Who’s Hot Who’s Not – July

ice-heat

We can all sense who has been doing well lately and who has not been pulling their weight.  This post takes a look at exactly that, using numbers for July 2015 from Baseball Reference.  Today’s game (third game in the Braves series) is not included in these numbers, so Mike Bolsinger’s excellent performance would improve his numbers below.

Hitters are ranked based on their OPS (on base percentage plus slugging percentage).  Pitchers are ranked based on their WHIP (walks plus hits divided by innings pitched).  To give us a sense of the sample size, I have also included the plate appearances (PA) and innings pitched (IP).

There ought to be some way to interpolate the salary being paid to the various players with their performance. For example, Pederson at near minimum major league salary vs. somebody like Puig might be worth his low numbers based on pay per play expectancy.
As a whole, this $300 million yearly payroll isn’t producing shit. That’s not necessarily on individual players, but it falls on the front office and certainly on Mattingly for producing so little with so much.

    • The Beav says:

That’s been my mantra Bear. This team doesn’t lack talent, it lacks a leader to bring it together and get the most out of it. I don’t think you can look at our ballclub the last 8 years and say they’ve lacked talent, but they sure as hell have lacked anyone in the dugout that can bring it out and utilize it.

    • JhallWally says:

We’ve been pressing for it for years now.. Dildon is the weak link.. He cannot get these guys to play up to their potential… It’s too bad he learned from Torre… Torre got lucky with a stocked Yankees team… Before that he sucked. Dildon should start studying some more dynamic and successful managers….

  3. JhallWally says:

Great post Crash!!! Well, it is obvious why our bullpen sucks.. And really shows how much Puig and Rollins suck.. And, Pederson is struggling.. He needs to bat 7th or 8th until he makes adjustments… The pitchers have caught up with him…

  4. oldbrooklynfan says:

Well, I’ll be watching the game from the stands tonight. Me and my buddies will get to see the team up close along the left field foul line before the game. We got tickets for all 4 games. I’m hoping the Dodgers can, at least, split this series.

    • trublu4ever says:

Bring Kid K and Crew good luck today!

    • crash24now says:

We really need Kershaw and Greinke to come through. If they can’t win the first two games, I shudder to think about the chances for Zach Lee (?) and Brett Anderson (?? or his replacement????).

      • Dodger4life says:

Gotta score runs, no matter what Kershaw and Greinke do… 1 or 20, it don’t matter, it takes a bat to win the battle.

  5. Dodger4life says:

    Have a great time oldbrooklynfan.

    Go Dodgers

    OBF: Enjoy yourself, How Fun.
It seems the censors have really stopped, I see the comments about ownership, mangement and players and “the truth is out there”.
I can only hope the trade deadline yields promise, a chance, Im not hot for hamels, but surely will take that at a reasonable price, with Grienke certainly opting out, a renegotiation may not be possible, so Hamels brings some sustainability. Honestly, Grienke wants a ring and $$$, 3 years in LA and no ring, he may be heading to the Giants. Cueto looks good, but at what cost? Papelbon? would Padres redesign, and trade Kimbrel? Some lesser BP pitcher.
BOTH SP and BP need reinforcements. I was wrong about Rollins, I thought he would wake up and start to hit, but this long hovering at .200, its not happening, so why tolerate it, bring seager up.
Perderson and Puig ( peas in a pod) both need to get going, Joc is regressing, needs to adjust, Puig might be heating up, he seems very “behaved” this year, less acting, less animated, I call it “corralled”; and perhaps he needs to be more balanced, I’d take some of his showboating if it brought more HRs, RBIs and Hits. His potential is not measureable, but the reality he displays shows in the Stats above. So if those 3 could get going then our line up would be intimidating. So yeah, Donnie needs to step up, if he cant I have another replacement job for Faz.

  7. crash24now says:

Astros got Kazmir before we could get to him. I’d like to get Hamels, then re-sign Greinke. We’d have three of the top starting pitchers in baseball in 2016 (and in the 2015 playoffs).

I never imagined that Hanley would be worse at defense in left field than he was as a shortstop.

  9. trublu4ever says:

Zack has left the team to be with his wife for the birth of their first child…..may not pitch tomorrow.

    • crash24now says:

I’m okay with that – he’s got his priorities straight. However, that leaves a huge question mark for tomorrow’s pitcher, given that Zach Lee is a fill-in for Saturday. Also, we don’t yet know if Brett Anderson can go on Sunday. Who does that leave for tomorrow?

  10. crash24now says:

    Lineup

    Pederson CF
    Turner 3B
    Gonzalez 1B
    Ethier LF
    Grandal C
    Puig RF
    Hernandez 2B
    Rollins SS
    Kershaw P

Kind of amazing to see Every Day Dre as the cleanup hitter after he sucked so bad last year. He has come a long way back.

