The New Season Begins

image

At long last, the regular season is here.

The opening series with the Padres may give us a glimpse of how this year will play out.  With the addition of Matt Kemp and James Shields, the San Diego crew has a great chance to be a very good team this year.  Now that they grabbed Craig Kimbrel, a 27 year old that many consider to be the best closer in the MLB, they are looking very dangerous.

To fill his team with some of the elite players in the majors, A.J. Presley gave up six of his top ten prospects.  They are now the most intriguing team in baseball.  Of course,  that is all on paper.  Starting today both the retooled Dodgers and Padres will start to see how all of their offseason moves work out.

I’m looking forward to another season, made all the more fun by our conversations right here on OTD.

It’s time for Dodger baseball!

    Play ball!

  2. 32and53fan says:

Friedman and Co. had talks about Kimbrel, but couldn’t reach an agreement. Padres gave up their top pitching prospect and accepted Melvin Upton’s salary, deemed the third worst contract in the MLB. They are all in this year and might be tough to beat.

Looks like the Padres mean business.

  4. messagebear says:

Frankly I’m not too excited about a team with a $270 million payroll that won’t have its play shown on TV.
    So, start the season, Dodgers!
F*** the Guggenheims and the cable company!

  5. crash24now says:

    Opening Day Lineup! Go Dodgers!

    Rollins SS
    Puig RF
    Gonzalez 1B
    Kendrick 2B
    Crawford LF
    Uribe 3B
    Pederson CF
    Ellis C
    Kershaw P

  6. kahliforni says:

Ellis in the line-up because Kershaw needs his blankie? So much for the Kemp trade. I hope Kemp hits a grand slam today. I’m with bear, F*** the Guggenheims.

  7. oldbrooklynfan says:

What a thing to wake up to: The Padres trading for All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel. Making things a lot tougher.

  8. zonadodger says:

    Finally opening day

  9. vl4eccjr says:

Well ladies & germs, it sure looks like the Puds mean business. Going all in getting Kimbrel means the boys in blue better jump out to a substantial lead.
Damn shame with the blackout situation for the local fans. 😦
    GO DODGERS!!

  10. vl4eccjr says:

Fox sports just announced that Kimbrel has landed at LAX. Doubtful he will be there at game time.

  11. crash24now says:

    It’s time for Dodger baseball!!!!

  12. crash24now says:

#1 Kemp at-bat – he hurts us with an RBI single

  13. crash24now says:

Kershaw settles down against the 6-7-8 hitters.

  14. vl4eccjr says:

Hanley hit one out in Philly for the Bosox.

  15. crash24now says:

#2 at-bat Kemp grounds out to Uribe.

  16. oldbrooklynfan says:

Looks like this is going to be a tough one.

  17. crash24now says:

Good move getting Rollins to steal a base with two outs, but Puig can’t convert it to a run. Wait – did I just say that Donnie made a good managerial decision?

  18. oldbrooklynfan says:

    A-GON

  19. lbirken says:

Tough game so far. Gonzo takes a little pressure off but will Puig and Pederson do their part?

  20. griz says:

Should see the reworked pen soon. Kershaw has thrown a too many pitches for four innings.

  21. oldbrooklynfan says:

Nice shots by Howie & CC

  22. zonadodger says:

SD defense not that great lol…..Nice going wil myers

  23. crash24now says:

Way to go, Gonzo, Kendrick, and Crawford!

  24. lbirken says:

I know it is only two at bats but Pederson still looks overmatched at the plate.

  25. lbirken says:

Looked as if Shields had his eyes closed on the last pitch.

  26. oldbrooklynfan says:

    Unbelievable.

  27. crash24now says:

#3 at bat Kemp with a 2-RBI double

Whatever happened to the “Do Not Trade Within the Division” rule?

  28. lbirken says:

Kemp is taking advantage of his opportunities today.

  29. zonadodger says:

    Kemp killin it lol

  30. lbirken says:

Missed opportunity for the Dodgers leaving two on base.

