The Reinjury of Matt Kemp

Having Matt Kemp return to the Dodgers after a great two day rehab assignment in Albuquerque was great news.  Having him aggravate his hamstring on Wednesday night was not so great.

Steve Lyons was talking about hamstring injuries on the Dodgers Live post game broadcast.  He said that it is common to bring back a player slowly after returning from a hammy DL stint by resting the player after the first game back.  When Don Mattingly brought up the possibility of Kemp sitting out a game, Kemp responded with a resounding “No way!”

I am beginning to wonder if Donny has the cashews to deal with prima donna players.  He was reluctant to sit Kemp while he had his consecutive game streak going.  If he thought Kemp should rest but got talked out of it by the player, it does not bode well for his leadership.

I don’t know if I am the only one bothered by this, but I thought it was not smart to let Kemp be such a boisterous cheerleader while he was in the middle of his DL stint.  Seeing him rush onto the field after a walkoff win and tackle someone with his “winning hurts” hijinks looked like an accident, or re-aggravated hammy waiting to happen.  With so many players getting injured from freak accidents like pushing their car like Dick Allen did in 1967, or pulling on a pair of cowboy boots like Wade Boggs, I keep waiting for something bad to happen each time Kemp, Andre Ethier and Dee Gordon jump up in the air to bump their bodies together after a victory.  I know the boyz gots to have their fun, but when one of them sprains an ankle, it won’t be very funny.

After the first three game losing streak of the year, lets hope that the Brewers have left their brooms in Milwaukee.

If Kemp hurt his knee by breaking his bat over it, I am really going to be pissed. I know some players are really high strung but they are also valuable properties of their teams and should find a safer way of expressing their frustration. Who can forget Kevin Brown breaking two bones in his non-pitching hand by punching a clubhouse wall during his time with the Yankees in 2004?

  2. trublu4ever says:

I’ve questioned Donnie’s leadership since he took over. Not the brightest crayon in the box. I am also hoping Matty takes the proper time before making a comeback. We cannot leave all the hitting up to Dre and A.J. ….. and, our pitching of late has been less than stellar. They say all teams go through a slump…I just hope this is ours and, we will bounce back.

    • JhallWally says:

Hi’Ya Tru… I hope they bounce back also. But, this team had major holes when the season started. And now they are starting to show. You can only keep it together so long with coat hangers and duct tape. Let’s hope the new ownership and management are now realizing what a terrible job of building the team Ned Fecolletti has done. This team needs a major overhaul starting with Nedcompoop and Stan Conte. I’d like to see them show Honeybutt the door also. And, I wouldn’t be heartbroken if Dildon was let go.

  3. JhallWally says:

Uuuuuuugh!!! What a rough week for our Dodgers.

On the bright side, it has been a rough week for McCockroach too.
A grand jury has opened an investigation of his business dealings. I hope it gets alot rougher.

Anyway, I am in the process of moving, so, I won’t have internet access for awhile. I hope it isn’t too long and I can get connected again next week. In the mean time, keep fighting the good fight my friends. Catch you all later…..

  4. trublu4ever says:

I’m now hearing Matty will be out the entire month of June.

  5. messagebear says:

He probably should have stayed out a whole month to begin with.
You could blame the early coming back on Conte, but Matt, with due respect for his power and all, doesn’t seem to me the brightest nor the most disciplined guy in the dugout, and Donnie has no control as a manager.

  6. crash24now says:

Matt Kemp is back on the DL. Alex Castellanos has been called up to fill out the 25 man roster.

  7. kahliforni says:

Was reading a bit this morning about our heroes, Frank and Jamie. Even though Jamie seems to have “sold low” in her divorce settlement, she astutely made sure Frank is SOLE OWNER of Dodgers and subjected to all IRS penalties for non-payment of taxes. However they are BOTH liable for any fraudulent activities and subsequent penalties…you know, like absconding with team funds, etc.

As for Kemp, hamstrings are nasty. They take forever to heal. The understudies will have to continue to step up. As for Loney, wow, he’s either a huge, enormous, gigantic waste, or yet another vastly over-rated Dodger “youngster” who’s getting older by the second.

  8. messagebear says:

I’m glad to see Costellanos up. Maybe a prospect originally selected by the Cards will prove more major league worthy than some we’ve had lately. Besides, I believe that prior to this season in the minors he was playing the outfield; so, added to the 2nd base he has been playing this year, we should have some more flexibility.