    • koufax1963 says:

Dre was put on the shelf last year. Could he qualify for come back player of the year? At least on the Dodgers team he is.
We all were rooting for him this Spring, and wow he has done well!!

  11. koufax1963 says:

I just hope this birth doesn’t upset Zack’s pitching for half the season.
Seriously Congrats to Zack and his family, I hope it inspires the whole team!

    • Dodger4life says:

If this was September and Greinke had to juggle pitching, fantasy football and a newborn…I’d be somewhat concerned. The newborn has to be easier than the fantasy football chores though..

  12. messagebear says:

The situation with Pederson is getting a little ridiculous. Not suggesting that he can’t get out of this slump, but consistently batting him leadoff is not the answer. If McGuire can’t help him shorten his swing, or whatever it takes to stop these strikeouts, maybe a stint back in AAA will do it. I don’t want to see a special talent really get into a funk and destroy his confidence. It was probably a bad idea to throw him into the homerun derby, and at the time I don’t think he even belonged in the All Star Game.

  13. crash24now says:

Jimmy puts us on the board with his ninth home run.

  14. crash24now says:

Geez, three double plays in five innings. I’d say that’s an all-time low, but I think we all know we’ve seen worse.

  15. The Beav says:

1 run off Bartolo freakin’ Colon.

  16. nedisajerk says:

Hernandez and Dilbeck known better than to jinxed someone like that.

  17. trublu4ever says:

Poor Kersh…has to try for a perfect game since we’ve only given him one lousy run …… off a freaking senior citizen!

  18. Dodger4life says:

    CRAP!

  19. Dodger4life says:

I’m not certain, but it looks like Kershaw has changed his pick-off move a tad. Before his foot looks to be more directed at first base then shifts towards home. Now he looks to be sweeping more towards home the entire time? It also looks to be a quicker motion altogether?

  20. Dodger4life says:

    Bases loaded and nobody out.

  21. crash24now says:

    Good eye by Collaspo.

  22. Dodger4life says:

Did Donnie just pinch hit for his clean-up hitter with the bases loaded and nobody out?

  23. Dodger4life says:

    Complete game shutout.

Bullpen game tomorrow…Would be my guess…

  24. trublu4ever says:

Was a little worried but we did it!

  25. koufax1963 says:

i was amazed by kershaw. the ph for dre was stupid, still we did not get a hit with the bases loaded. but i have a smile on my face, dodgers win, a shot and we are good!

  26. griz says:

    That’s our boy.

  27. Dodger4life says:

It looks like Ian Thomas will be the starter tomorrow.

  28. griz says:

Evidently Thomas is a swing man which, to me, translates to another bullpen game. I suppose Thomas could prove me wrong and I hope he does, but I don’t get this strategy of working the pen this much.

  29. crash24now says:

Basically, this means they don’t have another starter they can depend on. They ran out of starter depth. Time to replenish.

  30. oldbrooklynfan says:

I was hoping the Dodgers could take the first two games with Kershaw & Greinke but when I arrived at the park yesterday and was told Greinke wouldn’t pitch today’s game I felt a sinking feeling inside. Well it’s going to be tough but now I hear Grienke may be back for one of the weekend games. That relaxes the nerves a little.

  31. messagebear says:

The Mets must have one of the weakest hitting teams in the majors. If we can’t handle them outside of Kersh and Greinke it would be ridiculous. In fact most of the teams we face shouldn’t really scare anyone on the mound, provided we can get a couple of runs on our side. Even with our two or three poorest hitters in the lineup, usually I’d rather take our talent as compared to whoever the opposition is. That’s on paper. We just don’t seem to be able to get our guys to produce the runs on the field. Whose fault is that?

    • crash24now says:

Yesterday’s managerial decision in the ninth inning gives us a big clue. You know I’m talking about bases loaded, no outs, and cleanup hitter Andre Ethier due up. Sure, Ethier’s career splits against lefties shows an OPS in the .600’s. But Guerrero? Why did I bother showing the July stats up top? Guerrero has been pitiful lately.

Ethier is the “Proven Veteran Leader”. No, he’s not of the ilk of Adrian Gonzalez as a hitter. But Ethier of 2015 is also not Ethier of 2014. Besides, his career stats both with bases loaded as well as his clutch numbers show that he can handle that kind of situation.

Guerrero, meanwhile, has fallen apart. Then, after the Mets switch to a righty, we end up with Callaspo, who is much much worse than Ethier. Never mind that Callaspo ended up walking. I’m pretty sure that I wasn’t alone screaming at Donnie “Why is Callaspo up there?”