  31. oldbrooklynfan says:

(counting Saturday) a Dodger batter has struck out in 14 straight innings

  32. lbirken says:

Wow, two walks in a row from Kershaw.

  33. crash24now says:

Another HR for Hanley, this time a grand salami.

  34. lbirken says:

Now we see what the retooled bull pen can do to keep this game close.

  35. vl4eccjr says:

Well Hanley went deep twice with 5 RBI’s today.

  36. griz says:

I’m also lol. Hanley should get along just fine with that left field wall.

  37. oldbrooklynfan says:

    Nice going YIMI

  38. oldbrooklynfan says:

    AWRIGHT!!!

  39. lbirken says:

So far the trades by both teams have paid off today.

  40. crash24now says:

    Kendrick ties it up!

  41. zonadodger says:

    Howie bright spot today

  42. lbirken says:

Vin, thanks for the reminder about the Dodgers struggles last season to come from behind to win after the 7th inning.

  43. zonadodger says:

    Jroll

  44. oldbrooklynfan says:

    YOO HO JRoll.

  45. zonadodger says:

    JRoll yeah baby

  46. vl4eccjr says:

    Woo Hoo!
    J-Rollin!!!

  47. lbirken says:

Did not see that coming from Rollins. Wow. Thought we were in trouble when A.J. popped up the bunt attempt. Let’s not forget the inning began when Pederson took a close pitch for a walk and the error.

  48. crash24now says:

Rollins having a great first day as a Dodger! Yeah, he’s got some pop.

  49. lbirken says:

Double play, that pitcher’s best friend.

  50. vl4eccjr says:

    Nice job Hatcher!

  51. zonadodger says:

    Nice job boys

  52. crash24now says:

    Woo Hoo! Winning Streak!

  53. koufax1963 says:

really nice to see the new guys-rollins and kendrick- contribute, what a way to earn integrity on the team- I liked the way donnie managed SVS PH but got walked oh well, Uribe impatient, joc looked fine and on we go with the season, I am so Happy this has started, Rollins Thank you!

  54. lbirken says:

Hatcher gets the job done! That was a terrific game with ups and downs for both teams. A come from behind victory on a day when Kershaw was good for most but certainly not for him. The relief pitching gave the Dodgers a chance to win. All in all a great start to the season.

  55. lbirken says:

And Vinny continues to prove he is still the most popular and valuable Dodger of them all. I feel blessed to be still having him call Dodger games.

    • vl4eccjr says:

      Hear here!
      He’s the GOAT!!

    • kahliforni says:

lbirk, I figured you’d be in Chavez Ravine today. Tomorrow? Still miss Kemp.

      • lbirken says:

I share season tickets with a group of people and I did not get opening day. I am ok with it. While it would have been great to be at today’s game, I would rather be at playoff games if I am going to deal with large crowds and traffic.

I miss Kemp just like I missed Garvey when he left the Dodgers but I am not going to obsess over it. I wish him well except when he plays the Dodgers.

  56. griz says:

Good start. Kershaw wasn’t at his best, but the pen held them while the offense got enough to win. I’ve got to give Kemp some credit for a three rbi day. Looking at Ellis’ at bats today, you can see why Grandal looked good to the front office.

  57. enchantedbeaver says:

Showed some spunk today that they didn’t last year… a win after the 7th inning. Highlights looked like they got a gift or two from Myers and Kemp, and they took advantage of them. Nice way to pick-up Kersh on a semi-off day.

    • JhallWally says:

Woo-Hoo, win streak!!!!!!! Nice team effort… Although, Puig, Uribe, and Ellis sucked at the dish!!!!

      • trublu4ever says:

….and, my man kept the 8th inning alive with his hustle to first base!

        • enchantedbeaver says:

Did you notice on Ellis’ popped up bunt that he was just standing there watching? If they’d have collided any harder and the ball dropped they still could’ve thrown him out by a country mile.

I doubt Donnie even said anything to him.

  58. I like this phrase 🙂

  59. oldbrooklynfan says:

Well, 1 down and 161 to go before the postseason.

