Dodgers Bullpen Worst in the NL
As measured by “Wins Above Average” on Baseball Reference, the Dodgers Bullpen is the worst in the National League this year. St. Louis is tops with 5.2 WAA, Pittsburgh is 2nd with 2.6, Atlanta is 14th with a negative -2.4, and Los Angeles is 15th with a negative -2.5 WAA. Contributing heavily to that -2.5 is Jim Johnson with -1.1, Chris Hatcher with -0.7, Chin-Hui Tsao with -0.6, and Joel Peralta with-0.4. Offsetting those negative individual numbers are JP Howell with 0.8, Kenley Jansen at 0.5, and Juan Nicasio at 0.4.

of course the Dodgers BP is the worse, the unfortunate thing is, this is the retooled BP, and I dont see any improvement, its just inconsistent, hatcher had a great game last time, but put him in today and who knows what will happen, and this BP gets really ugly sometimes, hit after hit, a musical group would love to as many hits this BP has produced.

This team should be playing its best ball this time of year. I’ve never seen such a lackluster bunch in my life. Somebody needs to get in their face, throw a few chairs, something. They play the game as banal as Mattingly manages. Might as well kiss Greinke goodbye. I wouldn’t play for this team if I didn’t have to no matter how much money they threw at me.
I live fairly close to Houston, maybe I should start following them. At least they give a shit and bust their ass to win. Other than Kersh and Greinke, no one on this team busts their ass for anything.
Astros’ telecasters Bill Brown & Alan Ashby are saying that Fiers has something special going but won’t say what it is.
So our scoring machine is making yet another pitcher look like Cy Young.

Why is it too whenever the Giants pick up someone like Scutaro, he’s all world and leads them to victory down the stretch. We’ll get Utley, whom I doubt even will hit .200. Victorino, who was a great pick-up for a team or two, comes to L.A. and totally sucks. It can’t be coincidence year after year that most everyone that comes to L.A. immediately forgets how to play ball. Its got to be the lackluster environment and attitude put forth by the coaching staff. There isn’t one everyday player that comes to work with his lunch pail and hardhat. We get bubbles and bananas and selfies, that latter of which pisses me off to no end. They don’t play the game the right way, its mostly nonsense and without sound fundamentals.
Is anyone shocked they didn’t score tonight because no one hit a home run? Its gotten to the point they can’t even get a hit. Fire roid boy right now. Whatever he’s spewing isn’t getting them anywhere. Do they know how to move a runner? Do they know how to hit behind one? Do they know how to protect a runner trying to steal? Do they even know how to put the ball in play? All they know is swing for the fence and go sit down. They could have 6 Kershaws and 6 Greinkes on the staff and it wouldn’t do them any good because this team doesn’t know how to hit and play the game the way you’re supposed to.
Sad to say, but this team is far more broken than any Ned team ever was and unless they get some leadership who isn’t going to put up with all the pansy ass bullshit and piss poor fundamentals, they’ll be like this until they ride Faz and Andrew out of town too.
Gotta spread some of the blame to the writers and fans too. If this crap was going on in NY or Boston, the media and fans would let them know it. All you hear from L.A. is how great Donnie is and how smart the front office is, and the writers and fans eat it up. I’ll tell you, even in the 70s and 80s when Tommy’s teams played crappy you’d hear it from the people at the park, me included. I had no problem booing mediocrity. If this is what $300M buys, then bring back McCourt. At least he had some pretty nice Malibu property to show for his efforts.
You are so right on everything here. I, too, would let all the coaches and of course, the manager go as a first step. I get all kinds of grief when I boo (or actually complain) about how things are going, on Facebook….and, what do I get, I’m not a loyal fan or the crap of win or lose they are Dodger fans…..well, I keep saying losing sucks and because i can’t stand mediocrity, i am a true fan!
…as for firing Mattingly, Facebook is now running 80/20 to do it…where a few months ago, it was the other way around.
A loss is a loss no matter how many hits you get.
No offense OBF because your the most optimistic person on here, but that’s exactly the attitude this organization has adopted and why it hasn’t won in 28 years. Somebody needs to not just get mad, but get pissed and start turning this loser organization around.
Friedman won in TB because his teams played collectively and fundamentally sound. They had to to compete with NY and BOS. Faz’s organization played successfully most years because they were fundamentally sound and were a bunch of no names trying to prove they belonged. All we have are a bunch over overpaid prima donnas playing some of the most unfundamentally sound baseball I’ve ever seen played. The blasé attitude displayed by the coaching staff permeates the team also. No one brings their lunch pail every day. Hell, no one even knows if they’re playing day to day.
This HAS to change. Today, right now is the “Network” moment when somebody has to say, I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore.”

