Dodgers: Team of Brotherly Love?

Coming off what was possibly the worst played game in years, the Dodger multimillionaires with their apathetic “It is what it is.” attitude, strolled into Philly with all the lassitude of that dance made famous in 1958 by American Bandstand right there in that city.

The stink of this team goes all the way to the top, where the Guggenheim Group slept, while Derrick Hall hired the “take no bullshit” Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa to take charge of a struggling Diamondbacks.

It is unimaginable to me that men at the highest level of baseball are so clueless at knowing and executing the fundamentals of the game. Al Campanis, long time Dodger minor league manager, scout, and General Manager, literally wrote the book on fundamentals, “The Dodger Way to Play Baseball”, in 1954. In it, Campanis writes:
“TEAM MANAGEMENT
There are five qualities that distinguish the good manager or coach. These are:
1. The ability to control his players or team.
2. The ability to stimulate his players to give their best at all times.
3. The ability to teach baseball fundamentals.
4. Knowledge of the game and strategy.
5. And courage … to carry out his convictions or impulses.

CONTROL OF TEAM
A manager who can not control his team soon loses their respect and the players become openly defiant. This is evidenced by the deliberate missing of signs, and the breaking of curfew and training rules. The manager who allows his team
to get away from him is well on his way to a losing season. If you are by nature an easy going type, you must then be a good ‘actor’. Be a bit stern at times just to let the team know that YOU are running the club.”

Are you listening Stan Kasten? If you want to continue your winning legacy, you better get guys in there that can get the job done and not be afraid to hurt the feelings of multi-multi-multi-millionaires like “I’m not a platoon player.” Matt Kemp. Mattingly needs the cashews to tell Kemp that the MANAGER decides who plays, and who sits. The way Kemp has been screwing up defensively lately, tells me that he has regressed into his five tool, but no brain way of playing of a few years ago, or that his ankle is much worse than he wants to admit. If the latter is true, he might be on the cusp of entering the realm of other Dodger superstars like Tommy Davis and Bobby Valentine, whose careers were ruined by ankle injuries. At least in their cases, they damaged their ankles by going hard after a ball, not because their head was up their ass strolling from third to home, then being surprised by a throw to the catcher, and lunging wildly at the plate. So because of his thoughtless way of playing, he lost his “explosiveness” when starting to run, changing himself from being a gold glove center fielder, to a well below average one.

The picture of Citizens Bank Park shows “Ashburn Alley”, the concourse behind the brick Batter’s Eye, named in honor of HOF Philly center fielder Richie Ashburn.

Unless I missed something, I thought that La Russa went to the Diamondbacks, but otherwise I certainly agree with perceived attitude problems of the Dodgers. Too much money and too many (undeserved) long term contracts can do that for you, especially when administered by a couple of incompetents like Ned and Donnie, and I certainly add Kasten to that scenario.

You’re right. Thanks for the heads up. I am still working on the post and wanted to get something up in case somebody else decided to fill the gap.

  2. lbirken says:

I used to have a copy of Campanis’ book. The Dodgers have not been the same since he was dismissed for His unfortunate comments on Dateline all those years ago.

    • 32and53fan says:

Al did not have “the necessities” to be a Dodger spokesman on national TV.
And Peter O’Malley did not have the courage to resist the public pressure and back Campanis, who was dead tired during the interview and not able to explain his comments properly.

  3. trublu4ever says:

    Interesting, no Matt…no Hanley.

  4. Let’s hope we can win another series.
    Go DODGERS!!!!!!

  5. trublu4ever says:

I hope Kid K can go the distance.

  6. 32and53fan says:

Not much is said, or at least I haven’t heard, about the role of book learning and testing of baseball knowledge at the major league level. It seems that, with all the sloppy play lately, the Dodgers should have a standardized written test to assess the knowledge of their players. It shouldn’t be too much to ask guys making $500,000 and up… WAY up, to sit down for a couple of hours to take a baseball knowledge test.
Then, any deficiencies could be identified by the coaches and corrected.
I’m sorry, but I have no tolerance for major league players making mental errors.

    • enchantedbeaver says:

Trouble is, they’re making the same mistakes that they have for years, the kinds of mistakes that should’ve been corrected and mastered in little league though high school.

  7. trublu4ever says:

    Great job, Kersh!

  8. I really like that inning Kershaw just pitched.

  9. enchantedbeaver says:

Really potent line-up we’ve got with Figgins. Ellis and No Bueno.

  10. enchantedbeaver says:

    Shocking.

No one really thought we were going to score there did they?

  11. And faith shakes it’s ugly head again.

  12. enchantedbeaver says:

There’s the Brandon League we’ve all grown to detest.

To think all winter long I was really looking forward to this season. Frankly I’m shocked this team is anywhere near .500 let alone a game over. They stink.

  13. enchantedbeaver says:

    Wow. Some real relief pitching.

  14. mesagebear says:

Actually I think the Phils have a lineup even more crappy than we do, and that takes some doing.

  15. enchantedbeaver says:

Nice inning from Wilson. Hope he’s starting to turn the corner.

  16. enchantedbeaver says:

One would think that with Crawford being a hot hitter that you would bat him second in hopes that maybe there’d actually be someone on for Puig. But obviously Figgins was the better choice. That’s why Donnie gets paid the big bucks.

  17. grizzy says:

Good to see zeroes next to Howell, Wilson and Jansen’s name in the box score. Hopefully that was a hiccup for League and he’ll go back to keeping the ball down and get outs.

