Championship Series Chat

…and then there were four.

The Dodgers have been rivals with both teams battling it out for the National League pennant.  For that reason, a lot of here for rooting for the Reds and Nats.  But baseball is a funny game.  Just when you are jubilant because your team is up by two in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs, the opponent snatches victory from the jaws of defeat.

Both the Giants and Cardinals showed True Grit by the way they grinded their way back from a probable loss and elimination.  The team with the best record in the majors, the Washington Nationals, were snuffed out by the team that won 10 games fewer than Nats, the Cardinals, who barely made the playoffs by winning the number two wild card spot.

In the American League, the teams that were favored to win back in Spring Training, the Tigers and Yankees, did not disappoint the prognosticators.

May the best teams win.

I hope that best team is not the Giants so Go Cards! Beat SF!

The record between the Cards & Gints Is 3-3

  2. 32and53fan says:

Wow! You are fast Emma. I just finish posting and put a comment there to let people know there is a new thread, but you beat me to it.
BTW, you have been doing great work on your blog. 🙂

  3. lbirken says:

Wow, so many close games and dramatic finishes.

    • 32and53fan says:

That’s why Baseball is the greatest game. There is no running out the clock. It ain’t over ’til it’s over. All 27 outs count. There are probably some ten year old Washington fans who feel like their guts were ripped out. Just like I felt when I was ten and the Giants came from behind to beat the Dodgers in 1962.

  4. trublu4ever says:

Needless to say, I am rooting for the Cardinals. I’d love to see the Tigers also….with the Tigers winning it all!

  5. messagebear says:

I can’t find real rooting interest for any of the remaining contenders. As much as most of the bloggers on this forum hate both the Giants and the Cards, you have to admit that these teams have really had the CLUTCH quality these past couple of years – something the Dodgers have been sadly lacking probably since 1988. It also points out to me that Bochy is a quality manager, and that acquiring Scutaro and Pence beat Ramirez and the flying Hawaiian all to pieces. If you add the big acquisitions since mid-year, you’d have to give Dodgers the edge on both teams ON PAPER. All this talk about how the team will really gell for next year may also be so much “malarkey”. We just may have acquired the single biggest group of overpaid has-beens that money can buy.

Hope not, but it won’t surprise me. Having Ned and Donnie on board is a good start to mediocrity.

  6. ZonaDodger says:

The Dodgers are expected to hire Rudy Jaramillo as their hitting coach.
The hiring isn’t official yet, but Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune reports that Jaramillo is “in line” to take over for the recently-fired Dave Hansen. Jaramillo was the highest paid hitting coach last season and let go by the Cubs in June. The rest of the Dodgers’ coaching staff has been retained.

  7. grizzy says:

I’m not so sure the Cards won as much as the Capitols gave it back.
    *
Anyone seen anything on Billz? He was supposed to start throwing a couple of weeks ago and I’ve not seen anything since.

  8. messagebear says:

Hiring a hitting coach who was fired by the Cubs sounds like a real enhancement NOT!

    • 32and53fan says:

Theo Epstein said he was fired because the new management (him) had a slight difference of what to emphasize. He wanted a new person to go along with the team’s “new voice.”

Here is what some players had to say about Jaramillo:

Michael Young 2006 Batting Champ & All Star MVP … 2nd player under Rudy who has won MVP (Alfonso Soriano, 2004) … Ranger record-216 hits … 70 multi-hit games … .483 slugging %age … 3 consecutive 200+ hit seasons … holds 2005 “American League Batting Title” … “Any success I’ve had in the Big Leagues can be attributed directly to Rudy. He’s the best there is.”

Alex Rodriguez 2003 MVP … 7-time All Star & Silver Slugger Award … avg. 127 hits, 132 RBI’s, 52 home runs & .615 slugging %age … broke 2002 record and led A.L. with 57 home runs … “Rudy is a Hall of Fame hitting coach!”

      Kevin Mench ranked 2nd among hitters (2004) … .539 slugging %age … 122 hits, 26 home runs, 71 RBI’s … has a 35-40 home-run & 100 RBI season potential … “Without a doubt, Rudy is the best in baseball.”

      Hank Blalock 2-time All Star (2003, 2004) … Hit game-winning run in ’03 All Star Game … 2004 – 173 hits, 32 home runs, 110 RBI’s & .500 slugging %age … hit game-winning home run in his 1st All Star Game … “When I struggle, Rudy can get me back on track.”

Laynce Nix baseball rising star … in 1st full season, .437 slugging %age … 14 home runs, 46 RBI’s .. has potential of 35-40 home run & 100 RBI seasons … “Rudy has helped me to become a hitter and to get the most from myself.”