  32. crash24now says:

    Lineup

    Pederson CF
    Kendrick 2B
    Turner 3B
    Van Slyke 1B
    Guerrero LF
    Puig RF
    Rollins SS
    Barnes C
    Thomas P

  33. crash24now says:

This has got to be one of Donnie’s worst all year. Automatic outs at #1, #5, #6, #7, and ??? at #8.

    • crash24now says:

By the way, Joc ONLY strikes out 50% of the time when he leads off the game. That’s way too much.

    • The Beav says:

To be honest, I don’t think it matters. Thomas sucks even by AA standards. If the Mets don’t score at least 5 runs in the 2 1/3 innings he’ll pitch, then I’ll actually know just how bad the Mets hitting really is.

      • crash24now says:

You know, he’s not bad in AA – he had a 2.77 ERA and 1.039 WHIP in AA. But this is a 28 year old who sucks big time when he’s pushed to pitch to AAA or MLB hitters.

      • crash24now says:

Good thing we were in such a hurry to get him away from the Braves.

  34. messagebear says:

Back when Thomas was first acquired, there were articles indicating that someone high up in the Dodger’s organization really had the hots for him – like he really had this untapped, unrealized potential that our organization would really unlock. I’ve yet to see it so far, and I’d like to know who this front office person was that had this degree of confidence. My point is that anyone can make a mistake, but there ought to be some accountability like there is in most jobs. I’ve yet to see that principle being applicable at the Dodgers. Why can’t you see some heads roll when somebody is proven absolutely wrong? Not saying that Thomas is that important, or one mistake cannot be forgotten. It’s just that our front office is so overloaded with a bunch of “know it all” jerkoffs who keep on cashing their paychecks. The biggest one of those, of course, stands by the dugout railing during each game.

    • crash24now says:

At the Dodgers, when someone is proven wrong, such as Ned Colletti, he gets a permanent job elsewhere in the organization and is paid to hang around.

      • crash24now says:

Shit, even Frank McCourt is still hanging around waiting for some kind of big land deal.

        • crash24now says:

I did not realize the Guggs invested in Frank McCourt. Wow.

I fully expect this comment to be deleted by our ghost censor.

          http://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/dodgersnow/la-sp-dn-dodgers-mccourt-horse-jumping-20140909-story.html

“McCourt doesn’t own the ballpark, but his half interest in the land around it includes an agreement with Guggenheim Baseball Management that allows him to buy back part of the parking lots to build a sports venue.

You know, like for horses to jump over stuff. Is this a natural, or what?

In addition to the $2.15 billion he received for selling the team, the deal also called for Guggenheim to invest up to $650 million in a real estate investment fund run by McCourt.”

  35. crash24now says:

New Lineup – Guerrero scratched due to back stiffness [or is just because he’s a stiff?]

    Pederson CF
    Kendrick 2B
    Turner 3B
    Van Slyke 1B
    Puig RF
    Hernandez LF
    Rollins SS
    Barnes C
    Thomas P

At least that’s a bit of an improvement to both the lineup and the defense.

  36. trublu4ever says:

At least we got one run.

  37. trublu4ever says:

Juan Uribe is a Met now.

  38. crash24now says:

At least we got one run (again).

Hey, Joc doubled giving us a third run! Great!

  39. trublu4ever says:

6 runs…..6 more and we may be safe.

  40. nedisajerk says:

Maybe Niese shouldn’t had started since his wife is also expected a baby..

  41. crash24now says:

Nice to see Puig hit home runs again. Funny that we expect Turner to be able to do it, and aren’t surprised at all.

  42. crash24now says:

The Mets are so bad that they make Ian Thomas look good.

    • nedisajerk says:

      Mets suck against LHP.

Like Kershaw, Thomas (0-1, 5.23 ERA) is also left-handed, and the Mets are even worse against southpaws, hitting a major league-worst .216 on the season and .161 since June 17.

  43. nedisajerk says:

Why didn’t we just trade Uribe to the Mets in the 1st place?

  44. trublu4ever says:

JT is the MAN! 3 for 3

  45. lbirken says:

So much for all the issues with the lineup. If ever the Dodgers needed a big offensive effort, today is certainly one of those days. And yet so far Thomas is doing quite well.

  46. trublu4ever says:

Well, Thomas was a pleasant surprise.

  47. trublu4ever says:

    Peralta……YOU’RE FIRED!

  48. griz says:

Gotta give Thomas credit for a decent effort. The bats even got him some runs. Let us see if the pen holds up.

  49. Dodger4life says:

Torres looks as if he’s wearing Mr. Mets, blue & orange, Alpo filled dog’s dish on his head.

  50. koufax1963 says:

Surprisingly good game. Just waiting on what pitching is coming ?

