Hoping our winning team shows up for this series….I don’t want to fret about every game.
Horribly, the Reds series consisted of a two-run homer by Hanley, a solo homer by Hanley, an RBI double by Hanley, an RBI single by Hanley, and a two-run homer by Puig. The rest of the team can’t seem to drive in runs against big -time pitching.
And not sure I like Kershaw’s and Gonzales’ attitude about “better to lose now,” etc., etc. Sounds like their manager, the same guy who insists he puts a team on the field that gives the Dodgers the best chance to win a ball game (please see box score for Wednesday in Colorado). I said it in April and May, and said it when the Dodgers were 42-8. I don’t prefer DM as this team’s manager.
The number of people wanting his demise is growing more and more everyday.
Not sure what you would expect the players to say after a series like this. The starting pitching was good but not good enough and the relief pitching was also not good enough since the offense could not generate enough offense. I think the problem with what Kershaw and Agon said assumes that losses and wins come at “convenient” times and the odds should be in the Dodgers’ favor for wins now that they have suffered some losses. Obviously the players were trying to stay positive. They know what happened and they know why. And I doubt they think it has anything to do with Donnie but we will never know.
lbirk, I agree with you about players saying the “right” things to media, though I would have preferred words such as unacceptable and not-the-time-to-be-coasting kind of stuff. DM, on the other hand, frustrates me with his insistence on believing a sacrifice bunt is the end-all of aggressive play. I still wonder whether or not he embraces the squeeze, the hit-and-run…anything to get a stymied offense moving again. And if he doesn’t, look out playoffs, because he will come up short. For me, playoffs is about “little ball.” There is just too much good pitching to believe otherwise.
Mattingly’s lineups and other odd doings drive me buggy… However, he is a players manager and at the moment his team has the third highest winning % in all of baseball. And it’s a team which broke records in baseball history, getting to this point of the season. So, whether he is the guy everyone loves, or loves to disagree with? We could be in a lot worse shape.
I don’t like the players, whomever they are, publicly saying it is better to lose now, etc., etc. either. I understand if they win later, this may become true. But that is IF and there are NO IF’S in a pennant race, there are NO IF’S in the NLDS, there are NO IF’S in the NLCS and there are NO IF’S in the World Series.
Didn’t these guys say NO EXCUSE’S in spring training??
I expect them to just say, that they got their rear-ends whooped by the Reds, that they have to come out of the dug out each night, better prepared and win ballgames.

According to baseball-reference.com the numbers 0 – 67 have all been worn by players and or managers/coaches before, as well as the numbers 00 – 70 – 71 – 74 – 75 – 77 – 88 – 97 and 99. The numbers 85 and 86 are worn this season by the two bullpen catchers. Triple bonus points awarded, to anyone with enough team knowledge to name them without looking?

Reports are we’re close to signing another Cuban defector for $32M for 5-7 years. Infielder (ss), but they’ll probably convert him to 2B. only 5’11”, but supposed to be a power hitter.

Donnie Boy’s playing around with the lineup again. Seems like a week or two ago he was experimenting with changing up the 1-4 hitters depending on the left-right starting pitcher. Now he’s going with Puig leading off against a right-hander. On top of that, he’s violating his own L-R-L-R rule, using Ethier behind Gonzalez.
Hey, I don’t mind giving Puig and Hanley more at-bats, but when will this merry-go-round ever end?

What the hell exactly is Puig’s roll on the team? Is he a leadoff hitter? Is he an RBI guy? Maybe whoever can explain it to me can also explain it to Donnie because he doesn’t seem to know either.
How can anyone get comfortable and established in a roll on this team when there’s never any continuity in the line-ups?
Does anyone know what to do with Puig? He certainly is not a traditional lead off guy because he is such a free swinger. And for the same reason, he is not a traditional second guy either. He is an enigma on the base paths. What would you do with him?
I would go (1) Crawford, (2) Puig, (3) Hanley, and (4) Gonzalez. That way the first three run the basepaths as fast as they can, and Gonzalez nor Ethier get in their way.
When Crawford gets on ahead of Puig, try some hit-and-run plays with either a 0-0 count or a 1-0 count.
Make sure Puig doesn’t try to steal third base when Hanley is hitting.

I just don’t get how someone that’s spent their whole life playing, coaching and managing baseball can have such a difficult time with the concept. Drives me nuts he puts Agon ahead of Puig or Hanley to Clydesdale up the basepaths in front of them.

