As you have already heard, the Dodgers today announced the signing of OF Bobby Abreu to a 1-yr contract & optioned infielder Justin Sellers to AAA Albuquerque.  Previously, Ronald Belisario was activated and should be ready to go today.  Mike McDougal was designated for assignment to make room.  Abreu commented:

“I’m just happy to be back right now,” Abreu said. “I’ll do anything I can do to help the team — as a pinch-hitter and whenever they give me time to play.  Of course I have to make an adjustment and get used to it,” Abreu said. “The good thing is we talked about it. I know what my role is here, and it’ll be no problem. I’ll always be ready. You see, as an everyday player, you don’t pay attention to that stuff. Right now, it’s OK. I’ll get used to it fine.”

Stan Kasten announced that Ned Colletti will not be subject to a specific payroll limit.  He wants the best available players to fit the needs of the team.  He added:

“I expect moving forward it’s going to be north of where it is now,” Kasten said. “But I have to tell you, I never focus on a target in getting the 25 guys. Because as you know, there are some teams that are really good with very low payrolls, and you would rather have those teams than a higher payroll team that’s not.

“So focus on the players that we get and don’t worry so much about the payroll. I don’t have a set number for you because we’re not going to do it that way. We’re going to take every opportunity that we can. If that means increasing payroll, then that’s what’s going to happen.”

It hurt to lose the series against an inferior (so far) Colorado Rockies.  It is not mandatory, but a sweep against the last place Cubs would be nice.  At least win the series.

    Go Dodgers!

  2. crash24now says:

Way to take one for the team, Mark!

  3. trublu4ever says:

Uh,oh….hope this is the only run Billz is going to allow!

  4. nedisajerk says:

Ouch Soriano was 3/21 with 10 k’s vs Bills go figure. I hate to see ground ball to 2nd with a runner on 1st and 1 out.

  5. trublu4ever says:

    Jerry! Jerry!

  6. enchantedbeaver says:

I see we’re really knocking the cover off the ball again today. We’re starting to play down to my expectations.

No Kemp. No Dre. No Runs.

  7. trublu4ever says:

    Billz is pissing me off!

  8. trublu4ever says:

    Ouch…that hurt!

  9. crash24now says:

Whatta we have to do to get to this guy Maholm? Dee already hit him….

  10. trublu4ever says:

Damn, Chad! You had 2 outs…and, decide to give them another dinger!

  11. trublu4ever says:

    Love Dre!

  12. trublu4ever says:

I’m sitting here on this lazy Friday afternoon and, for the most part, playing with myself…..and, I kind of like it 😉

  13. trublu4ever says:

    Jer-ry! Thanks!

  14. crash24now says:

    Jer-ry, Jer-ry, Jer-ry!

  15. crash24now says:

A walk to Ellis would bring up Abreu.

  16. vl4eccjr says:

    Good afternoon folks!
Looks like Hairston is a one man gang today. . .

  17. vl4eccjr says:

Shouldn’t expect much out of Abreu just yet. Rust never sleeps.

  18. vl4eccjr says:

Jeez! Elbert just stinks this year!

  19. trublu4ever says:

    Way to go, A.J.!

  20. crash24now says:

Elbert picking up where Billz left off.

  21. vl4eccjr says:

    Sheeeeit!

  22. crash24now says:

Might as well bring in Belly – or does he have to wait for the 8th?

  23. vl4eccjr says:

    Down to 13.5! 🙂

  24. enchantedbeaver says:

Despite our somewhat lofty record, Ned’s build himself yet a fine ballclub yet again. Team can’t hit. Bullpen can’t pitch. And the starters can’t go deep.

    Bravo Ned. Bravo.

    • vl4eccjr says:

Letting Kuroda go was dumb. He always ate up alot of innings.

    • JhallWally says:

Yep Beav, this team is not very good. We knew that going in. The fast start against really bad teams didn’t change that. They’ve got major holes and it was just a matter of time until they started to show.

    • kahliforni says:

I know patience is a virtue, especially in baseball, but waiting for Chump Billingsley and James Baloney to get it together is getting really old……

      • enchantedbeaver says:

Gotta agree with you there Kahli. Every year its the same thing.

And when you can’t score off the Rox at Coors and the Cubs at Wrigley, you’ve really got a bad hitting team.