  60. 32and53fan says:

Now that Opening Day is over, I hope that Ellis catching Kershaw exclusively is over as well.
The dynamic duo of Rollins and Kendrick got off to a great start. I didn’t know that JRoll is 5’7″ until Vinny mentioned in the highlight video of his homer that he is only 5’8″ but has some pop. Shades of The Toy Cannon, Jimmy Wynn.

    • 32and53fan says:

Jon Weisman doesn’t like personal catchers either, if they drag down the team offensively.

      http://dodgers.mlblogs.com/2015/04/07/personal-catchers-schmersonal-catchers/

      • crash24now says:

They should treat Grandal/Ellis as a platoon, for the most part. Grandal starts against RHPs, Ellis starts against LHPs. Their career batting splits (BA/OBP/SLG/OPS):

        Grandal vs RHP 252/356/242/780
        Grandal vs LHP 225/335/379/714

        Ellis vs RHP 246/338/349/686
        Ellis vs LHP 227/361/359/720

But then mix in the fact that catchers will need rest in a day game after a night game. Hopefully a split of 100 games / 62 games or 110 games/52 games will keep both guys rested and healthy.

  61. crash24now says:

Greinke: AJ, you suck. I’m pitching to Grandal.

My guess at lineup tonight with Grandal instead of Ellis.

    Rollins ss
    Puig rf
    Gonzalez 1b
    Kendrick 2b
    Grandal c
    Crawford lf
    Uribe 3b
    Pederson cf
    Greinke p

I still don’t like the slow Gonzalez hitting 3rd rather than cleanup.

  62. 32and53fan says:

The little rain that passed through won’t stop the Dodgers juggernaut. The tarp is off the field and the team is ready to rake.

I took a selfie while replacing a tarp. It was barely raining when I began, only a faint mist. It got stronger, so I took a piece of the old tarp, poked a hole, and put on my emergency poncho.
I don’t like seeing the Dodgers logo backwards, so I flipped the photo, and added some background blur just for fun.

I hope that the new guys continue to produce and the Puig and Uribe join the party. The was a sweet come from behind win yesterday. Grienke looks ready to go.

  63. trublu4ever says:

    Play Dre! Play Dre!

  64. vl4eccjr says:

    Pitch count!

  65. oldbrooklynfan says:

Good try by Rollins but to no avail.

  66. crash24now says:

    Let’s have some offense, boys!

  67. 32and53fan says:

    Way to go AGon!

  68. oldbrooklynfan says:

    AGon

  69. oldbrooklynfan says:

    WAytogo Howie.

  70. 32and53fan says:

I knew Kendrick would be clutch.

  71. nellyjune says:

    Well, that was nice!

  72. 32and53fan says:

Since I can’t watch the game, I don’t know if Howie had a chance to steal 3rd. In general, why try when you are already in scoring position? Maybe he thought Crawford was more likely to fly out than to get a hit.

  73. trublu4ever says:

    Geez….DEFENSE!!!!!

  74. oldbrooklynfan says:

It’s hard to believe Rollins missed that pop up.

  75. vl4eccjr says:

Donnie over thinking things again. I’d have left Baez in.
Error or not, Rollins is still a big defensive upgrade from Hanley.

  76. vl4eccjr says:

    POOF!!!

  77. trublu4ever says:

Donnie is up to his usual tricks!

  78. oldbrooklynfan says:

We need another big inning here.

  79. oldbrooklynfan says:

    AGon, I felt that coming.

  80. trublu4ever says:

    Yo, Adrian!

  81. vl4eccjr says:

    G’night folks!

  82. trublu4ever says:

    Kaboom!

  83. 32and53fan says:

    Meltdown!

    Smiley face

  84. 32and53fan says:

I hope they get this horrible game out of their system.

  85. oldbrooklynfan says:

    Well, we’ll try again tomorrow.
    Good Night.

  86. Nedsucks says:

Thought this was supposed to be a good defensive team.

  87. griz says:

From hero to goat? Probably not. Sounds like Rollins had plenty of company.

