Pirate Series Chat

So far, the bats are cold and the glow from the opening game victory has started to dim. But one series does not a season make. There is much more talent on the team this year than just about any Dodger team since the Garvey, Lopes, Russell, Cey, Baker and Reggie Smith era.
They will be fine.

Welcome back Russell Martin. He hasn’t done that great since leaving L.A. but he was always a fan favorite.

These Pirates are not the Clemente, Stargell, Barry Bonds Pirates, but they are getting better.

  2. trublu4ever says:

    We will be fine.

  3. Martin did fairly well for the Yankees but not good enough to keep paying him as they plan to get their payroll down to 189 million by next year.
I agree it’s early yet for the Dodgers but I hope they don’t go into these RISP slumps too often.

  4. crash24now says:

I’m looking forward to Greinke’s first start for the Dodgers tonight. This game will get us out of the funk. Kemp will likely break out of his mini-slump against Sanchez.

  5. I fully expect this team to be right around .500 or a couple games above through May before they take off. Not because they won’t have Hanley until then, but this team never has had an opportunity to gel as a unit. It’d be nice to have a fast start, but as we saw last year, that doesn’t really mean anything. What they need is to finish strong, and I think they will.

  6. lbirken says:

I certainly hope the Dodgers can deal with the pressure placed upon them by the media, fans and even themselves. I realize every team goes into Spring training believing this will be the year but we all saw what happened to the Angels last season.

  7. trublu4ever says:

Pitch a great game ZG….and, please let the boys hit the ball and drive in lots of runs. GO DODGERS!

  8. vl4eccjr says:

    Good evening all!
    Matt’s funk continues. . .

  9. vl4eccjr says:

    WTG DRE!!!

  10. trublu4ever says:

    #16….Yay love my Dre!

  11. nellyjune says:

Can’t hit lefties – HA!!! Way to go ANDRE EVERETT ETHIER!!!

  12. trublu4ever says:

    Nice play Justin!

  13. vl4eccjr says:

    Matt’s funk is over!

  14. trublu4ever says:

  15. vl4eccjr says:

    Yo Adrian!

  16. trublu4ever says:

    Paco can do this.

  17. trublu4ever says:

    Woo-Hoo….nice throw AJ!

  18. trublu4ever says:

Bull Pen is awesome so far.

  19. trublu4ever says:

    Good job boys!

  20. vl4eccjr says:

    Solid start from Grienke
+ good relief out of the pen
    = A WIN!!
    A successful formula!
    Hasta Manana folks!

  21. JhallWally says:

WooHoo, win streak!!! Very nice performance….

  22. grizzy says:

The pitchers have been good, even great at times, but the offense will have to kick it in gear to reach the 95 wins I hope for. Much to early to make any kind of assessment, but I think the bats will crankit up before long.

  23. grizzy says:

I should really proof these things before I post, but I was called to breakfast. So it always comes down to pitching, which we’ve got. I believe enchanted is correct about the team getting a chance to play as a unit. It may take a bit but before long I think they will start to score and rack up some wins.

  24. Dodger4life says:

We hit .190 as a unit last night, the good news is Greinke only gave up 2 hits to the Bucs, and our 3 runs on 7 hits was good enough to get the win ( we played solid defense). I agree with the assessment from enchanted that more emphasis should be put on finishing strong than a quick start. This still does not make me feel any better about the series with the Giants.
A win is a win, and we now have two of them…
I hope y’all have a good Saturday and the team continues to improve…

  25. Dodger4life says:

    I just read this….
I agree with the comment that the coaching staff, as well as the base runner should know the count and if there is a discrepancy, the home plate ump should have been consorted. ( I am certain there was an 8 year old in the stands who knew the correct count.)
This is lackadaisical baseball…which is what concerns me at this point.
The two costly errors by Sellers with the costly error by Schumaker, factored in with Crawford and company not knowing the pitch count, Cruz not being ready for a bunt situation and getting caught of guard…doesn’t exactly instill confidence that this ship is being steered straight, even after four games.
I am also glad to see Kemp broke out of his slump with a double last night. I think this is just the thing he needs to get things going. Cruz on the other hand isn’t quite the hitter Kemp is. How long can you have patience with him. He earned the right based on last season to man the position especially with what the other choices are at the moment…( like I said earlier I am not a big fan of platooning players )
Harang in the bullpen when it has been stated that he needs 30 minutes to warm up…doesn’t make a whole lot of sense either does it? Something has to give here soon I would think.
In my opinion this just leaves more doubt as to the club being fully ready to play baseball.
I am also curious to why enchanted thinks Gordon should get the start at short over Sellers…As much as I like Gordon and what he can do on the base paths…I like Sellers odds at playing the defensive side of that spot correctly better. ( just wondering enchanted as I value your input? )
I am not trying to be negative these days…I am just tired of giving players the benefit of doubt…The season has started…They should have their mind on the game, they should be ready to play, everyone should be confident in their position with the team…yadda, yadda, yadda…