Well the Dodgers won’t get any help tonight keeping the D’backs away, they’re on their own. This could be a big series if either of these two teams sweep. The race could tighten up or the Dodgers could put their finishing touches on the regular season.
Puig should bat 1st. Start the game with the opposing pitcher on edge. If he wants to mess around with Puig, then he walks. What pitcher shivers when Crawford is approaching the plate? Like Ricky Henderson, a leadoff batter that can smack the ball out of the park is a very uncomfortable sight for the starting pitcher to begin a game. And Puig is 100 times more dangerous than Crawford with a bat in his hand.

Dale Mitchell made the last out (K) in Don Larsen’s World Series perfect game. Mitchell didn’t like the call and turn around and argued with the ump. It could be seen in the video, at one time, but it has since been taken out, at least it’s never shown.

I talked to Brian about getting more people to notice this blog, whether it was through Facebook or another avenue. He told me that he started this blog so that those of us who came to ITD would have a place to congregate. He also said that he doesn’t have the time to keep up with the day to day duties that a bigger more successful blog requires.
ITD wasn’t just linked to dodgers.com, it was linked to MLBlogs and until they changed the rules on us, was always a top producer.
biddyboo asked me to check out Facebook in 2008 and I did. Since then I have added many Dodger friends as well as a handful of old ITD participants. I can always ask them to come rejoin us again. Although I have left a couple of links on my page before.
I don’t mind changing the thread and trying to give us something to discuss. I have the time at the moment and until that changes, enjoy it as well.
kahli, it would be wonderful, if as promised, they would either attach this blog site or renew the old one. Although, I doubt that will ever happen. They added Jon Soo Hoo to the homepage and he has a Facebook account as well. He has many followers as you can imagine. Jon is a wonderful talent and is just as wonderful as an individual. (He has responded to messages sent before). His blog is always a pleasure to view, but yes, short on comments compared to the old ITD.
It wouldn’t be all that hard to find a troll or two thousand, if someone linked this page to Facebook… especially during the upcoming post season. Facebook trolls can make Philly look tame though.
When I started this blog, a few people were still hoping that Josh Rawitch would resume posting to ITD. I posted several times on ITD that, until that blog was resurrected, they were welcome to continue the game chats on OTD. A couple of folks mentioned that they thought it would be disloyal to the Dodgers to come and comment at OTD.
I did not want OTD to be part of MLBlogs because I did not want the limitations imposed by MLB Media. I don’t know if it was generic to all MLB blogs or just ITD, but if you remember remember, we could not even put new lines between paragraphs, and could not add stuff like YouTube to our comments.
I am pretty sure that most of us here are in our golden years, so I did not impose a list of commandments, like those on Jon Weisman’s Dodger Thoughts, preferring to go for free speech, even though the language did get a little salty during the period when the McCourts were still around. I am proud that everybody here has refrained from flaming each other and kept the vicious barbs aimed at Dodger management, who know it is part of the gig to withstand some slings and arrows.
Above all, I wanted OTD to be open to everyone, not just to comment, but to also create new posts, if the spirit moves you. Tru has done a great job and unleashed her creative side with the great graphics she includes with each post along with a snappy headline. Many of you have also taken the mantle and created many thoughtful posts. Dodger4life has been especially active lately in this regard.
I’m sorry that I have not been that active lately during the game chats. I usually watch the games on time delay so that I can blow past commercials with a couple of button pushes on my remote. I do read every comment, though it is often after the game has ended.
As far as getting an official link on the Dodgers Web site, I don’t see that happening. Even some really great sites with original content, like True Blue LA, aren’t afforded a link there. I have added links on OTD on Facebook and Twitter from time to time but it is not done automatically. If all of us re-tweet or share such links, we may be able to attract a few more regulars here. I know that Steve Lyons, Kevin Kennedy and Jon Soo Hoo have seen this blog without commenting on anything.
This has been a a fun ride. I hope it lasts until November.
On this 12th anniversary of 9-11, let us pause a moment and reflect on this national tragedy and honor the over 3000 that were lost on that fateful day.

The Dodgers have released the 2014 schedule.
The AL teams that will be visiting before the All -Star break are the Tigers for 2 games, then we travel to Detroit for two, the Indians invade the Ravine for three and the after the break we have 2 at home against the Angels and then the following two days, we go to wherever it is the Angels play. It also appears that the Dodgers will open the season in Australia, against Arizona, on March 22/23rd.
Once again my source was Tony Jackson @ dodgerscribe.com, who is working hard to bring us fresh news on his new blog site. Which will have a pay-wall next season. So far, I am not against paying Tony to bring me a new look inside team, and it’s surroundings.