Mark Teixeira 2004 Silver Slugger … 38 home runs, 153 hits, 112 RBI’s & .560 slugging %age … second Ranger and 6th switch hitter in A.L. history to hit for the cycle with 2 hits from each side … 7 RBI’s in contest was the most since 1985 …

“Rudy is the best. I can’t imagine a season without him!”

  9. In the case of the Giants and the Cards I’m hopping the worst team wins and I’ll definitely will be rooting for the A.L. team in the World Series no matter which of those two teams win.

  10. trublu4ever says:

Wow! Makes me feel pretty good about our closer 😉

  11. That’s the Yankees for you.

  12. Well the Tigers are up 1.

  13. trublu4ever says:

    Jeter…fractured l…out for three months.

  14. Another good game at Yankee Stadium.

  15. The Yankee offense is letting them down.
    We can understand that, Eh?

  16. This is going to be SOME series.

  17. The Mets must be definitely sorry they let Beltran go.
He was probably just as glad to leave.

  18. trublu4ever says:

Damn..they’re letting them right back in this!

  19. Cruds from the second wild card?

  20. That’s just one game, I feel like there’s a long way to go.

  21. trublu4ever says:

Hoping after tonight the gnats will be down two!

  22. I hate the Giants as much as anyone but I think they’re going to be hard to beat.

  23. Pagan, another guy who must be eating the Mets hearts out.

  24. The Cruds have to put their hitting shoes on now.

  25. Beltran keeps belting them.

  26. Vogelsong has been the story thus far.

  27. Let’s see how the Gnats bullpen is tonight.

  28. trublu4ever says:

I don’t think the Card will pull this one out.

  29. trublu4ever says:

Boy…ump blew another one! something has to be done about these piss-poor umpires!!!!

  30. That was a very good catch by Jay, he ran a long way and the ump missed the call at first.

  31. trublu4ever says:

…..and, the Cards are playing crappy defense to boot!

  32. 32and53fan says:

Looks like they go to St. Louis all tied up.
AGon was on TV and predicted that the Cards and Tigers will meet in the World Series.

  33. I’m not surprised that Giants won this second game. I kind of expected it. The series probably will favor the Cards, going to St. Louis but these teams seem pretty evenly matched.

  34. nellyjune says:

Good Afternoon Dodger Fans! I’ve been off in Charlotte, NC enjoying a great week of NASCAR. The good thing about that (besides a great race and fan events) is I didn’t have to watch a single Giants game. Just heard/read the score at the end. At this point, it’s the Tigers and that’s it for me. Good Lord! It’s going to be a nightmare if the gnats win this thing. I will have to have their poster up in my classroom until next October. I keep the NL and AL Champs up until the new champs are crowned. Yikes!!

    • You remind me of when the Gnats won the ’51 playoffs. My 8th grade teacher made one of my very ardant Dodger fan classmates place a gigantic scoreboard of the game, on top and across the clothes closet and stated, “There stands the greatest finish in baseball history”.
They lost the World Series though.

  35. grizzy says:

nelly, maybe you should consider moving.

  36. Watching Tigers/Yanks.

  37. Line drive HR. for Young.

  38. A good move to take out Verlander, he was having trouble throwing it passed the hitters.

  39. trublu4ever says:

    Whew…finally! One more Tigers!

  40. Close but no cigar for the Yanks.

  41. nedisajerk says:

Maybe ARod should’ve started tonight despite being 3/23 in the playoff.

    Career vs Verlander 24 8 1 0 3 7 4 3 0 0 .333 .448 .750 1.198

  42. 3-1 Cards…rainining.

  43. ALCS game called off to be played tomorrow.

  44. Getting ready in St. Lou.

  45. trublu4ever says:

    YAY!!!!!

  46. More big games coming up.

  47. I hope this series doesn’t end too soon. The Tigers might get rusty for the World Series.

  48. This is unbelievable.

  49. I’m surprised the Yankees kept their bullpen so quiet so long.

  50. I feel like a jinx for the Yankees, I hardly watch them and now I’m seeing their offense at it’s worse.

  51. The 7 are up around here 7 o’clock, 7th innning and 7-1 score.

  52. These Tigers better stay in baseball shape because I think it’ll be a long wait for the WS.

  53. trublu4ever says:

Very well done Tigers….now, on to watch the Cards pound Lincescum and the Gnats!

  54. Now for the big game.

  55. Incecum is lacking something.

  56. Looks like the cruds are trying to make quick meat of the gnats.

  57. trublu4ever says:

    Chubby made a flubby…lol

  58. One thing Lincecum is not lacking tonight, so far and that is “Luck”

  59. trublu4ever says:

    Damn that Pagan!

  60. trublu4ever says:

Yes….they are lighting Timmy up right now!

  61. oldbrooklynfan says:

The Cards are building the lead.

  62. trublu4ever says:

Three more outs…come on Cards, lets get this game over!

