I still can’t believe that Ken Gurnick didn’t vote for Gregg Madux because he played during the “steroid era”. I was very suprised. I truly can’t see why any player should have to suffer because of that.

Was watching ESPN earlier this morning and found it quite interesting how they were measuring starting pitchers using Clayton Kershaw as the template they were measuring against. They were measuring not only ability but leadership skills as well. Pretty cool, huh?

Listened to a hack on sports radio this morning saying Puig ought to bat 6th or 7th. Discounting the energy he brings to any line-up (wasted when near the end of a batting order), I looked up on-base percentage, as in Moneyball. Name of the game is for a player to get on base so he can touch home plate and a score a run, right? So who do you think finished 1-2-3 for the Dodgers in OBP last year? In order, Hanley…Yasiel…Andre. And who do you suppose led team in walks? Andre. So can we please quiet all the “trade Ethier” banter? By the way, Puig finished second to Gonzalez in runs scored (scoring only three fewer), but with 200 fewer ABs. Ah, stats!

You got me on that one. But you can bet that I remember who hit the game-winning RBI, scored the winning run, and who scored the tying run.
I know one thing we won. I looked up to see who the winning pitcher was but I don’t know if that’s fair. I made a scrap book of Dodger post season games.

It also made me think about enchanted’s thought… that he hopes Dee Gordon pans out this season…
I was also reminded of how messagebear is a big Van Slyke supporter.
One of the 4 outfielders will no doubt occupy one spot… If all remain healthy.
I realize injuries can make the circumstances play out any which way… So, assuming we get to Opening Day with a healthy front 11 counting the backup catcher and extra outfielder…
I suppose there is also the possibility of having an extra arm in the pen or since the 5th starter won’t be needed until mid April one less…
So, for the sake of conversation about the Dodgers, quickly approaching 2014 season…
Who are your odds on favorite’s to be the Dodgers bench players on Opening Day?
I am interested to hear how you would prefer this situation to play itself out given the group Ned has put forth as of today… (feel free to count the newly acquired Cuban kid in as well).
I’m also unsure if Van Slyke, who is the only viable option at first in the event Agon is unavailable (other than Uribe whom is fragile himself)… can be sent to the minors without clearing waivers again (which I doubt would happen)? Turner is another option and I suppose the phantom DL thing could prolong a guy’s longevity too? In the back of my head, I see Dodgereric pulling for Bill Buckner to come out of retirement… he can still hit can’t he???
It looks like, to me, we have a good assortment of second baseman and a good group of guys that could close on days that Jansen doesn’t. Both these situations seem very inrteresting to me.
Such is true obf, I’m just waiting out the rain today and started running scenarios through my mind. I do realize that Spring Training should reveal the eventual outcome… but, thought it would be fun to speak about how we would like to see it play out…

I don’t see where Rosin fits except in the bag.

6. Beckett (if he’s got the nerve)

9. Seth Rosin ?
10. Fife
11. Magill – I’m only happy if he comes after the top ten.
As a Rule 5 pick, Rosin will likely be jettisoned rather than kept on the 25 man roster.
I’d agree he is a longshot…
Donnie boy likes five position players on the bench. I would like those to be the best possible options for (a) covering our butts should someone go down – yes, it will happen, (b) pinch-hitting, and (c) help us defensively.
That being said, without yet seeing any Spring Training results, and assuming (big assumption) that Guerrero wins the starting 2nd base job:
1. Fedex as backup catcher (there just aren’t many choices)
2. The fourth all-star! outfielder
3. Dee Gordon – with added muscle, can now get as many outfield hits as infield hits
4. Scott Van Slyke – power off the bench, plus can cover 1st base
5. Arruebuerreuna – who wins out over Rojas, just due to the massive length of his name.
I’ll say this much… crash was the first one to spell Arruebuerreuna correctly… Good job crash! This guy needs a nickname by the way.
well, almost…actually it’s Arruebarruena. Next, I’ve got to figure out how to say it.

Barring injury… Jamey Wright and his $1.8MM contract will be in there somewhere.
He probably will take the Withrow or Dominguez spot until they are deemed by Ned to be “ready” (aka out of options). Unfortunately, League will likely take the other bullpen using the same illogic.
Maybe Ned will ship League off to someone who needs bullpen help and pick up an old Hank Williams and Johnny Cash Cd in return??? I mean asking for vinyl would probably be a deal killer…
I just have to believe the Dodgers will do SOMETHING during Spring Training to improve the bench. How can they spend zillions on everyday players and then saddle the team with a bunch of C+ utility players? I thought Kasten and the Guggenheim capitalists wanted to win a championship? Bases loaded…bottom of the 9th…and now pinch-hitting….Gordon? Van Slyke? No Name?

How about Stephen Drew? He’s a free agent, plays ss, aged 30, career OBP of .329, and hit 13 taters last year.
I was looking at
JimThome, Billy Butler (29)… He has a team option in 15, can play 1st base, has played LF although is mainly a designated hitter who has a career OBP of .364, hit 15 taters last year and could probably be acquired for cost controlled pitching help. Something we have.I definitely like his nickname – Country Breakfast.
Yeah, me too… I was just looking through free agents in 2015 and found him. His stats and Van Slyke’s stats from last season look to me at least, to be somewhat similar… Although, “Country Breakfast” has been smashin’ the taters for the past 7 seasons. But, he is a defensive liability… and a whole lot more money than Van Slyke.

I managed to get my baseball fix in today… Listening to the Oregon State game against Nebraska.
During which time I started thinking that the utility spot might be Turners to lose, due to his bat. I’m not sure, but I think Gordon has one option left, not to say they wouldn’t keep them both?
I also took a peak at Van Slyke’s stats and in limited time (156 PA) the guy had some success banging 7 balls over the outfield wall with 8 doubles. This was a big turn around from the previous season. With a hypothetical (600 PA) it would put him on track to smack 28 over the wall. His batting average was .240 which doesn’t exactly give you the utmost confidence in his ability to come through in a pinch though.

These guys all have big league contracts, so barring an injury/trade/DFA/restricted list… there isn’t much room left.
I also thought about the type of spring Figgins needs to have… in order to make the team on Opening Day. I’m guessing it’d have to rival Puigmania… If he shows that he has some potential left, and agrees, he might parlay some time in AAA, into a later call up?
They have an assortment of what appears to be solid gloves in youngsters (which might not bode too well for Sellers and his 40 man spot?) such as Rojas and Arruebarruena, albeit, they haven’t shown much offensively. Arruebarruena in my opinion will get sent somewhere to get better instruction. Leaving Rojas as the first available glove in the event of an injury to an infielder. And with the amount of money they have given Guerrero and the fact that Ellis was let go, I think he’d have to have a bad spring not to play 2nd.
Which makes me think … League… Gordon… and Van Slyke are under watchful eyes and thoughtful minds, maybe a little more so than others this spring.
Which also makes me believe, that as kahli and enchanted have stated previously… Cowboy Ned will somehow corral a rainy day mudder with no name, before too long.
Beckett if he has a good spring will be in the rotation… if not, I think he will decide on how to proceed. Which could open up a spot for some young arms in the pen,
based on match-ups, as well as performanceand Paco being a lefty.Man, I LOVE wasting time thinking about Our Beloved Dodgers…