Like shad, I wondered why no one else, has come around to this site. My conclusion is what kahli brought up. A) We were linked to the Dodgers through Josh. B) There hasn’t been as much friendly and fun/funny discussion about everything in general, like we had in the past. People like CP and Collie, who came to talk Dodgers but also came to chat with friends for a brief moment or two. I will say also that missing North, Dodger Eric, as well as Nelly, puts a dent in our shiny Armour. As I explained before Eric is very good at getting a good flow started. North is a talented writer, and Nelly was always willing to chat and listen with whomever. And when was the last time Nedco Records released a song in our presence???
I do hope to see some of the old gang back here during the playoffs though. I know I will invite the ones I can.

I have a few health issues I am working on at the moment and have been stuck here at the house. So I have a lot of time on my hands. I enjoy changing the thread and usually do so around noon on the day of a new series. I am in no way trying to take over this site, and do not want to become overbearing, in any way. However, if the thread hasn’t been changed by noon the day of a new series. I probably have something ready.
I just try and find stuff for everyone to read, I am not a big stat guy, I have no clue as to what some of them even mean.
If I see something that I think others will enjoy, I post it. I don’t watch much TV these days. Unless the Dodgers are on, or one of two shows I enjoy.
I read, cook and listen to music in my spare (oh who are we kidding) time, these days.
So I hope no one has been offended by all my comments or feels like I am overstepping my bounds. If so just say something, I’ll understand.
Dodger4life, people come and go, they get busy or worse, I doubt they ever disown the Dodgers. I appreciate the people here that comment and respect their point of view. I have visited the chatter at the other site, and it can get pretty stupid, and not in a fun way. To all of you who post new threads and do the work, thank you.. I too have looked at the comments in other places and for the most part, it looks like it is difficult to have a decent conversation.
You know what it is for the most part on those other sites birk – nobody wants to allow someone to have their own opinion. That and there’s absolutely no respect given. Try having a rational conversation, especially if your views are against the team and about all you get are obscenities.
That’s why ITD/OTD has always been so great. We respect each others views even if they’re different from our own, and I think everyone on here also acknowledges the fact that we’re all Dodger fans no matter what side they take.

I am. In my 20+ years there it has been my toughest 7 months ever. All I have been doing is working or trying to sleep – I often get called at night for work issues as well. Hopefully this project will end on time in June 2014 and I’ll get back to somewhat of a normal schedule.

Dre has been solid this year. Both in the field and plate. Nice catch by Puig. Glad he didn’t crash into the wall running full sprit for a fly ball. Love his hustle but some of his plays have been a bit dumb.
That’s going to make the playoffs interesting. He’s not going to have time to learn everything he needs to learn before then. And the Dodgers can’t afford to not play him.
I think Adrian, Juan and Hanley are trying to show him the way.
I just hope he doesn’t do something that costs us big. So far his mistakes have been bearable. The playoffs tend to magnify those mistakes.
Volquez wasn’t that bad.
I agree — he was decent. He and Cappy are both guys that can be awesome or horrible. Sort of like that box of chocolates Forrest Gump’s Mom is always talking about.

I agree with Collie. Withrow is a fine set-up man. 3-4 pitch repertoire and quite a variant in speed from the heater to the curve. Really surprising he couldn’t make it as a starter.

Totally uninspired effort last night.
This is what concerns me with Donnie – he thinks he can turn momentum and intensity on and off like a light switch. It doesn’t work that way. You either play to win or you don’t, and you can get a team into some really bad habits by lollygagging around.

To make it even worse, in my opinion…Donnie also wanted to sit Hanley & Adrian but they told him NO….wanted to play until we had clinched. Mattingly is an idiot!
Fred McGriff was at DS a couple of days ago and said that he never wanted to sit during September. Mattingly is trying to balance out guys getting playing time with rest that the regulars may or may not need. On Dodger talk last night, it was mentioned that Hanley looked like he was nursing some minor injury.

Say what you want about Dodger management/ownership about what happens on the field but the Dodgers continue to give the fans a first class experience with the Friday night fireworks shows and such. Last night’s pregame program recognizing 9-11 was first class and top notch all the way while still being respectful and mindful that we were all there to watch a baseball game. The Dodgers honored first responders by having many of these folks on the field, including fire fighters from New York, a great bag pipe team, the unfurling of a special 9-11 flag (flown in by Guggenheim Group) and a wonderful rendition of the National Anthem by a member of the Marines. The topper was a flyover from a number of helicopters from various agencies such as LAFD, LAPD, LA County Sheriffs and others. It was quite inspiring and very well done.