    • Hey D4!

Mainly would prefer Gordon playing because he brings more to the table and has a lot more updside than Sellers. I’m even OK with Uribe playing over Sellers if that tells you anything. Gordon’s low BA is better than no BA, plus Gordon appears to be learning how to take a walk – think he had 10 in ST. Cruz is playing down to my expectations of a career minor leaguer, and we just can’t afford to have an entire left side of the infield that can’t produce. That and as we saw the other night, Seller’s D isn’t as good as everyone thinks.

      • Dodger4life says:

Thanks E…Ned made another trade, I don’t get it? Mattingly stated that Fed Ex had nothing more to gain by playing in AAA earlier this spring. I know that we haven’t heard what this deal cost us in terms of money….just that Colorado gets salary relief…How much did Ned pay for a 37 year old back up catcher that hit .216 last season, whom really wasn’t needed???

        • Dodger4life says:

Colorado will receive Aaron Harang and $4.25MM in the deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (Twitter links). The veteran was one of the club’s surplus starters and was less-than-thrilled about having to come out of the bullpen to start the season.

          • Dodger4life says:

            I hate this GM stuff!!!

          • Dodger4life says:

Now I am reading that Ned saved the Dodgers $2MM and added some pop to the bench ( which is heresy), also that Colorado will save money as well, even if they find no one to take Harang. Colorado does have the advantage of trading Harang based on a $2.5 MM salary vs the Dodgers trying to trade him with a $9MM salary.

  26. Dodger4life says:

Not sure what this means…but we’ve traded for a catcher?

  27. ZonaDodger says:

hmmm..Glad Harang is gone but wtf….Hernandez? I guess FedEx is going down to AAA

  28. grizzy says:

Wtf is right. Looks like getting rid of excess baggage to me.

  29. Dodger4life says:

    Dylan Hernandez just tweeted…
#Dodgers wanted to add an extra catcher, in case something happens to A.J. Ellis or Tim Federowicz.

  30. trublu4ever says:

Lineup tonight i pretty much the same…just switch Cruz & Dre.

  31. trublu4ever says:

Giants lost…now, let’s take advantage boys!

  32. messagebear says:

Not that there was any need to keep Harang, but that trade doesn’t make any sense to me at all. Can somebody explain the logic to me, or should we just accept it as another Ned deal?

  33. Hi Everybody
Just thought I’d check in here for tonight’s game.

  34. trublu4ever says:

So glad you are here tonight.

  35. A lot of players going from 2nd to 3rd on ground balls to SS.
    Usually they’re out. ???

  36. trublu4ever says:

    Damn….blew a good opportunity.

  37. Maybe Clayton can clout another one. (ha)

  38. I think if Crawford stays healthy he’ll steal an awful lot of bases.

  39. trublu4ever says:

The first run of many I hope.

  40. The Dodger run was a groundhog run.
2 out and nobody on when Crawford singled.

  41. trublu4ever says:

Once again…too many runners in scoring position.

  42. 32and53fan says:

Another great game by Kershaw… so far.

  43. Matt is way over due.

  44. nellyjune says:

So mich for breaking out of a slump! 3 Ks is not good Matthew!

  45. Another RISP, will we leave him?.

  46. Make it 2 for 8, tonight..

  47. Can we all agree now that Cruz IS NOT a major league anything and was simply a flash in the pan?

  48. Can we also agree that Sellers doesn’t belong in the majors either?

  49. vl4eccjr says:

  50. 10AB 2 hits with RISP tonight, so far.

  51. Another great performance by Kershaw.
    I hope he wins.

  52. Maybe This Time………

  53. vl4eccjr says:

    No juice!