  18. oldbrooklynfan says:

It was a little disappointing to see League having an outing like that but luckily Howell saved us with his exceptionally good hold to keep the Phillies scoreless.

  19. Dodger4life says:

Same outfield as yesterday…Hanley returns as the shortstop today.

    Gordon 2B
    Puig RF
    Ramirez SS
    Gonzalez 1B
    Crawford LF
    Ethier CF
    Turner 3B
    Ellis C
    Haren P

    • Dodger4life says:

I’m wondering if Haren can keep the ball in the field of play today? I have no clue how to find his stats in this category?

      • trublu4ever says:

        I like the lineup.

        • Dodger4life says:

          I thought you might, tru.

I seen that Haren’s ERA in Philly is above 6.00. I’m always hopeful that this is the game they come alive and shake the lollygagging style that has hampered them so far to date?

          • trublu4ever says:

Maybe Haren will surprise us …. or, we can score more than 6 runs 🙂

          • Dodger4life says:

I stumbled upon some Rally Beers yesterday… If they can score 12 runs, I figure to be somewhat intoxicated. In any event, I’m hoping I don’t find the need to burn through my newly acquired Bullpen Brandy. I’m hopeful the latter will be used correctly.

          • Dodger4life says:

Even money say’s, I’ll be asleep long before any of the above happens though 🙂

          • trublu4ever says:

            2 runs down!

  20. Well here we go. I hope we can stretch this to 2 consecutive games .

  21. 32and53fan says:

Hanley is out with left calf soreness.
    Arruebarrena at short.

  22. Utley makes it a bad start. After Ellis’ error.

  23. Dodger4life says:

Hershiser is using Haren and hope in is commentary today. The wind seems to favoring anything hit in the air to right field.

  24. The Phillies are having no trouble hitting Haren.

  25. Very nice pickoff by Ellis.

  26. So far Haren seems very hittable.

  27. No luck trying to hit Buchanan yet.

  28. Dodger4life says:

    Rally Time!

  29. Has Haren settled down?

  30. Atta way Crawford.

  31. Good Goin’ Gordon -cuts the lead in half.

  32. The errors continue to hurt.

  33. Dodger4life says:

    Rally Beers!

  34. Got the run back.

  35. Dodger4life says:

We’ll take em’ anyway we can get em’…

  36. trublu4ever says:

Haren settled down the last few innings …. to bad he threw the 1st and 2nd.

  37. Dodger4life says:

    Rally Beers!!
    &
    A sip for the bullpen!

  38. Haren settled down after the second inning by keeping his pitch down. I hope it wasn’t too late.

  39. Dodger4life says:

Come on Rally Beer, don’t fail us now!

  40. Unless something good happens..
We’ll all be rooting for the Twins tonight.

  41. At least one more chance.

  42. Well, so much for that.

  43. mesagebear says:

    Just SUCKING along!

I find that I don’t really care anymore about SUCKING.
I hate the Guggenheims; I hate Magic, and I hate Kasten; and I guess everyone knows how I feel about Ned and Donnie Boy.

On this road trip I figure that we’ve essentially played three last place teams, and we’re 4-4, and we’ve had Greinke, Kersh, and Ryu pitching in five of the eight games.

    So, just keep SUCKING along.

    • It was probably time for those teams to do a little winning after losing so many games.

    • JhallWally says:

The Dyson people should advertise with the Dodgers…. Both can claim “No loss of suction.”
I don’t know about the Dysons, but, it is sure true right now for the Dodgers…. I sure would like to see them start getting it together soon and play some good baseball.

  44. JhallWally says:

Chalk up another loss to our lousy defense…

    Unacceptable!!!!!!!!!!

  45. trublu4ever says:

No Matt, Hanley or AJ today.

  46. oldbrooklynfan says:

I hope we can get in the win column today.

  47. kahliforni says:

I get a feeling the Dodgers’ clubhouse is smoldering; I know I am. My disdain for the manager increases daily. Other than a few individual players, what’s to like about this current version of the Dodger franchise? I agree with bear.

  48. I’ll be away from my computer and will not be back before this game ends.

  49. ZonaDodger says:

    Wow….Beautiful game Beckett..Just wow

  50. mesagebear says:

    NO NO!!!

  51. That was an amazing game! A no hitter! A complete game!! And there were no errors! Even a bit of timely hitting was in evidence. Game Day was not quite so celebratory, but did a good job of reporting the facts.

  52. lbirken says:

Wow, this game came out of nowhere. But I too am concerned about whether or not this team can or will focus on the job at hand. There always seems to be some distraction. Hopefully a great performance such as today’s game will help.

  53. enchantedbeaver says:

Wow! Last guy I’d ever have thought would fire a no-hitter. Glad they actually got him a run.

    • JhallWally says:

Yep Beav, I didn’t see this one coming. Terrific game by Beckett. Nice to see the offense and defense show up.

  54. Just got back, what a pleasant surprise.

  55. kahliforni says:

Took off on my bike after the 7th…had to bring my transistor. Awesome!

  56. crash24now says:

Five chances to centerfield and three chances at shortstop. Makes me wonder if Becket would have a no-no had Kemp and Hanley been playing.

  57. enchantedbeaver says:

Just watched the 27 outs… there looked to be only a couple balls hit well. Very impressive.

That Ari kid looks really slick at short. If this team had an offense I’d leave him there the rest of the year.

Hell, I’d leave him there the rest of the year anyway. Adios Hanley. Give him a matching offer so we get a draft pick and let him walk.

Don’t faint Tru, but I’m liking Dre in center a lot more than Kemp too.
