Working in the Coal Mine

With the Dodgers and the Giants playing second division rivals Padres and Diamondbacks, the focus this weekend needs to be on getting the job done.  The Giants aren’t likely to lose many games to the D-Backs.  Therefore, the Dodgers need to get the job done and beat the Padres as many times as possible.

Just don’t do anything stupid.  If that seems easy, you haven’t spent much time around the Dodgers.  Do you want to know why Vinny talks so much about the importance of the catcher blocking low pitches?  Probably because Mickey Owen let strike three and the 1941 World Series slip right on by him.  http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/15/sports/baseball/15OWEN.html

Keep Paul Maholm and Chris Perez out of the game unless we are losing by 5+ runs late in the game.  Take Hanley out of the game if we’re leading by 2+ runs in the eighth inning.  Catch routine fly balls with two hands.  Hit the cutoff man.  Don’t bunt on the first pitch with Dee Gordon on first base.

If we do this right, we’ll be no worse than four games out on Sunday night.

Friday Night Lineup – Turner is Back!

    Gordon 2B
    Ramirez SS
    Puig RF
    Gonzalez 1B
    Kemp LF
    Ethier CF
    Turner 3B
    Ellis C
    Haren P

Glad to see Turner back in the lineup. Hopefully his bat will be there as well. It will be interesting to see how the Dodgers play after the day off. I hope they took the bubble machine with them to San Diego and if so, it gets plenty of use.

Even though Rojas pulled off an impressive defensive gem to save Kershaw’s no-hitter, Turner has the better bat.

      Go Dodgers!

  4. trublu4ever says:

    GO DODGERS!

  5. Well, you can call a team, “second division” whatever but I’m a great believer that any major league team regardless of it’s standings could beat any other team on any given day.
Just because we’re playing the Padres doesn’t mean we’re going to win.
    But I hope we do.

  6. Nice quick good start.

  7. trublu4ever says:

I have a feeling we will need lots of runs tonight.

  8. enchantedbeaver says:

We’ll take ’em any way we can get ’em.

  9. Another merry-go-round for our Dodgers for 3 runs.

  10. Looks like Seth Smith has Haren’s number.

  11. trublu4ever says:

    Damn, Haren, don’t blow now!

  12. enchantedbeaver says:

    Snakes did their job 4-1.

  13. crash24now says:

Why do I feel like Seth Smith only hits homers against the Dodgers?

Great to see another Dee Gordon Little League HR (also known as triple plus error).

I hope The Beard can hold it together tonight.

  14. enchantedbeaver says:

Hope we get the lights out Kenley tonight. Weeble Kenley’s not too fun.

  15. crash24now says:

Another drink for each and every base runner that Kenley allows onto the basepaths.

  16. trublu4ever says:

    WTF….I’m going to be drunk!

  17. crash24now says:

Two drinks for a third-deck foul ball that would have lost it for the Dodgers.

  18. crash24now says:

A six pack for allowing the game to be tied up.

  19. enchantedbeaver says:

    Pathetic.

  20. trublu4ever says:

How many for a f**king loss!

  21. It’s been a while since Jansen blew a save until now.

  22. Leave it to the Padres to stop us.

  23. crash24now says:

When I said that I expected to still be four games out, I didn’t think it would be ugly like this.

Jansen didn’t just blow the save. He just served up the hits. That’s all.

  24. lbirken says:

Wow, that loss is a reality check after the high from Wednesday’s game and a lost opportunity to pick up another game on the Giants. Oh well, have to give credit to the opposition and move on from here to tomorrow.

  25. Blown saves happen to the best of them. We’ll get ’em tomorrow and Sunday.

  26. grizzy says:

    Again the bullpen.

  27. JhallWally says:

Bummer!!! But these things happens. Kenley has been gettting the job done. Now Maholm and Perez are another story….

At least the G’nats lost and we didn’t lose ground… Just need to keep winning series and everything will work out in the wash….

  28. oldbrooklynfan says:

Actually the Dodgers did lose ground on the calendar as far as trailing the Giants, they now have one less game to play. We just have to hope that things work out differently tonight and more in our favor.

  29. Nice going Dee and Hanley.

  30. Hanley makes it 3-0.

  31. trublu4ever says:

I was hoping we’d have more than 3 runs. This isn’t a very good pitcher for them …. we should have rocked him hard!

  32. Hanley, Puig and A-Gon all have 44 RBI.

  33. The tieing run is at the plate.

  34. Here we go again, Dodgers leading by two runs.
Would be good if we can manage to score some runs.

  35. It’s up to Jansen.

  36. As Vinny said, “GOT’EM”

  37. trublu4ever says:

    Much better!

  38. At least we keep pace with the gnats.

  39. crash24now says:

What did I say about pitching Maholm? He is strictly to be used as a mop up man.

  40. grizzy says:

Jansen’s save was encouraging but I don’t understand why Maholm was used in that spot. I suppose you’d have to use him some point, though crashs post pretty much sums up his role on the team. League looked like he was going to be effective for a minute, but he seems to be back to his old self. Does anyone know what is going on with Paco lately?

  41. messagebear says:

Who the hell is Romak, and why is he up here in the first place?
Why is Maholm still up here for that matter?

  42. Nail biter, but a win nonetheless 🙂

  43. I miss the game today. I went to see Tanaka lose at Yankee Stadium, an annual trip I make with my daughter Claudine.

  44. nedisajerk says:

I can’t believe USA gave up a late goal like that.

  45. grizzy says:

I can’t believe the fellow that hit it in was allowed to get behind all the defenders. Get between them and the goal. They obviously have never played American football.

  46. Well here go with the DH. It should be something that works in Mattingly’s favor when it comes to making out the lineup.

  47. Dodger4life says:

I have some baby-back ribs on the grill…some Hornito’s in the freezer…a blender and mix…Play Ball.