  54. trublu4ever says:

So, I’m hearing Billz is coming back on Wednesday….who goes?

  55. Another sparkling job by Paco and Kenley.
Man if this team could only score.

  56. vl4eccjr says:

So much for some insurance runs. . .

  57. trublu4ever says:

As Vinny just said: “Another dead soldier in scoring position”!

  58. trublu4ever says:

  59. vl4eccjr says:

    Chalk up another ‘W!’

  60. What a typical Dodger game.
    I ask.
How far can a team go on pitching alone?
    Good Night.

  61. nellyjune says:

    Win streak!

  62. Kershaw must be feeling like Koufax – gotta pitch a shutout to get a win. Well, heck, if the Giants can do it on pitching, so can we!

  63. JhallWally says:

WooHoo, win streak!!!! Way to go Kersh!!!

  64. JhallWally says:

Nedcompoop is an idiot… Harang for a washed up backup catcher. And we are paying over half his(Harang) salary… Geez!!

    Why is he still here??????????

The man is a baseball moron……..

  65. grizzy says:

I do not get it either. A serviceable starter for a back up catcher and still pay half of his wages? Is that all that was out there? Perhaps so. I don’t get as down on Ned, but I do not get this one. Should have traded for a new bat rack.

  66. trublu4ever says:

WTF: Here is why I won’t go to a Sunday game:

  67. messagebear says:

If you’re Ryu you’ve got to be complaining that you could have a better supporting lineup down in ABQ (or back in Korea).

  68. Right now any Dodger lineup will do. The regular one doesn’t seem to be able to score lately, anyway.

  69. grizzy says:

    oldbrooklyn has got a point.

  70. lbirken says:

Yes, if the Giants can win with pitching, why can’t the Dodgers but clearly much more was expected from this roster. Hopefully it will come and it has to start with Kemp.

As I recall, the more complaining about the Sunday lineups voiced on these pages the better the team fared. Keep complaining.

  71. trublu4ever says:

    Kaboom…..down 2 already!

  72. trublu4ever says:

    Way to go boys….tied!

  73. lbirken says:

What? Two runners in scoring position and the Dodgers cashed them in? And Kemp hit a double to right? Good news.

  74. trublu4ever says:

    Wow….first hit for Tattoo…dinger!

  75. crash24now says:

He really tatttooed that one (reaching for it, I know).

  76. vl4eccjr says:

    WTG Tattoo!!

  77. trublu4ever says:

    Way to go Adrian!

  78. crash24now says:

Shredder and AGon are both having themselves a helluva offensive game!

  79. trublu4ever says:

I’m loving our bullpen….thank goodness our starters are going deep enough to use the good guys!

  80. vl4eccjr says:

  81. trublu4ever says:

Another win…way to go. Now on to San Diego……see the boys Tuesday to continue the winning streak.

  82. Dodger4life says:

Well we swept the Pirates at home, this is a positive…It’s time to hit the road and the baseball…Off to San Diego, then Arizona we go, Bills should be added to the roster on Wed, which would give us a 5 man rotation and if the order stays as is… would mean we would see Beckett pitch twice during this road stand, as he would finish the series against the D-Backs…Then again there is the Lily factor and trying to predict what happens here is beyond me…It sure would be cool if the Boy’s came alive on offense and instilled some Dodger Pride into the N.L. West…
Anyhow 4-2 is where we stand today…and yes I am still peeved that we didn’t take the opening series against…well I don’t even want to say to whom, that just makes my blood boil…mainly because I know we can do better!!
On a brighter note…I believe we will, that is half the battle ain’t it?

  83. JhallWally says:

I see that Uribe was once again useless…. Once again, why are Ned and Uribe still with this team…. Geez!!!!!!!!!!

Kudos to Ryu for getting it done with a sub standard lineup……

I’m with Tru, who would pay to see that lineup…..

  84. Unless they come up with something on or before the trade deadline, third base is going to be a black hole all season unless they put Hanley back there where he belongs. Cruz is what he is – a carrer minor league journeyman. Uribe’s, well… Punto is nothing more than a fill in, and Hairston is over the hill and nearing the valley below.

  85. It was good to see that the Dodger bats showed some life yesterday.

  86. kahliforni says:

RIP Annette Funicello…you and the Mouseketeers were a huge part of my little tot years, though I always had a crush on Darlene!
