Triunfel?! WTF

The big bats of the Brewers came through against a very good pitcher in Kershaw. Kershaw was around 70 pitches after 7 innings [Which is where I fell asleep due to my long trip home.] The Dodgers need to start doing the same. They need big bats that can strike quick against good pitching. If you rely on the back end of the line-up, to drive in the front end of the line-up, against good pitching…You will more often than not, end up with unsatisfactory results. Why did we miss Hanley so much in the post season last year…because he was our big bat, a game changer. Where are the big bats this year…

I have read that Guerrero isn’t ready defensively…His contract states that he can only be sent to the minors this season…after that, he will have to learn by trial and error in the show.
I also read something about keeping guys in the minors at this time of the year due to making trades…I’m not sure how that one works…or, if Guerrero even is trade bait…
But, I agree his bat would probably slot into the line-up nicely.

Guerrero has played 545.4 innings in the minors so far this season [Dee has almost that many at bats]. 362.2 of them at 2nd base. Which is where he has committed all 5 of his errors. His other positions played…3B-33…LF-53 and SS-44.2 innings…The latter being his natural spot, and if I’m correct, is where he was playing when Olivo became so enraged with his lack of performance, he chewed his ear off…

So the way I always look at it is, any major league team can beat another major league team at any given time.
SO, as I hope the Dodgers will take advantage of these teams I always prepare myself for the worse.
This is one experience I picked up though the years. Don’t get your hopes up too high so the hurt isn’t too much after a loss.
That said I still think the Dodgers will get back to the postseason.
The thing that stands out most to me are the days off. With this current collection of PVL bodies breaking down, they have five additional off-days after today’s off day. I have to hope that, going forward next year, the Dodgers will begin to infuse the line-up with young muscles, tendons and ligaments–as well as talent! Guerrero, Pederson, Seager…these guys will bring enthusiasm and durability, two things this team sorely lacks.

I keep seeing these hints about Greinke’s elbow but nothing definitive. Maybe that means all anybody knows is it’s sore.
I won’t be surprised if Greinke is done for this season and next year…. I think he is about to buy a TJ surgery…. I hope I am wrong……
Dilbeck’s article in the Times today pretty much sums it up.
No team goes through a season without injuries and it was clear from the start of this season the Dodgers had little margin for injury with the lack of depth. The surprising thing is the lack of consistency from the bullpen but the maddening thing is the ongoing difficulties this team has to score runs, especially when behind late in a close game. It just seems the opposition has better at bats.
I do not think the Dodger’s problems stem from lack of desire. If it were that easy to get a base hit at just the right time it would happen more often. I do wonder if lack of energy has anything to do with it but all teams have the same challenges. Championships are won by overcoming adversity. Not sure this team has that quality.
The good news the schedule favors the Dodgers and they are still in first place. The challenge will be to get the injured players back and avoid further injuries. I just hope the team has not run out of gas.

We will only go as far as our pitching allows us…and as it sits now, we have a couple that we know of, flirting with injuries.

I believe they will overcome these injuries.

We have several position players, at key spots dealing with injuries… One in Hanley, who really hasn’t dominated at the plate all season. And another in Uribe, whose glove is as big a factor as his bat. Uribe has shown a penchant for swinging hard and doing damage…and has done so in big games.

I believe, he will do so again.

The bull-pen… Which in my mind is the most underachieving group of relievers in recent memory, has the talent to persevere… especially in a short time span. Wilson and League are my main thoughts here…I believe they will improve as the intensity levels grow.

The resurgence of Kemp… He wasn’t a factor last season, and has struggled at times this season…Although, when he comes to the field focused and on a mission…He can dominate a game as well as anyone…

I believe Kemp, will go on a rampage at the plate… and provide the squad with a steady, yet dominating bat.

Puig has been steady pretty much all season…yet, hasn’t really shown the spark that ignites the masses. As good as he has been…I believe he will improve upon his ability to become a game changer.

