Gnats off today. A Dodger loss brings No. Cal. to within one game in the loss column. I’ve been a Dodger fan since ’69, and I just don’t “feel it” this season.
It’s the eighth anniversary of the 4+1 game. Maybe that will help us cut the magic number to eight tonight.
These games are like going to Las Vegas or Atlantic City. Around and around she goes and where she stops nobody knows. If you really know how this game will turn out tonight, or this series, or the next series for that matter, well you’re a better man than I am.
I still say this is all on the players. At the moment I don’t care about ownership.

Not good when the #2 guy struggles. The thing about the Dodgers this season that bothers me most is the inability to build or sustain momentum. The 6 game lead of a few weeks ago went to two, back to 4 but now in danger of dropping again. The big series against the Giants was followed by a horrible series against Colorado. Where would this team be without Kershaw?
Birk, I really think this is all on Donnie. I really feel a team plays to the personality of its manager, and Donnie has the personality of a turnip. His constant jumbling of the line-up. His first half of the season playing people out of position. His constant insistence on a RH line-up against LH pitchers even though it hasn’t worked all year. His hair brain use of the bullpen. Ill advised bunts. His total lack of understanding of in game strategies and anticipating his and his opponents next move. I honestly feel any other manager would have at least an 8 game lead with this team, maybe more. And I do mean ANY other manager.

I don’t know if you are right or wrong but I understand how the manager is in the spotlight and why you think think this way. I just look at all the strike outs, the lack of so called clutch hitting and all the runners left on base and wonder why. Is this on the manager too? I suppose it is if the team fails to win.
All team’s players are going to fail at least a league average amount of the time. Its inevitable. But Donnie’s teams execute so poorly, they appear to make failure a religion. I doubt 2/3 of the team can perform basic baseball fundamentals, and that’s on Donnie and his coaching staff. I’d bet that only 2-3 players know what their rolls on the team are. Can’t build any kind of continuity either with a line-up that changes everyday injury or no. What manager in his right mind takes out his hottest hitter (Crawford) down the stretch in favor or a line-up that hasn’t done squat all year? Hell, even Vinny questions his in game decisions. And his ill use of the bully is well documented.
When this team gets to the playoffs, and it will, just watch how outmanaged he gets by the opponents manager. Donnie’s solely dependent on Kershaw, Greinke and Ryu to get him through the playoffs and if one falters, he’ll go down like a house of cards.

If you ask me, I’d say the Dodgers were really pressing in that inning. I think they gave it away. I think they were trying too hard.

On any given day, any team can beat any other team. I hope the next four games are not given to the Cubs.
So far, it’s not looking too good.
Greinke isn’t fooling anybody.
And to add.to.what bothers is now often it seems the Dodgers score runs on plays that result in an out rather than a hit.
And the difficulty to overcome deficits. There, I am done complaining. I just expected more from this team.
Now, they have a righty in there…how long before we see CC? Or, Dre? or Joc?
The team seems disconnected. It’s been implied all year. Now it’s bubbling to the surface…little dugout spats…newspaper columns. It’s true, it’s on the players. But sports is an emotional game. Without the fire of comradery it’s hard to get up for a game.
Makes me wonder again about the Donnie contract debacle after the season ended last year. Not so much that he was resigned but how it happened. I can’t help but think some in positions of power were not sure what to do.
The Guggs have been reluctant to make changes. Very gentlemanly. But if the Dodgers don’t get to the World Series changes could be afoot.

I’ve always been a fan of pitchers…from before I can even remember…back when I was about 3 [I’m guessing], my father taught me the everyday line-up…He would usually ask me to announce the days players…I’d get 8 out of 9 correct…My pitcher was always Drysdale…He’d try to correct me…but, I never caught on. After that, as I grew older, it was Sutton…but the two that stick out in my mind are Valenzuela and Hershiser…The thrill and suspense of him chasing, then surpassing, Drysdale’s record…will always be one of the most cherished moments in my memory bank. Kershaw is certainly going to be another. [Koufax retired when I was just an infant.]
The long wait may be affecting Kershaw.