  51. The Beav says:

    Stole that game.

    • Dodger4life says:

      Oldbrooklynfan will happily agree…

      • oldbrooklynfan says:

I was joyfully surprised by Thomas’ performance and was somewhat surprised he wasn’t returned for the 6th inning. Peralta was just the opposite, I couldn’t wait for him to be taken out before he ruined the game and embarrass us by giving the game back to the Mets. From that point on the game seemed closer than it was, but it was a big win with the Giants winning later on.

  52. trublu4ever says:

Very surprised at this outcome……happy, but wasn’t expecting this!

  53. 32and53fan says:

Nice couple of games in New York.
Need to keep it going. Giants are red hot now, winning 9 of last 10 games. 3 game lead could vanish quickly.
Friedman/Zaidi/Byrnes: Bring in one or two top of rotation type guys before August.

I haven’t been following this blog as much lately, but have visited at least once a day. What messages were deleted? Profanity or critical comments about management? I looked and couldn’t find any transaction logs available for free WordPress accounts. Akismet has moved a couple of valid comments to trash thinking they were spam. They didn’t appear have any controversial content however. The only thing I can think of is that since I gave everybody editor privileges, somebody is misusing them. I hate to think that is the case, but it is a possibility.

I hate to be censored, but that happened to me yesterday. I had a comment deleted from the Facebook group Baby Boomers 1946-1964. The topic was slang/phrases from our early days. I had a particle board shelf collapse and block my way into my bedroom. I commented that I muttered “You got to be shitting me!” when it happened. It was deleted by the moderator within a day.

    Collapsed shelf

    • Dodger4life says:

      You printing Palomino money???

    • The Beav says:

Comments were deleted quite regularly 32. Some contained profanity, but many were only critical of Donnie or player where there was no cursing. Sometimes only part of the post was deleted.

      • 32and53fan says:

Thanks. That is weird. I hope it doesn’t happen again.
I wish I had access to a complete web log to see how many lurkers we have here. Maybe the Whiz Kids in the front office got wind of this blog and ordered one of their minions to hack it. LOL

  54. Dodger4life says:

    Zach Fuckin’ Fina Lee”
Dude best be on fire tonight!!

  55. messagebear says:

It will be interesting to watch Lee’s performance today. He is going against possibly the worst hitting club at this time. I can accept giving up a couple of runs, but I’d like to see some decent control, given that he’s now been in organized ball for some time and shouldn’t be shaky just because it’s his major league debut. Now that he’s here, I would also like to see him given a couple of chances at starting to see how he can settle in. His record at the AAA level may not be overly impressive, but I think it is sufficiently solid. So, good luck, Lee!

  56. Dodger4life says:

Oldbrooklynfan will have been in attendance for not only the Michael Conforto (Redmond High Baseball Alum, such as myself) debut, but the much anticipated debut of Zach Lee (I’m just a tad jealous). Hopefully, he’ll be in attendance for another Dodger win, or two as well.

    • Dodger4life says:

I remember going to the Kingdome and seeing McGwire and Canseco for the first time. They were in front of the dugout swinging bats. They were both just ripped with muscles. I had no clue who they were at the time. I was scrambling through the program within seconds though.

      • Dodger4life says:

Kind of funny how my father always took me to see the A’s play…My trips to the Big A as a kid were always against the A’s as well. The Big A trips were during the A’s heydays of the 70’s. We went on camera day one year and I had borrowed a friends camera. I took photos of Reggie, Vida Blue, a whole sha-bang of guys. Then I forgot to take the roll of film out before I returned the camera. I never did see the results of my work…

      • The Beav says:

Funny, a co-workers best friend was dating McGwire back in the 80s. Not sure if he was a pro yet or still in college.

That seems like a hundred years ago…

  57. Dodger4life says:

When a team doesn’t run all that often…does it really matter how much speed the lead-off guy possesses?

    • Dodger4life says:

Shouldn’t something like being able to make contact with the BALL be a factor.

      • Dodger4life says:

At what point does the analytics dept., realize that Joc’s numbers in the 1 hole are sinking, sinking and sinking?

  58. Dodger4life says:

Can you say back to back bullpen games…

  59. trublu4ever says:

I know Zach is struggling but, it would be a little better if the ump would give him the same strike zone as Harvey!

  60. Dodger4life says:

That was a big out for Lee…the one at home where Joc nailed Granderson.

  61. Dodger4life says:

    NEXT!!

  62. messagebear says:

Up against Harvey, and our team not hitting worth a damn anyway, might as well leave Lee in and let him eat up a few innings anyway.
On another wave length, I wish we’d get rid of Puig for good and for somebody decent.