    • oldbrooklynfan says:

I hate to knock our scouting but it seems to me also that the position players the Dodgers have on the farm that came out of other organizations seemed to be more majoe league ready.

  9. grizzy says:

Great. We better hope like hell Ethier doesn’t go down or we are screwed.

  10. lbirken says:

Kemp’s re-injury is most unfortunate but let’s stop second guessing the situation. In fact, the boys on Dodger Live last night following the game kept saying they did not want to second guess and then spent the first segment doing just that. No one knows for sure what is going to happen and each player is different. Remember J.D. Drew? He missed games for the most inane reasons. Kemp is a gamer and that is only one of the reasons we like him so much. Did he come back to soon? It is easy to say so now.

And can we stop blaming everything on Stan Conte? How come no one says anything about the current trainer? From what I read the players (including Kemp) seem to like her although I suppose we would never know if they didn’t. Injuries are part of the game. They cannot be predicted and teams have to find ways to overcome them. Chick Hern used to say the Lakers are an ankle sprain away from disaster. Let’s hope the Dodgers are not a hamstring away from disaster.

Where is that guy that was during all the home attendance from last year I forgot? I don’t even remember a home attendance this low even worst that they stay at home watching the SC final other than a meanless regular season game with Kershaw pitching. I wonder if the Brewers announces did the same thing probably with our attendance but probably not with Bob Uecker.

    • It was DodgerEric who was keeping and publishing the attendance statistics last year, Shad. He doesn’t post here very often, but when he does, it’s well worth the read 🙂

    • nellyjune says:

The only reason Dodgereric was posting the attendance last season was because of the boycotting issues. He lifted his personal boycott of Dodger Stadium once Frank was heading out the door.
      .
Sparkleplenty – always worth reading what he has to say. We keep telling him he could make some extra money doing it.

Sometimes I wonder how much truth there is to the SI Jinx but I agree Maybe Kemp should’ve been brought along much slower. “Maybe” is a big word here. “Who knows for sure?
Tonight’s a big night, I’d hate to see the “Kempless Dodgers” go on the road riding a 4 game losing streak.
June is going to be a real test for this team with more games on the road.
    Well only time will tell.

  14. nedisajerk says:

They need to bring up Miles and release Kennedy. Is ok to have b2b lefty with Abreu and Ethier but why not have Hairston and VanSlyke? I’m all in letting the rookies start over Loney.

  15. nedisajerk says:

Gomez I can’t believe this guy was like 7/31 vs the Dodgers 6/36 on the road and he goes 4/5 with 2 rbi’s last night and his last rbi was Apr 24. Gomez was 3/19 since coming off the DL and he goes 2/2 with 2 rbis off of Kershaw last night.

  18. vl4eccjr says:

Not a good start. . . I sure hope Bills gets his shit in one bag!

  19. vl4eccjr says:

    Sheeeeit!!

  20. vl4eccjr says:

Kennedy continues to peg the old suck-o-meter. . .

  21. trublu4ever says:

The last 4 games have been very difficult to watch. With Matty out at least a month, you wonder if the “new owners” will make some moves….I’d use Billz & Loney as trade bait……I think the pitching right now is worse than the hitting….always having to come from behind is not an easy task every day.

  22. koufax1963 says:

Pathetic! I get the game, finally, and vinny’s feed, and pft abreu hits in to DP, can I watch anymore, I don’t know perhaps jose and I will talk it over, one more shot, and its not like bills pitched that bad, except that slider for the HR, it just the whole dynamic of an inning, whether its the pitching or hitting, donnie has a big job ahead of him

  23. vl4eccjr says:

    Nice job Elbert!

  24. trublu4ever says:

    Woo-Hoo….rally time!

  28. vl4eccjr says:

    Pathetic!
Getting swept in a four game series to an inferior team. . .at home!!! Two runs on thirteen hits is just unacceptable!!
I sure hope they can break out of this funk on this upcoming road trip. It’s going to be a long one.

  29. 32and53fan says:

    Too little, too late.
    Four game sweep… epic fail.

  30. oldbrooklynfan says:

Like old times tonight all that hitting and that’s all. 2 for 11 with RISP
2 runs on 13 hits. Played more like 2007.
The Brewers didn’t forget their brooms.
Well now it’s “Hit the road jack”.