  88. koufax1963 says:

Sorry but I am not going to sour about the dodgers after game 2 of a 162 game season. To quote Tommy, your win 60 games , you lose 60 games, it is what you do with the remaining 42 that puts you in post season or not.
Can I complain, sure, and it feels good, but Rollins errors were not like him. Grandal, should of done the step out of the baseline and thrown down to first, instead of a sniper shot in the back. Grienke was good, and he raves about having Grandal as catcher. Puig seemed like he lost track of outs on a catch, letting Norris tag to 3rd.
yes it could of been a Dodgers win, but yep here it comes , the Bullpen, certainly I wished Jensen could of come in, but every pitcher from the BP just sucked and that is a concern.
A-Gon thank you for the thrill of having a chance to win.
The Padres are restocked and seem to be a serious challenger, McCarthy will really need to be on his game today.

  89. crash24now says:

Why in the world does Torre Jr. use six relievers in three innings?

    • crash24now says:

He’s treating Paco and JP as LOOGY’s. They are not LOOGY’s, they are high quality relievers. Leave them in for more than one batter.

      • Nedsucks says:

Quite simply, Mattingly’s an idiot and has no business managing in the big leagues. I think had they had a different manager over the last 7 years they may have already won a championship or two.

        • trublu4ever says:

I agree. If we would have gone to extra innings, which at the time was possible, Donnie would have run out of pitchers.

          • The Beav says:

I think its going to become woefully apparent to Friedman & Co. that Donnie’s totally inadequate as a manager. They haven’t had to live with his poor decisions day in and day out yet, but I’d bet by June they’re going to be talking internally about a replacement for 2016. Since he’ll still be under contract though I’m sure he’ll get an “advisory” position.

          • The Beav says:

In fact, I’d be willing to bet that they’ll clean house with all of the coaches next year. Bundy and Wallach don’t seem like they know what they’re doing either what with Bundy’s sending runners when they’ve got no chance and Wallach’s poor positioning of the OF. I was telling DodgerEric the other day its like giving the Three Stooges the keys to the space shuttle.

          • crash24now says:

The new front office just needs to watch repeats of that playoff game against the Braves where Donnie tells Uribe to bunt, Uribe fouls two bunts, then wins the game with a two run homer into the back of the bullpen. Then they can fire Donnie.

  90. crash24now says:

This 18 year old kid is starting the season in AA Tulsa:

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=urias-000jul

In a year or so, Urias will be our #2 or #3 starter, Seager will be shortstop, and Schebler will be in left field.

  91. oldbrooklynfan says:

I think the worse part of last night’s defeat was the fact that Greinke was outstanding and pitched good enough to win.
It’s tough to lose after a starting pitcher has a performance like that.

    • 32and53fan says:

He would have allowed zero runs if Crawford judged the fly ball he dive for and missed a little better.

  92. The Beav says:

Did I see Collie making an appearance earlier?

We need Collie’s numbers also. Feel free to add anyone else I missed – I just cut and pasted from a couple threads ago.

    D4 100-62
    Crash 96-66
    32and53 95-67
    Sparkle 95-67
    Vl4 94-68
    Koufax 94-68
    Kahli 93-69
    JHall 93-69
    Zona 93-69
    Lbirken 92-70
    Tru 92-70
    OBF 91-71
    NellyJune 91-71
    Enchanted 90-72
    Griz 89-73
    Bear 88-74
    Collie 88-74

  93. Two games down and 160 to go. Sure hope Mattingly wakes up from his nap and learns to manage properly.

  94. 32and53fan says:

    Dodgers lineup
    SS Rollins
    RF Puig
    1B Gonzalez
    2B Kendrick
    C Grandal
    LF Crawford
    3B Uribe
    CF Pederson
    P Mccarthy

Last night was an aberration. The real team will show up tonight.

  95. crash24now says:

What? Is Crawford blind now, he can’t see the ball in left field?

  96. crash24now says:

See Crawford? See how Justin Upton plays LF? Do that.

  97. vl4eccjr says:

Uribe finally joins the hit parade.

  98. crash24now says:

Nice eye McCarthy! Way to get us started in the right direction batting with the bases loaded!