  63. oldbrooklynfan says:

Will this series return to SF?

  64. I understand we don’t have to watch tonight because the cruds have all ready won. The game is in the bag.
    Play Ball.

  65. trublu4ever says:

Looks like we are headed back to Frisco for Sunday’s game.

  66. And it seems I’m living with a closet gnat fan . . . . bah!

  67. You called that right.

  68. grizzy says:

Conventional wisdom and the sports pundits had the Cards beating the crap out of Zito to such an extent I found myself hoping he would do well. I kept waiting for him to get lit up, but he kept the Cards off balance. Great performance, but too bad it helped the giants get back to Frisco.

  69. I’m glad to see the NLCS extented a little more, so we can have some baseball while we await the World Series. I kind of expected a close series with both teams playing at their best. What confuses me is that I am anti both teams because of their good postseason records. It’s hard for me to favor one team over the other. I do know you folks on the west coast have been harassed enough lately by the Giant fans and as a fellow Dodger fan, I wouldn’t want that to get any worse.

    • nellyjune says:

I have a strong dislike for both teams, but it is pretty impressive how the Cards are one of those teams that the experts kind of wrote off because they were losing LaRussa and Pujols. Plus, the injuries to Wainright and Carpenter during the season made it even more unlikely that they would win. So, even though I am not a Cardinals fan, it is still better than living through another year of orange and black hell. The bandwagon fans, like vultures, are already out hovering ready to drop in at the moment they see a suffering Dodger fan, like they know more about what is going on than we do.

  70. Now It’s getting late for the Cruds, tonight.

  71. trublu4ever says:

I hate to say this, being the baseball fan that I am, but, I tuned out after the gnats scored 5 runs……can’t take it!

  72. Well, one more game left in this series and I for one will be glad it’s over.

  73. nellyjune says:

UUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Man!! These games really suck!!! There! I feel better now 🙂

  74. Well this is it the game we’ve been waiting for.

  75. I just hope the Cards make it a game and not get steamrolled.

  76. trublu4ever says:

    Crap…here they go again!

  77. Holding the gnats to one run has a different ring to it.

  78. 32and53fan says:

I want the Cardinals to win but the Giants now have the momentum. The fans might give the Giants the edge they need.

  79. I think not scoring in that inning doesn’t bold well for the Cards,

  80. Blah! The debate is about to start – see ya all later!

  81. The Cards are toast. Dancing with the Stars – on deck.

  82. Well at least I know who I’m rooting for in the World Series.

  83. nellyjune says:

This just royally sucks!! Go Tigers!!

  84. kahliforni says:

Deal with it, gang. The Gnats earned it. Ugh……. Two World Series in the last three years. Double ugh……

    • nellyjune says:

Yes they did Kahli, but it’s still a very hard pill to swallow, especially, like you said, twice in 3 years. I’m happy for Marco Scutaro. After being traded from the A’s, he was being bounced around from team to team. GO TIGERS!!

  85. nedisajerk says:

Dang why couldn’t Berkman and Furcal be healthy? Pujols was surely miss and the Cards did have Punto on there team to. Beltran is just a curse on any teams that he played for and never made it to the WS and he still won’t go.

  86. koufax1963 says:

Its all been said, Im listening to the blues, LA’s Doors, next year fans! Its really hard to walk the streets.

  87. grizzy says:

    Sucks.

  88. messagebear says:

The team that won obviously has character and that fire in the belly – something that the Dodgers are sorely lacking, regardless of who owns them. I for one will root for the Giants to win the Series.

  89. grizzy says:

You can be sent to Hell for things like that.

  90. messagebear says:

I’ve already been in hell for the last twenty some years waiting for my team to win something significant.

    • nellyjune says:

LOL!! Want to know something? Last March, while in Las Vegas for a race, I placed $10 on a variety of teams/drivers to win their respective titles. Two of those teams just happen to be the Tigers and the Giants (which I did for my hubby). I should be rooting for the Giants because I would win more money, but gotta go with the local boy (Fister) and the Tigers. I even think our local Giants fans would have a hard time cheering against Doug in game 2. No matter who wins, I will just be glad when this season is over, and get ready to move into the Hot Stove season. I need a countdown to spring training because until then I am stuck with a Giants poster on my wall – ugh!

  91. I wavered back and forth in who I wanted to see lose. I had difficulty rooting for the Cardinals who have already won 11 World Championships, the most by any National League team. I know it will be difficult to swallow the Giants winning the World Series for the seventh time, one more than the Dodgers ( I count them all) but there’s still a chance that the Tigers can stop that from happening.
Let’s hope regardless of what happens, the Dodgers new ownership can get the team started on winning more often and being more successful in the postseason.
    GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  92. grizzy says:

bear- that was tongue-in-cheek. couldn’t help but try to have some fun with this.