  63. crash24now says:

    Rollins’ bat is awakening?

  64. crash24now says:

Upper deck HR against Lee. I don’t know how many major leaguers he’s gonna fool with that curve ball. Not when his fast ball is 88 mph.

  65. lbirken says:

Ok, only one start but now I can see why the Dodgers were reluctant to bring Lee up to the big club. Will he get another opportunity soon?

    • crash24now says:

I don’t think he will. Greinke on Sunday, day off Monday, Anderson on Tuesday, Bolsinger on Wednesday, and Kershaw on Friday. After that, we’ll hopefully have somebody like Hamels or Cueto or Smardzija or ???

  66. Dodger4life says:

Well this quarterback is just as bad as the last one…

  67. Dodger4life says:

I just read that Guerrero will wave his option to opt out of his contract after any season in which he is traded for extra money. I’m confused? Who’s gonna give him more that the 2 years and $10 million he has coming now?

    http://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/la-sp-dodgers-mets-20150725-story.html

    • lbirken says:

I saw this article earlier today and found his comments interesting. Players seem to have a lot of leverage with all the opt out clauses. Of course, his agent is Boras who seems to have little trouble fleecing willing GM’s.

      • Dodger4life says:

The guy is not worth $5 million. Not after watching him struggle on defense. Just my two cents.

        • Dodger4life says:

I’d be willing to bet that if he was DFA’d. He’d be in the minors before long…I think his power comes from the wheelhouse. Pitch him away from this and he would fail to hit the long ball. So, I doubt he is even DH material.

  68. lbirken says:

Not sure but on TV it looked as if Joc was treated to some ice cream after hitting the home run.

  69. Dodger4life says:

Bring in the 3rd string quarterback and alert the practice squad guy to begin loosening up!

  70. crash24now says:

Don’t bother bringing in another pitcher. Just let Tsao finish up the game, then package him up with Lee and send them both packing to OKC on the same airplane.

  71. crash24now says:

    Mercy rule, anybody?

  72. lbirken says:

Nice of the Dodgers to pitch batting practice to the Mets.

  73. crash24now says:

    Must be almost football season.

  74. griz says:

If you’re going to get your ass kicked, you might as well be thorough. This must be why we haven’t seen Lee to this point.

  75. crash24now says:

We need a field goal to get back within striking distance. Would make it 12-5.

  76. crash24now says:

Dang it! Now we need two touchdowns.

  77. crash24now says:

Donnie should have Kike pitch the eighth inning.

  78. Dodger4life says:

    UNACCEPTABLE!!

  79. lbirken says:

Too bad OBF had to suffer this game in person.

  80. crash24now says:

Damn that Uribe! I told you he was going to hurt us.

  81. Dodger4life says:

We’re out of available pitchers I think?

  82. Dodger4life says:

Uribe being the Rally Killer again!

  83. crash24now says:

    Whew!

    It’s over!

  84. trublu4ever says:

    BRUTAL!

    • JhallWally says:

      Wow, what an ass whipping!!

Along with acquiring top drawer starting pitching at the deadline, I certainly hope our braintrust plans on fixing our pathetic bullpen.. The bullpen this year is no better than last year. And we all know how that turned out..

  85. crash24now says:

Well, as fun as that was (not), please note that our lead is down to two games. Thankfully, Greinke is pitching tomorrow.

Zach Lee, 13.50 ERA, 2.570 WHIP. Ouch, that’s gonna leave a mark.

  87. The Beav says:

You had to figure that we’d lose in the Lee/Harvey match-up. Appropriately, we got killed.

I’d hoped though that Lee would’ve at least had a decent outing, if nothing else than to increase his trade value. I’d say he’s worth next to nothing now. Evidently the pinnacle of his career is going to be AAA.

  88. oldbrooklynfan says:

It’s funny how it worked out yesterday, right after Cole Hamel’s no hitter (which we saw the last out on the Giant screen) the Dodgers made the whole world (well it seemed that way) know how badly they need a starting pitcher. It was tough to look at and to top it off it took me more than two hours or so to get home due to a track fire.
    Well, there’s still today.

  89. griz says:

I’d been curious and critical as to why the Dodgers kept burning up the pen and not bringing up a pitcher from OKC and yesterday I found out why. We got away with one with Thomas, but how often will he be able to do that? I saw somewhere Lee’s fastball tops out at 88mph. Is that true? If so, it’s doubtful he will ever be effective in the majors.

Meanwhile Hamels’s stock just went up.

  90. trublu4ever says:

Scratch Cueto off our list….he’s just about to be a Royal.

    • Dodger4life says:

You can’t rent a dynasty…I’d rather have a solid piece for the future.

      • trublu4ever says:

        Me too!

