Who’s In?  Who’s Out?

Most of the Dodgers trading activity at or near the deadline involved pitching.  Trade away the youngsters who are still in development.  Receive some seasoned staff who have already proven themselves in the major leagues.  Pay millions and millions for bad contracts on worn-out players who will never play for the Dodgers.  Note that “#Years” is number of contract years the players will be under control.

No, the Dodgers did not get Cole Hamels AND David Price to lock down a Kershaw/Greinke/Hamels/Price rotation in the playoffs.  However, they did solidify their rotation by adding a solid #3 Alex Wood and a good #4 Mat Latos.  That will send “I can’t pitch into the sixth inning” Mike Bolsinger to AAA.  Also notice that Alex Wood is not a rental and will be a solid piece in the rotation up through 2019.

The bullpen is also improved with the addition of Jim Johnson and Luis Avilan.  I will miss Paco Rodriquez, however, he was out a lot of the past couple of years with injuries.  The addition of two starters also allows Carlos Frias to be used in the bullpen, where he is arguably more effective.

Meanwhile, we never got to see Hector Olivera perform as a Dodger.  Hopefully, Justin Turner will get healthy and stay healthy and the Dodgers won’t miss Hector.  Next year or later this year, Jose Peraza can be added to the infield and potentially be used as a true leadoff hitter.

  3. crash24now says:

Justin Turner is on the DL 😦

  4. crash24now says:

Bolsinger and Lee to AAA. No surprise there.

  5. Dodger4life says:

Bovada has the runs scored by the Dodgers over/under line tonight at 4. The Angels are at 3.

  6. The Beav says:

What’s the over/under on Mattingly being outmanaged by Scioscia?

    • Dodger4life says:

Unfortunately Donnie’s lineup card became public before they could set that line. Sorry, try again tomorrow!

  7. The Beav says:

I see in honor of Joc, Rollins led off with a K.

  8. crash24now says:

Kendrick with a nice home run.

  9. oldbrooklynfan says:

    Giants Lost.

  10. crash24now says:

Trout ties it with a triple.

SVS couldn’t get it done with the bases loaded.

  11. trublu4ever says:

Puig must have a hot date…..first pitch swinging every damn at bat!

  12. crash24now says:

Wow. Guerrero with his first home run in forever!

  13. crash24now says:

    Offense is kicking in tonight.

  14. Dodger4life says:

If you bet the Dodgers to win by 1 run right now, you will get a return of +479.

  15. trublu4ever says:

    Whew!

  16. oldbrooklynfan says:

    Another great Greinke victory.

  17. messagebear says:

Oh, and the great censors – just as I was posting my above reply to the Beav, the Beav’s post disappeared, and there was no reason for that removal that I could see.

  18. oldbrooklynfan says:

Another big game today. I hope Kirsh is ready to go.

  19. Dodger4life says:

Today’s over/under on runs scored is 6. With the Dodgers being 11/2 run favorites.

  20. Dodger4life says:

    Play ’em again…

    Kendrick 2B
    Gonzalez 1B
    Van Slyke LF

    Kershaw P

  21. crash24now says:

SVS with the sac fly to get us started. Then Yasmani G with the 2 run bomb!

  22. The Beav says:

Jansen’s been sick so let’s use him 2 days in a row when you didn’t need to either game.

  23. The Beav says:

Might behoove Donnie to leave the best pitcher in the game in there when he’s throwing a shutout and the opposition is doing nothing with him.

    • nedisajerk says:

Kershaw PC was 115 not the idea thing to do. You can’t blame Donny on taking Kershaw out with that PC after he was scratched twice.

      • The Beav says:

I’m old school Shad. My starter’s throwing a shutout, he gets to try and finish it unless he begs out.

That’s the trouble with starters today – they’re too babied.

  24. The Beav says:

Might also be a good lesson for Donnie to learn that unlike his teams, other teams don’t automatically roll over in the 9th.

  25. oldbrooklynfan says:

    ALL RIGHT

  26. trublu4ever says:

    Whew!!!!