Bench depth… Turner has been more than adequate in this role, particularly with his bat. The team has several, very good players when defense comes into the equation…although, if they are thrust into everyday roles…It’s gonna be a crap-shoot on offense.

I believe in miracles…so, if this becomes the case…put a saw buck on box-cars for me… I think someone will step-up, when needed.

The bright side in all of this…at least to me…is with 36 games left, the team has time to get healthy…This team currently sits at 70-56, recording the third best record in the N.L., up to this point, and have yet to reach the pinnacle of their potential…
With the absence of Either in the everyday line-up…I believe he will be healthier than in years past… He will work through the rust of inactivity and provide the team with the type of baseball, that in the past has given him the moniker of Mr. Clutch.

I agree we have an “easy” schedule remaining. If we take the same chutzpa/ mojo/ fortitude forward as we did vs the gnats last series we are good. But after the brewers series, I have concerns. and these sub 500 teams have only next years positions to concern them, so they play with abandon, especially the AAA call ups.
If the dodgers dont win the division they are sunk, a WC play-off would be deflating. A consistent BP is what is needed and a MGR to use it correctly. Wilson, League. Howell and Wright need to do the 123 innings, I have seem them do it, but I only remember the dismal BS they have thrown. Doesnt seem like Kershaw, Geinke and Ryu can dominat and go deep (kershaw exception about the deep), tired OK, thats why the BP must compensate. I trust our batting improves with return of Hanram and Uribe, and perhaps September’s call ups will put the core 25 on notice, and they will get going consistently.
and really the most surprising thing on the dodgers this year is Dee Gordon. Go Dodgers!
We will make the post season.
We will not win it all. We’re going to get beat by the Brewers. If we somehow make it to the World Series, we’ll get beat by the Angels or A’s or Tigers.
Why? Because, yes, the team has run out of gas. These old-stars (not all-stars) from 2009 simply cannot make it through a full 162 game season plus playoffs. It didn’t help any by extending the season early with the ridiculous road trip across the world to Australia.
The extra-long season has taken its toll on our senior citizens – Hanley, Crawford, Beckett, Uribe, and AJ Ellis have all had to miss significant time due to injuries. Even some of the younger guys – Kershaw, Ryu, and Greinke – have had issues with the Australia plus 160 game season.
In my opinion, whether or not this team goes far in the post season (yes, I believe they will be there) depends on the good health and stellar performances of two people: Hyun-Jin Ryu and Brian Wilson. If these two flounder, forget it. That said, even if they are lights-out, we still have to deal with woeful catching and equally woeful managing.
Well that’s it for the off day. I hope everyone found pleasant things to pass the time while we wait for the games to begin again.
The starting pitching is beginning to bother me. I know the bullpen isn’t what it use to be but I hate to see the starters starting to have a difficult time winning games too.

A couple of weeks (let’s say on August 8th), the Dodgers world looked a lot rosier. Dan Haren had just pitched a gem and looked as if he had fixed whatever mechanics were messed up. Clayton Kershaw got everybody out who came to the plate. Ryu and Greinke were healthy. Fausto pitched well in his Dodger debut.
Then the starting rotation turned upside-down. Haren’s mechanics are not fixed and he is, at best, a #5 starter. Ryu pulled a butt muscle. Somebody revealed that Greinke has an elbow issue. Yes, Kershaw is still Kershaw, but we can’t win in postseason with one fantastic starting pitcher and three not-to-good starting pitchers.
So, I agree with Kahli – Ryu needs to come back strong. Also, we need to either rest Greinke or hope he is already on the way back to Greinke-ness.
San Diego currently sits 7 games back in the wildcard chase… The Mets are 7 1/2 games back. Losing record, or not, there is no time like the present for these two squads… My ice bucket challenge, asserted towards our beloved Dodgers, is to put the chill, in the will, of this weeks opponents.