        • trublu4ever says:

i did hear rumors that we offered Puig and prospects for him….so, if we go after someone better, I think we have pieces another team would want.

          • Dodger4life says:

Puig and prospects for Cueto, or the whole Reds pitching staff??? Puig is under team control until 2019. With a sizable chunk of his money having been in the way of a bonus that has already been payed. That alone makes him highly valuable.

          • Dodger4life says:

            Cot’s Contracts on Puig

            15:$4.5M, 16:$5.5M, 17:$6.5M, 18:$7.5M

May opt in to arbitration once he earns 3 years of Major League service time

            ML service: 1.119

          • Dodger4life says:

Unlike Kemp. Puig isn’t injured, or at least he hasn’t been under the knife. With the statements made above about his contractual value. It is still a decent bet that his value will increase in the near future. Barring he doesn’t have any Milton Bradley moments. I also think that Puig will eventually discover that conduct unbecoming of a good teammate and representative of MLB, isn’t all that conducive to signing a mega-contract?

          • trublu4ever says:

I really don’t know if it’s true….you know how some like to spread rumors.

          • Dodger4life says:

Nobody is untouchable…I seen where they were speculating that Cueto and Chapman were on the radar. Still though Cueto is a free-agent in 2016, Chapman in 2017. Chapman would have to be in a high risk category as a closer that throws in the 100’s. How long can he continue to do this?

          • Dodger4life says:

I think that with all the resources the Dodgers have at their disposal, meaning money, prospects and young and upcoming talent on the 25 man. They can do better, especially if we are talking 25 man roster trades?

  91. Dodger4life says:

The good news is that the overwhelming favorite Hamel’s hasn’t gone anywhere, yet. And the Dodgers haven’t acquired anyone else.

  92. Dodger4life says:

I miscalculated the time difference by an hour. I’m tuned in now!

  93. The Beav says:

Been gone all day and… what a team we have!!

Might as well chalk up another year to the streak. I’m not all that sure this team can even make the playoffs, but I’m sure as all hell they get bounced as soon as they get there.

  94. griz says:

Very good. Set Pederson up for failure.

  95. The Beav says:

Another pathetic ending for an underwhelmingly team.

  96. griz says:

Very good. Set Uribe up for success.

  97. lbirken says:

Not much to say. Actually, I have a lot to say but it won’t change anything. I am sure Kenley would like the last pitch back but then again, how often has he entered a game in that situation.

  98. The Beav says:

I doubt the new FO can pull off any kind of a meaningful trade. That would require obtaining at least another Kershaw or Greinke because they’d have to overcome not only the opposition, but the apathetic offense and Donnie’s ineptness too.

  99. lbirken says:

We all knew this road trip would be challenging and might say a lot about this team. We saw pretty much the same team that cannot score against good pitching as we saw prior to the break and the same team that has serious pitching deficits so other than a few “small ball” plays, nothing has changed. The best way for them to win is if a Dodger pitcher can throw a shutout. And we have seen a 4.5 game lead shrink to 1.5 at the moment. Yes, it was good to see the Dodgers extend today’s game but not good to see them leave the go ahead run on third.

Still trying to stay optimistic but somehow the Dodgers need to put together a long winning streak.

  100. Dodger4life says:

The Dodgers only have 30 more games until they return to division play. Of course the 31st game is against the Giants who have manhandled the Dodgers this season so far!

    • Dodger4life says:

The way I’m seeing it…Mattingly should be back home in Indiana coaching a 7th month old on Sept 3rd.

  101. griz says:

Hey! I heard Uribe just got traded to the A’s.

  102. oldbrooklynfan says:

Well, it was a beautiful day at Citi Field. You know the rest.

    • Dodger4life says:

Glad the weather cooperated oldbrooklynfan. Let’s hope the Dodgers can do the same in the near future.

  103. Dodger4life says:

I’m looking at the schedule for the month of August, plus the final day of July, as that is when the 1st series in August begins for both the Giants and the Dodgers.

The Giants embark on a 10 game road trip that shows no days of rest within it. They have 10 games on consecutive days.
    (3) Rangers, (3) Braves, (4) Cubs

They then get a day for travel, before playing 13 more games without rest.
    (2) Astros (4) Nationals, at home
    (3) Cards (4) Pirates on the road

They then get another day for travel, before playing 16 more games without rest.
    (3) Cubs (3) Cards (3) Dodgers (4) Rockies (3) D-Backs (which concludes on Sept 9th), all on the road.

Thats 2 days off for travel, 3 if you count the 30th of July and that’s all the rest they’ll get to play 39 games.