  27. oldbrooklynfan says:

Back to Citi Field for me with my daughter tonight, to see the Mets and the Nats. I got out of bed two and a half ours earlier this morning only to find out later in the morning that the game which had 1:30PM start time was move to 8:05PM. Well, at least I’ll get to see the start of the Dodger game.

  28. Dodger4life says:

The over/under on how many nice things The Beav will have to say about Latos during today’s matchup with the Angels is at 3.

    • The Beav says:

Damn D4. With an over/under of three, it ought to be how many nice things I’ll have to say about anything.

      • Dodger4life says:

Such may be true. At least it landed on an even number though and you don’t have to pull a Donnie and play for the half run.

  29. Dodger4life says:

The over/under on runs scored today is 7 1/2, with the Dodgers being favored by 1 1/2.

  30. The Beav says:

Mat Latos, welcome to the most inept offense in the league. Be sure you pitch a shutout every time out.

Can they option Joc back out for a month? He useless.

  31. Dodger4life says:

I’m not feeling well today, folks. It’s time to close the old eyes and hone in on Vinny. Enjoy the game everyone. Let’s get the sweep!

  32. The Beav says:

When we throw a bullpen game its strictly duck ‘n cover. Why is it when another team throws a bullpen game at us, we still can’t score?

  33. The Beav says:

Nice to see a pitcher that can hit more than .000.

Does that count as 1 D4?

  34. trublu4ever says:

    Sweet #16!

  35. The Beav says:

    This oughta be interesting.

  36. The Beav says:

There’s a reason Howell isn’t a closer. Wouldn’t the normal play have been Howell or whomever in the 8th and Johnson in the 9th seeing as how he’s a closer?

  37. trublu4ever says:

    Well, thanks Baez! F You!

    • The Beav says:

Why Tru when your regular closer is unavailable do you not pitch the guy in the 9th who was a closer just before you picked him up? I know Johnson gave up the HR in the 8th, but it makes no sense to me whatsoever to throw two guys out there in the 9th who don’t know how to close.

  38. Dodger4life says:

7 1/2 runs seems to be spot on.

  39. Dodger4life says:

Bovada now has the Angels as the favorites to win the game.

  40. The Beav says:

Pederson really needs some time back in AAA.

  41. Dodger4life says:

    I couldn’t be happier

  42. zonadodger says:

BP please get better lol…Thank u Andre

  43. trublu4ever says:

My Boy saved Donnie’s butt today!

  44. zonadodger says:

    Very true (Tru)

  45. messagebear says:

    A great day for Tru.

  46. griz says:

Ethier was definitely the boy today!
    *
Somebody is going to have to figure out Pederson soon. We’ll need him to contribute if there is to be a successful run into the post season.

  47. griz says:

    Amen to that, ned.
    *
It’s August now and we’re heading for the home stretch, so if this team is to be successful, it’s time to start firing on all cylinders. Rollins is showing some life. We need to get those other two outfielders started again. Maybe start playing Crawford more as a wake up call. Who knows, Crawford could provide a spark ’til the next injury.

  48. The Beav says:

Been a long time since Andre did that. Last one was in 2010.

I’d still send Joc back to AAA to see if he can rediscover how to hit, then bring him back in Sept. They should be able to get by with a combination of Kike, Dre, Puig in center. Joc’s doing no one any good right now, especially himself.

    • JhallWally says:

I am tending to agree Beav!! Joc needs an extended time out… He is pressing to hard. Maybe a couple of weeks in AAA will clear his head… Major league pitching has adjusted to him and he has not made the necessary adjustments…….

  49. griz says:

Hard to argue with that, Beav. Three punch outs yesterday doesn’t bode well.