  99. vl4eccjr says:

Fantastic AB from McCarthy! He was hanging tough against those flames!

  100. crash24now says:

    He was safe!!!!

    Thanks Padres!

  101. vl4eccjr says:

    SAFE!!!

  102. crash24now says:

    Puig TOOTBLAN! Asshole!

  103. vl4eccjr says:

Puig still needs schooling on the base paths. 😦

  104. vl4eccjr says:

    WOW!!!

  105. crash24now says:

A-Gone again, baby, baby, baby, baby!

  106. colliethec says:

    Hello there my OTD family!!

  107. vl4eccjr says:

Well I sure am glad the shoe’s on the other foot on the fielding blunders tonight.

  108. nellyjune says:

    Agon is on fire!

  109. oldbrooklynfan says:

    WOW So far so good.

  110. The Beav says:

I see Mattingly’s ensuring Joc’s success by batting him 8th. Yeah, he’s going to see a lot of pitches to hit batting in front of the pitcher.

  111. trublu4ever says:

    Good job Brandon.

  112. trublu4ever says:

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DON’T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YO, ADRIAN!

  113. vl4eccjr says:

    HOLY CRAP!!!
    Adrian es en fuego!!!

  114. nellyjune says:

    WOW!

  115. The Beav says:

I’m going to make a guess and say that AGon leads the majors in HRs.

  116. oldbrooklynfan says:

    A_GON

  117. The Beav says:

10 more runs would be nice before Donnie blows through the bullpen again.

  118. colliethec says:

What a great moment in Dodger baseball!

  119. The Beav says:

When does the new guy get here? Uribe sucks.

  120. trublu4ever says:

Well, crap! Wish it could have lasted longer for Brandon!

  121. vl4eccjr says:

    Unraveling . . . .

  122. colliethec says:

After tonight and the last couple of days for Gonzo I think his off season boxing training will be coming to an infomercial soon!

  123. The Beav says:

Stick a fork in McCarthy. They’ll be luck to have any lead by the end of this inning.

Stick a fork in me too. Try to bring it on home guys, but with our bully, I won’t expect to see a W in the morning.

  124. vl4eccjr says:

Hope we see Baez next inning too.

  125. trublu4ever says:

I’ll take the base hit and RBI from Adrian.

  126. vl4eccjr says:

    WOW!
A-Gon is having a good week tonight!!

  127. colliethec says:

Not a dinger but just as effective!!!

  128. colliethec says:

Donnie left him in. I’m surprised!

  129. crash24now says:

A-Gone is the first MLB player EVER to get 5 HRs in his first three games of the season.

  130. vl4eccjr says:

I sure hope Puig breaks out soon. .

  131. trublu4ever says:

    Woo-Hoo!

  132. vl4eccjr says:

    WHEW!!
This closer by committee thing is going to make basket cases out of all of us. From his effectiveness & efficiency, I think Baez should be made the interim closer till Kenley gets back.

  133. oldbrooklynfan says:

A nice Victory. Adrian’s the man.

  134. nellyjune says:

    Way to go Dodgers!!

  135. crash24now says:

    We won the series!

  136. The Beav says:

Pads have pretty decent pitching. I would think some of the other guys will start to get it going against the Snakes.

  137. griz says:

First off, you’ve got to be amazed at Adrian. I hope he can keep this streak up for another couple of days so I can see some of this in AZ. I’ll be at Saturday’s game and Kershaw should be pitching, I finally get to see a game where the top part of the rotation will be out there.
    *
Looking back at the second inning last night, I don’t know why Rollins didn’t make it to third on that second error either. And I don’t know why Puig doesn’t pay attention to what’s going on around him. Between innings ESPN’s commentators pointed out how many times he got thrown out on the bases last year (led the majors) and how he was supposed to be more alert this season. The camera was on Puig during this and he was goofing around in the dugout not paying any attention to the game. After he was thrown out, he seemed to think it was funny. So it makes me wonder. Will this guy ever get it? Is it good enough to just get by on his natural gifts?