The Dodgers on the other hand have 4 travel days and an off day if you count the 30th of July, starting with the Angels at home (3)

They then get a day for travel, before playing a 13 game stretch that begins with a travel day to Philly (3), then Pittsburgh (3) then back home to play the Nats (3) and Reds (4).

They then get another day for travel to Oakland (2), then another day for travel to Houston (3), then, yet another day for travel to Cincy (3) followed by a homestand the next day against the Cubs (3), then the Giants (3) then at San Diego (4) and at Anaheim (3) (which also concludes on Sept. 9th).

The Giants get 2 days for travel and an off day in Sept.
The Dodgers get 1 day for travel and 1 off day in Sept.

After a (4) game series with each other, to end September and usher in October, both clubs finish at home.
    Giants (3) Rockies
    Dodgers (3) Padres

  104. Dodger4life says:

Crash, I just wanted to say I think you’ve been doing a good job of changing the thread, I have enjoyed your style. Especially with the knowledge you have for obtaining and presenting stats. Keep up the good work.

You two could team up like Jimmy Kimmel and Guillermo!!
“And now we’re gonna throw the show over to a little, BIG segment we call Trublu and her Rally Boobs!”

  105. Dodger4life says:

I still want to see our beloved boys in blue, win it all in 2015!

    How ’bout you?

  106. griz says:

Sure, I want to see them win and follow each game and transaction pretty closely. I just wonder a lot of the time whether this group has the pizazz needed to reach the ultimate goal. Not only the players on the field, but the entire organization. I’ve been wondering if acquiring a couple of pitchers will make any difference, seeing as getting runs can be such a struggle.

    • The Beav says:

You hit the nail on the head Griz. This team has more holes than Swiss cheese – bullpen, offense, manager. Couple upgrades in pitching won’t make much difference.

I read the players were disappointed Cuerto wasn’t acquired. That there tells you this team doesn’t believe in itself and that it can get the job done. There’s so much talent on this team they shouldn’t have to worry about acquiring any frontline starter, but they’re a defeated bunch that only believes it can win with the very best players. As we’ve seen in the past, no amount of frontline players, be it a pitcher or a Manny type hitter can even get them over the hump because its always something. I happen to believe that all starts with Donnie and the coaching, but wherever you think the problem lies, its a very real and palpable thing. You don’t see it with KC, you don’t see it with the Stro’s, and you sure as hell don’t see it with the Giants – all lesser teams talent-wise, but so superior team-wise. They believe in themselves and trust each. Our boys never know what they’re supposed to do or when they’re supposed to do it. That in a nutshell is the difference, and why our team will never win anything.

  107. JhallWally says:

This team not only needs a front line starter, it needs a complete bullpen overhaul….. We all saw what happened last year in the playoffs with a crummy bullpen… We should also revisit our batting coach… These guys are not getting it done on offense…

  108. Dodger4life says:

I’m not disputing anything that has been said before. Hell, I’ve probably been one of the season’s biggest critics. Although, I can’t help remembering how good these guys played at the beginning of the year. Of course the pitching within the league has become stronger, the resolve under Donnie’s tutelage weaker, and the unknown rookies such as Bolsinger, Pederson, Hernandez, Garcia, Liberatore and Guerrero aren’t so unkown any longer. But still, the first few weeks of the season the team came together and they played well. They played like a team that was going to make a mark. I still hold out some hope that they’ll make that mark and that it isn’t accompanied by a sudden screeching tire sound.

  109. oldbrooklynfan says:

I’m sure most of you know that the Dodgers have never made the postseason 3 years in a row. This is the first goal I’d like to see accomplished.

  110. Dodger4life says:

Yimi Garcia and Adam Liberatore both pitched extremely well all through Spring Training and both had tremendous success at the beginning of the season. Joc when he was forced into the lead-off role by Rollins unsuccessful efforts at the spot, took the bull by the horns so to speak. Bolsinger, and even Frias showed resolve towards being valued members of the pitching staff after and even before McCarthy went down. Even Yasiel when he first came up to the show…was extremely focused and aware of the job forthcoming. He hit everything and hit everything to all fields. The veterans such as Turner, Ethier, Van Slyke, Kendrick, Gonzo and even Rollins, yes he began the season with a bang, stepped it up a notch. You can lay blame in a number of different places here…Donnie, his staff, each individual player, upper management, injuries, or even say it’s the long drawn out season, which brings me to my point. A few years back the Boise State Football Team, a squad that repeatedly accomplished more with less, than I’d dare say, just about anyone, had a slogan. A slogan that I think hit’s home fairly well. “Don’t Confuse Commitment With Complacency!!” All of the above mentioned events I do believe followed this simple directive. This if you ask me is what this club needs to get back to doing regularly, without fail.