  50. oldbrooklynfan says:

I was at Citi Field waiting for the Mets and Nats to start when I glanced at the scoreboard and noticed that the Dodgers and Angels were tied 3-3 in the ninth inning. After the top of the tenth passed, I noted that the Dodgers had a man on in the bottom. Suddenly the lights on the scoreboard went out and low and behold, the the Dodgers won 5-3. I figured it was a homer that ended it. I was thinking it was AGon but was hoping it was Andre’. Later they show the walkoff on the jumbo screen. Nice going guys.

  51. crash24now says:

    The complacency of Mattingly:

“He made a great play in center field. He’s hitting eighth, he’s fine,” Mattingly said. “We know Joc can play, he’s going to be fine.”

Meanwhile, Pederson had a lousy 0.448 OPS in the month of July. Now he starts August with 0-4 with three strikeouts.

    • trublu4ever says:

I think he has to say that……heaven forbid he offends someone!

      • Dodger4life says:

There isn’t a player in the game who doesn’t go through a slump. Pederson is a guy who strikes out a lot when he’s dialed in, so in a slump it’s really magnified. He’s still an impressionable young rookie and I’m sure a lot of advice is being handed his way. Beav’s suggestion of sending him down being what he needs has some merit if you ask me. It would simplify the learning process by limiting the amount of instruction he received. On the other hand, he is a valued 2015 team member and a hell of a center fielder. If he was injured, I’d say send him to Arizona like they did with Kemp, but he’s not. Nope, I say we just have to ride it out with him…he’s bound to start making better contact with the ball sooner or later.

        • crash24now says:

Joc ought to be spending a lot of time with Adrian Gonzalez and Andre Ethier. He would do well to learn hitting from those two lefties. Mattingly’s hitting days are well behind him.

  52. The Beav says:

Here’s another reason to send Joc down. He’s already K’d 128 times this season, why hang the stigma on him of being the all-time club single season K leader? Send him out for August and maybe he doesn’t break Kemp’s record in September. Be different if he was hitting like Kemp did and K’d a lot, but he doesn’t. Let him try and get some mojo back for the final stretch. Other than D, which I think Kike can handle anyway, he’s beyond a black hole in the offense.

  53. Dodger4life says:

Last season in AAA he K’d every 2.9 at bats.
This season he has K’d every 2.7 at bats.

  54. Dodger4life says:

According to Donnie this is the adjustment Joc is attempting to make.
    .
Here is Derek Jeter demonstrating the inside-out swing popularized by Tony Gywnn and Wade Boggs to name just a few. It’s the most efficient way to hit a baseball as it allows a hitter to hit the ball to all fields with power. It also keeps the bat in the hitting zone longer than any other swing.
The focus of the inside-out swing is to keep your hands inside the path of the incoming baseball. Once you take your step to begin your swing and you have pulled your hands back into position to begin the swing (cocking your hands). You pull the bat through the hitting zone by using your bottom hand on the bat to pull the bat. With your front leg braced for support you pull the bat hard. (See Bob Horner’s Detailed Swing). If the bottom part of your body was correctly in place before the hand-pull, the body will react correctly transferring the majority of your bodyweight from the backside back to the middle of your body. If this doesn’t occur check the back foot. The toes should be pointing straight out, not to the right, or even slightly in towards the pitcher. This will allow your hips to open up when you pull the bat through the hitting zone. See Tony Gywnn Describing Bonds Swing
Once the bat is going through the hitting zone, the focus becomes the back hand and driving the back hand through the centre of the baseball. The swing should finish over your front shoulder and not around your back for a slight upward arc to the swing.

  55. messagebear says:

And if it isn’t just a slump? Letting Joc just flail away the rest of the season could be a career killer. Get him back to AAA to make the necessary adjustments.

  56. oldbrooklynfan says:

I agree that Joc should be sent back to AAA for more seasoning.

  57. Dodger4life says:

I still disagree. Joc is the team’s best defender. He has been a valued part of this squad from day one. Sending him down may do more damage than good. They should just be patient and give him time. What would be beneficial is if a few of his teammates could help a brother out by picking up some slack in the meantime.

  58. The Beav says:

If the boys can’t score a few runs against the trio Philly is throwing at them, they might as well go home.