On this blog, I’m looked at as being an optimist (at least by Beav). On the “Think Blue” blog I’m looked upon as the most pessimistic. I really look at things realistically, in my opinion. I just tell it like I see it. At the beginning of this season I felt the Dodgers made too many changes to a division winner. Right now I find it hard to predict if this team will get to the postseason and I dread to think how it would do once it got there. I give anyone credit if they can see what the outcome of this year will be.
oldbrooklyn, I think you’d be the last person on this blog anyone would want too offend. Anybody who would stay with the Dodgers as long as you have would have to a bit of optimism. I think we all respect your opinions.
there is some subterfuge going on now, about pine tar in the glove of Fiers last night, cant confirm or deny, only ask if that thought might of boinked Donnie or anybody in the dodgers dugout, to have the ump check the glove.
The frustration I hope is high in the Dodgers clubhouse, after Oakland and now NO-hit, wow Utley must be thinking what did I get in to?
I saw a picture of the substance. It was hidden in the glove. However, I’ve heard the MLB Network guys talk about this when Pineda of the Yankees got caught with the stuff all over him, and, they say a lot of pitchers use it and, apparently if it’s not blatant, they usually don’t do anything about it.

I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. I was taught to put just enough pressure on the ball, so that if I turned it towards the ground it would fall out. The fingertips get dry and slippery, it gives the pitchers better control.
It is no surprise that the weak, pathetic Dodger offense had zero hits last night. After all, in their previous game, they only had two. hits. I’m not trying to make light of Mike Fiers’ accomplishment. I am simply saying that the Dodgers offense is not good.
I don’t know how many of these crappy at bats we can blame on MacGuire. At the hitters meeting last night the players were told to lay off the fastballs up in the zone yet they couldn’t bring themselves to do that. That fellow, whoever he is, looked like he had several pitches working for him and more than a few crappy at bats as well. I realize you have to be on your game to pitch a no hitter, but why help him out.

Anything would be an improvement here, but we don’t have anything to improve it with.
31 different pitchers used, shuffling crappy pitchers up and down 1-2 games at a time. Great strategy that’s really paid off.
Starting 8:
Gonzalez, Peraza, Seager, Turner, Puig Pederson, Dre/Crawford, Grandal.
Two rookies. One late bloomer, one bone head, one strikeout artist, one Clydesdale, one/two has beens, and a good hitting catcher.
More station to station hitting. No team speed. No situational hitting. High K rates. And an offense centered again around the Clydesdale.
I’m for the rookies playing, but its time the FO blew up the team and completely started over. You can’t be successful overnight. They should know that already. You can’t have one philosophy and try and slur it in with another and have anything but the crap we’ve had this season. Admit you need to rebuild, trade off the old stars like Gonzales. Release Crawford and Dre if no one will take them, trade Puig and even Kersh if you have to and just be honest and tell people it’ll be 3 years before you start seeing a consistent winner. They don’t have to worry about money because its already going to be there, you don’t have to worry about attendance because when was the last time this club drew less than 3 million, and you don’t have to worry about TV because no one’s going to want to see them anyway.

No worries. The more the losses pile up, the more nails in the manager’s coffin. This team is going nowhere, even if they make the playoffs. Pitching is a mess. So, like the LA Kings last year, sometimes it’s best to miss achieving goals in the hopes of change. Hats off to the Astros, sweeping a three-game series in which Greinke and Kershaw both pitched, and pitched well.