Look like some fans are still boycott the team.

  32. grizzy says:

Doesn’t look good right now, but these guys have shown they can hang in there. As oldbrooklyn has already pointed out, this will be a big month. The standings will be very interesting come allstar break. I expect some moves. I also agree with trublu. Maybe it’s time for Billz and Loney to find a new home. No panic, but the roster needs some help. I just about deleted that last sentence, it’s so obvious.

  33. enchantedbeaver says:

Hi all. Nice 13 hit, 2 run attack.

For some reason I’ve just totally lost interest in this team. Judging from the attendance numbers above, so have a lot of other people.

No Kemp. Kersh isn’t pitching nearly as good as he did last year. Billz can’t pitch at all. Loney sucks. They’ll be playing the Angels now that they’re actually playing ball…

This team will be lucky if it isn’t at .500 by the end of June.

  34. messagebear says:

Yeah, E! And what’s the new ownership going to do about it?
Same as the old ownership with Ned doing it. The fans apparently have that figured out too. That’s why they’re so enthused and rushing for the seats.

  35. kahliforni says:

In fellowship, yet contrast, to enchanted and bear…I shall bear up and channel all positive vibes about this team. I will be the anode or the diode or whatever ode is needed. That said, there is nothing in this universe that can change the vibe surrounding Billingsley and Loney. I get the feeling both would flourish in a small market with no post-season expectations. They just seem to lack that “whatever-you-want-to-call-it.” I used to play softball with a real leader…he was our shortstop. When things got sticky he’d always shout, “step up or get out of the way.” Unfortunately, Billingsley and Loney have been getting out of the way for quite a few seasons now.

  36. grizzy says:

    That’s right. Hang tough.

  38. lbirken says:

What a difference a 4 game losing streak can make! Yes, the Dodgers are struggling and the injury bug may indeed be too much to overcome. There still is a lot of baseball to be played so it might be a bit early to give up on this team. Remember, most of us had modest expectations for this team when the season began.

    • trublu4ever says:

I will never give up on my team…..angry, yes, at times….only because I hate losing.

By the way, mlb network has been talking about Youk either coming to us or the White Sox….good or bad?

  39. messagebear says:

I would never “give up” on the TEAM. As far as results go, I just want everyone to play hard and play up to expectations, and hopefully some will play beyond that. My contention the last couple of years has been with the guy who put the team together and the guy who gave the first guy the money to pay them with. BOTH SERIOUS FUCK-UPS. Only ONE is now GONE, and I’m no more sure about the quality of the new owner than I was depressed over the previous one.

As far as Youk is concerned, I don’t want to see him in Dodger Blue!

  40. oldbrooklynfan says:

I know most of you would disagree with me, judging from what I’ve read over the past few years, but I honestly feel if management is willing to spend, I think Ned could do a much better job than he’s done. That’s my own opinion and I respect any opinion that differs.

  41. oldbrooklynfan says:

Correction, I meant to say ownership, not management. Sorry about that.

  42. enchantedbeaver says:

I haven’t given up on the team, I’m just bored with them. Are we going young? Are we going old? Been asking that for 6 years now.

I’m tired of Donnie thinking he’s a LL manager having to play everyone, and also his inane in game decisions and line-ups (the apple didn’t fall far from that tree now did it?)

I’m also tired of Ned’s mantra – we’ll address what we need during the year. Why can’t he address what the team needs before they start the season? Guess what Ned? We needed a LFer, 3B, 2B and a decent starter or two during the off season. And what do we need now – a LFer, 3B, 2B and a decent starter or two. What did we need the year before?

SOSDD. Its driving me to spend time with the wife – THAT”S how bad it is.

    • trublu4ever says:

I have to agree with you on that…we are boring as hell right now…and, Donnie is rubbing me the wrong way, for sure.

  43. oldbrooklynfan says:

Damn another DP. They almost seem automatic lately.

  44. nedisajerk says:

Dang Cargo was 1/9 vs Capuano.

  45. nedisajerk says:

I’m all in for letting SVS playing but Loney rock in Coors Fields and I don’t care if it a lefty on the mound he should be playing.

  46. trublu4ever says:

    I hate Coors Field!