    • Dodger4life says:

They should get some help in the way of additions. They should get some help in the way of getting healthier. They should get some rest in the way the schedule lines up. They should find an elevated sense of competitiveness as the season winds down.
They should be tired of going home empty handed as far as championships go. How long has it been since Gibson and crew orchestrated the one man band we all call Vinny to harmonize the immortal words, “In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened.”??? I’d like to hear Vinny play a Championship Tune again before we turn the mic over to someone else…I would think the rest of the Dodger World would too! Including and probably even more so, the guys on the field. They may be forever known as Vinny’s Magical Curtain Call Squad!

      • Dodger4life says:

Vinny relays the blow-by-blow of the bottom of the ninth, culminating with what he considers to be “the most theatrical home run” he’s seen in his career.

If I categorized home runs that I’ve seen, without a doubt the monumental one is Henry’s… but I’ve seen a lot of classic, great home runs. Gibson’s was probably the most theatrical home run I’ve ever seen. In the ninth, after the outs were made, we went into commercial, so I talked to the truck, which I rarely do, and I said ’Fellas, when we come out of commercial, stay with me.’ So the first shot out of commercial was the dirigible floating above, so I said, ’If you’re here in the ballpark, and if you have a pair of binoculars, the first thing you’d do is look in the Dodger dugout’—and wham! there was a shot of the dugout. And I said, ’If you look the length of the dugout to see where Kirk Gibson is…’—and they panned the whole dugout—’…obviously, if he’s not in the dugout, he’s not gonna play tonight.’ Meanwhile, Kirk is sitting in the dressing room, he’s got bad legs, can’t play. He’s got two huge sacks of ice, one on each leg, and he’s sitting there by himself looking at the TV monitor at that dramatic sweep of the dugout, and listening to my ’He won’t play,’ and all that stuff. It did something to him, and so he yells out, ’Bullshit Vinny!’ and throws the ice down. And he said to the kid in the locker room, ’Tell Tommy [Lasorda] I’ll be right down.’ Now, as the inning progressed, we had Mike Davis up there—outfielder, aggressive hitter, didn’t walk that much. But fate had it so that Mike walked, and while he’s heading to first, the camera [snaps] takes a shot of the dugout, and I said something like, ’Guessss whooo’s comin’…’ And here he comes, with a bat as his cane, hobbling, and then of course, fouling off those little pitches, any one of which if stays fair he’s dead ’cause he can’t run, and I kept saying, almost praying, please don’t let him strikeout. He’s had such a great year that on this national stage, just let him hit a ball hard. So when he hits the home run, the whole building… from the empty dugout to the walk, to him suddenly using the bat as a cane… it was just the most theatrical home run. And the place went crazy. I don’t know where it came from, but out came a line that later on I thought only could’ve come from The Boss. That line, ’In a year of the improbable, the impossible has happened’—which, I must admit, is a pretty good line—it just totally came out of nowhere. My heart, that’s where it came from, and God helped me out.”

  111. messagebear says:

Whatever happens with the Trade Deadline, we can be guaranteed that the Dodgers won’t get full value for whatever they decide to give up in such a trade. A couple of years back, Ned established the premise that he was a patsy for all the other GM’s and could be counted on to give more than he got particularly for over the hill veteran “talent”. Today the same is true because of all the money the Guggenheims have invested in the franchise. When you over- pay for the franchise, as was the case with the $2 billion plus, why would any GM expect that you won’t continue to overpay for any player that you desire in trade? When you have the highest payroll by far, and have been known to give out some outrageous contracts, you deserve to be the patsy at trade time, if nothing else to continue to pay the salaries of people no longer productive for your club.

    • Dodger4life says:

I wouldn’t call the new régimes trades unsuccessful, to date. Gordon and Haren for Barnes, Hernandez, the guy we sent to the Angels for Kendrick and a guy who we all despise in Hatcher. Plus the Kemp deal has worked out fairly well. Sure we had to pay about $32 million of Kemp’s salary and all of Harens. But straddled with the former régimes debt and choices, I wouldn’t call these moves a bad decision.

      • Dodger4life says:

The two #1 draft picks in Heaney and Elfin are unseasoned pitchers. We all know how risky it is to count on an arm to be healthy in the distant future. So, obtaining a pitcher that is closer to your need to use him, might not be a bad move either. Sure both these guys could pan out to be Aces, but as you said bear, with the money available to the team, they should be able to find a needed arm now, or in the future.

David Price would jump to the top of the wish list for the Dodgers if he became available. They may see Jeff Samardzija of the White Sox and Yovani Gallardo, who’s with Texas, as possible backup plans.

Dodgers GM Farhan Zaidi said they tried for Cueto and that they remained “optimistic” they’d do something by the deadline.