Well, things turnaround during the long season for no apparent reason and teams get hot and head in the other direction. I’m off to the Netherlands for three weeks in the morning and maybe something good will happen during my absence. I’m not throwing in the towel, but I’m not betting the retirement fund on our guys being in first when I return.

Griz, have a safe trip. Having been overseas this season, it is a challenge to keep up with the team but I just could not resist doing so.
Some things change, some things stay the same. I really did not expect anyone to call for playing the rookies this season. Certainly a sad state of affairs for a team still fighting for a playoff spot.
I strongly believe a true fan can be highly critical of his/her favorite team without losing passion or interest for that team.
Which brings me to this. I am not angry about what is happening to the Dodgers but I am frustrated. I reject the notion that management should get rid of everyone and ask the fans to be patient as it rebuilds. At the present time, what convinces you that current management/ownership group can even accomplish that task?
I also reject the idea that replacing the hitting coach will solve the Dodger’s offensive problems. How many hitting coaches has this organization had over the past 20 plus years? The teams the Dodgers have had this season and last probably have some of the best hitters this organization have had in a long time. And yet they still struggle to score runs. They struggle against both good and not quite as good pitching. Is this from lack of preparation, motivation, or what? You can see the frustration when they fail. I cannot explain it.
Everyone wants the team to manufacture runs and steal bases. Clearly the roster does not support this type of baseball and whose fault or responsibility is that? Who is responsible for the awful bullpen?
But just as clearly something has to change and yet why should any of us expect that to happen this season? Why does this team go into offensive funks so often and why can’t it hit good pitching? I am also usually optimistic but when I see the team continue to lose close games started by Kershaw and Greinke, it is hard to remain optimistic. Of course, things can change and we hope they will and that is why I will be watching to see what happens next.
The Bucs have just put up a 3-0 wall on the Giants in the first inning, but you can’t tell the outcome these days.
With this Giant loss tonight, the Dodgers must feel like they are hanging at the edge of a mountain with nobody around to push them off.
As both the Dodgers and Giants continue to lose, the pennant race is clarifying. No wildcard teams will come out of the NL West. Therefore, for the Dodgers, the road to the playoffs goes through San Francisco. The results of those six games will be key.
Right now I have no confidence whatsoever that the Dodgers will win even one of those six games.
I have 100% more faith in the Giants turning things around than I do in this lifeless corpse of a team we have.
Kershaw finally said something, but I don’t really understand why somebody, anybody, does not snap their cork and throw an honest to god tantrum. What is with this bunch? They’re like the walking dead.

I guess the offensive part of my post was actually calling what we have “a team.”
In case anyone here hasn’t noticed, this is not a championship team.. Bullpen sucks, the starting rotation after Kersh and Greinke sucks, and the offense is even worse. These guys have no idea about situational hitting.. They just swing for the home run and strike out… I hope we don’t make the playoffs. They don’t deserve it… If we don’t make the play offs and go deep, at least Dildon and his coaching staff will be gone…. Either way, WE WIN!!!!!

I hope this doesn’t sound to optimistic but I find that somewhere along the way there is always a turning point. I think sooner or later this team will start winning again. That is if they don’t choke. It’s just a matter of when this turning point is reached that will determine it’s fortune.
I believe this roster is fine (maybe the bullpen is horrible, but the rest is as good as anyone else). But have you noticed that Rollins has been intimating for some time about small ball and moving runners over, etc.? Now that Utley is here, Rollins is even more adamant about it. These guys have been world champions. They know. They get it. I feel their frustration, but being first-year Dodgers, they can’t scream it…they haven’t been here long enough to demand it, but they probably have nightmares about the way this team goes about its business in-game, and they probably laugh about it when they’re done shaking their heads and crying. And Greinke and Kershaw, being as smart as they are, have noticed it, too. So allow me to translate: this manager, and by default, this organization, has its collective noggin up its collective posterior. I have serious doubts this team will finish ahead of the Gnats…and that means rounds of golf in October for the bunch of them.