  47. trublu4ever says:

    Great….way to go Treanor!

  48. oldbrooklynfan says:

When things go wrong that’s how the go…

    • trublu4ever says:

However, OBF, we should have scored in the 1st inning…as you say, the double plays are killing us ….. and, that’s why we are on a losing streak.

  49. nedisajerk says:

I’m blaming this on that 1st error from DeJesus should be a 1 2 3 inning.

  50. nedisajerk says:

Can Santana pulled a Jackson with the Dback?

  51. oldbrooklynfan says:

Maybe we’ll finish off Outman this inning. Maybe…

  52. oldbrooklynfan says:

    Wow that was quick…ha ha

  53. oldbrooklynfan says:

    Nice going Castellanos.

  54. trublu4ever says:

    YAY…we got a run!

  55. oldbrooklynfan says:

Finally a Mets no hitter. I’m waiting for my phone to ring.

  56. oldbrooklynfan says:

My daughter Claudine, a die heart Mets fan, just called, as I predicted.

  57. nedisajerk says:

Would that be funny if the Padres throw a no hitter next week?

  58. oldbrooklynfan says:

    Let’s go Andre’

  59. nedisajerk says:

Stadium Citi Field, New York, NY

To bad it wasn’t a sellout.

  60. oldbrooklynfan says:

ATW Alex, two RBI nice going.

  61. vl4eccjr says:

    Poof!!!
    Thar she blows!!!

  62. Someone please remind me why Ned signed Treanor. He’s horrid!

  63. vl4eccjr says:

It’s like a Rocky track meet on the base paths with Treanor in there.

  64. I think Donnie’s lost his ever-loving mind with this double switch.

  65. vl4eccjr says:

    Good grief!
When is this big dark thunderhead cloud hanging over this team going to move on?

  66. oldbrooklynfan says:

    Thinks are looking bad tonight,

  67. oldbrooklynfan says:

Seems like a while since the last DP.

  68. 32and53fan says:

Hey OBF, this is the most you have posted during a game. What happened, did you get a new laptop or a tablet computer?

  69. trublu4ever says:

U-G-L-Y G-A-M-E!!!!!!!!!! We sure do look like the Bad News Bears tonight!

  70. This game has become one huge embarrassment for the Dodgers. They could have phoned this one in and not bothered to show up.

  71. oldbrooklynfan says:

It’s a good thing for the fast start this season, we’d really be in a hole.

  72. enchantedbeaver says:

    A real nailbiter I see.

Thank goodness we have Ned minding the store.

    He’ll know what to do.

  73. oldbrooklynfan says:

It was good to see no DP on Treanor’s RBI grounder.

  74. Batting practice any one??

  75. enchantedbeaver says:

So in one of the many deep discussions I’ve been having with the wife lately, we were trying to decide, when did they quit delivering milk to your door? I would think it would’ve been in the early 60s, maybe up to ’65, but I never remember them and she’s a little older than me and she doesn’t remember them either.

  76. oldbrooklynfan says:

    Finally that over.

  77. kahliforni says:

Nice to see everyone chiming in. I think we are ALL agreed that we love the Dodgers and hated to see things go crap the last few seasons. I think we almost ALL agree that Ned is a crummy cook. And I agree with enchanted…a team doesn’t need two months to assess needs. Losses in April, May, and June count! lastly, I think we ALL agree that while this Albuquerque collection gives 100% all then time the team needs proven major leaguers to hit the ball consistently. DECENT players in their prime, Ned, or should I say, hopefully, Stan.

  78. oldbrooklynfan says:

Time for the Dodgers to get back to the hotel and get some needed sleep and come right back here tomorrow. (and win)

  79. kahliforni says:

I’m saying 1966 on the milk delivery…I remember low-fat milk came in brown bottle, whole milk in clear…

  80. enchantedbeaver says:

Sad thing is, we haven’t started playing the good teams yet.

  81. grizzy says:

Every team has tough spot during the season and here is ours. While this is a patch work team, they are better than they showed last night. We’ll get some players back, and I expect management to acquire more. I don’t think they will get the crowds back by letting this good start go down the drain. They’ve got to know that.
Again, no panic, no moves just for their own sake. I’m not as down on Ned as the majority on here and don’t think he will try to just throw money at the problem areas. So again, it’ll be very interesting to see how things sit at the break.