Kershaw has 64 pitches through 3 innings of work. Clearly, this isn’t his best day. But he does seem to have settled down a bit. If he can pitch through the seventh inning, that’s probably the best we can hope for.
Amazingly, no fault of his own, the sun (Kemp) and misjudgement by Crawford, Kershaw got out of that inning without a run scoring.

Kershaw continues to labor with about 20 pitches per inning. Donnie needs to take him out soon to save his strength for the Giants game on Wednesday.

Got to watch today on WGN and realized Kershaw is human? Sort of felt bad for Edwin Jackson. He was one of ours once.
You shouldn’t be and he’s beat us back in LA and the Giants pounded him his next start causing him to go on the DL.

Part of me can’t believe this crap and another part is not surprised. Just when you think they are starting to get a handle on the race, someone tries to give it back.
I just hope the team doesn’t take this loss to heart. It’s tough to lose after taking a 5 run lead but they just have to turn the page, as they say. Tomorrow’s another day and we’re still in first place.

Three things are highly evident when it comes to Donnieboy. 1. He still doesn’t believe relievers can throw more than one inning. Ever. 2. He’ll let a struggling pitcher hang out there way too long hoping they’ll “find it.” 3. He still hasn’t learned Wilson is not a set-up man nor even a good pitcher.

I liked the early game before the gnats play, a win puts extra pressure on them, not today. You know, this BP has vetran guys that have delivered, but all year they just havent had it, at the trade deadline the focus shifted to Beckett and haren and what should we do, hernandez and correia were the call, and the freaking, stinking BP remained, and JP Howell has become worse.

Not much more to say about today’s game. Hard to accept another come from ahead loss but what else can we do but look forward to tomorrow. I can only imagine how Donnie feels after a game like this.
After a series of poor managing decisions, if last October is any indication, I imagine Donnie’s probably feeling he should get another contract extension.
Hate the Beard…but the three-run homer, with two outs, served up by JP was the killer. Suddenly, Dodger pitching is a real Achilles heel. How in hell will they navigate the playoffs when they can depend on NO ONE in the pen, except Jansen?
Signing Wilson seemed like such a good idea after last season and my guess is he had other offers. But clearly things have not worked out as anyone thought.
lbirk, the funny thing is, I still love the Beard. When push comes to shove in the playoffs, I still think he’s got the best mental approach of anyone in the pen, including Jansen. If he could just somehow summon his stuff/mechanics. His pitches just seemed so blah today. He was lights out having to pitch only one month last season. It looks like a big toll has been taken on him pitching the full six-month season.
I’d rather have him than League or Perez!

I see the Pads helped us out last night. Still disgusted with yesterday’s game and that debacle with the Nats. We should have a lead now the giants would not be able to overcome in the series with them. I think we’ll win the division in spite of the bullpen, but it’s going to take some super human efforts from Kershaw and Greinke to advance. Haren is going to give it his best, that we know, but it’s doubtful he’ll be able to go deep enough in his start to keep the pen on the bench.
I missed the game yesterday…it was blacked-out in my area. I will also miss the game today, or part of it, as I have an early dinner date with my youngest daughter…

I just don’t get Mattingly. Perez throws a good inning. You didn’t have to bat for him. So why not let him try going another inning and maybe save some wear and tear on an already taxed bullpen that’s going to have to fly cross country and get used extensively again tomorrow?

That’s the trouble birk. He can’t recognize when a pitcher it throwing good vs. when he struggling. Its no wonder he kills a bullpen.

I can’t believe I miss 5 no I didn’t that game on Saturday was just terrible.
It’s hard to believe I remember guys like Billy Cox. He was sort of like Mark Ellis, didn’t hit much for average but was good in the clutch. He never made it to the ’55 team but I’ll always remember him in the infield with Reese, Robinson and Hodges. Snider and Furillo were the best in the outfield of that time. Pafko for a few years was in left.
Glad to see the Padres can be tough on somebody besides the Dodgers. Now there is no way for the giants to get out of Los Angeles in first place, they will have to sweep and get help from the rocks. As shaky as things get at times, I don’t think that will happen.
Woo-Hoo, ugly win…. I’ll take it…… Get’em any way you can… C’mon Ryu, get healthy….. We are going to need you to win a WS…….