  25. vl4eccjr says:

    Thanks Matt!

  26. vl4eccjr says:

    Thanks Dre!
    Keep chipping & grinding boys!

  27. crash24now says:

Gotta grind some more, all because of Coffey!

Now with a close score, can’t bring in Belly. If Lindblom can hold them down, Jer-ry can get the job done.

  28. vl4eccjr says:

CRAP! The best they can hope for now is a .500 road trip. . 😦

  29. vl4eccjr says:

Oh well! Might as well thank the Marlins for sweeping the G’nats. . .

  30. JhallWally says:

Elbert and Coffey give up the winning run and Billz still gets the loss. That’s just wrong…..

    • crash24now says:

Billz didn’t help himself much. But I also blame Ned’s offense, which is, well, just plain offensive!

  31. oldbrooklynfan says:

I think today was a well played game and a close one. Another 1 run game. I know it’s said we should beat the sub .500 teams but every day’s another game. Billz was so-so but we didn’t get enough offense off the Cubs pitching.
    Let’s get them tomorrow.

  32. crash24now says:

Ruh-roh – perhaps we have not seen the last of McDooDoo.

“Mattingly said the Dodgers would like to keep MacDougal if he isn’t claimed by another team.”

    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/dodgers-sign-bobby-abreu-172511247–mlb.html;_ylt=Agm1f.3yfObcdl.aGQpUuTkRvLYF

    • enchantedbeaver says:

McDooDoo must be like a comfortable old pair of sneakers to Donnie boy – worn out and stinky, but he just can’t throw them away.

  33. grizzy says:

Lots to think about. The team is starting to play to its true level, and it’s certainly true that if Kemp and Ethier don’t score, we don’t win. And I certainly agree it would be a good thing to acquire players that are not 5 yrs past their prime. What’s with this bullpen?
Guess it is OK to give Abreu a try out on the cheap, and how can we see if Uribe is going to come around if he’s constantly hurt?
    *
Only thing to do is be patient (something I’m not good at) and let the new owners settle in.

    • crash24now says:

Looking for a big bat between now and July 31st. To your point, it’s gotta be somebody still in their prime. Not saying it has to be David Wright, but it should be David Wright. Here’s hoping for the Mets to lose a lot of games in May, June and July.

  34. sparkleplenty1 says:

During the change of management party, it was said that whatever money Ned needs to get good ballplayers, he’ll get. To be honest, if I gave him a quarter to use a pay toilet, he’d probably come back with a used piece of chewing gum and not get to the bathroom at all!

    • enchantedbeaver says:

      Not that’s funny!

      And true!!

      • trublu4ever says:

You are so right! Ned wouldn’t know a quality ball player if he bit him in the ass! And, by the way, I’m hearing David Wright could be available.

  35. kahliforni says:

In a bizarre way, perhaps some of the marginal talent is beginning to press, knowing full well that new ownership is watching and the wheels are turning…Elbert, Coffey, Kennedy, Loney, Uribe, Rivera…their collective upsides are still face down in the pan…

  36. koufax1963 says:

Everybody gets up to knock off the first place team, we played tough at coors, these 1 run late inning games. It was disappointing to see kershaw not get the win. Im just waiting for the giants!!! K vs lincecum again!

  37. koufax1963 says:

OK does abreu count as the first player bought with the new ownership?

    • enchantedbeaver says:

      Yes.

      • messagebear says:

Would that indicate that the new ownership will be as devoted to other teams’ leftovers as the previous one?
Is it not ironic that the Guggenheims now have a losing record for the season after McCourt’s owned team had such a fantastic start to 2012?

  38. trublu4ever says:

I’m watching the Dbacks/Mets game and, if you thought our BP sucked, the Mets’ makes ours look super! Come to think of it, most teams have lousy relief pitchers. I figure, for the most part, ours just has to be a little better for a given day.

    • trublu4ever says:

While I am venting, I’d like to say that the group of umpires this season are, by far, the worst I have seen in quite a while.

  39. JhallWally says:

    Todays lineup:

    Dee Gordon, SS
    Mark Ellis, 2B
    Matt Kemp, CF
    Andre Ethier, RF
    Bobby Abreu, LF
    Jerry Hairston Jr., 3B
    James Loney, 1B
    Matt Treanor, C
    Chris Capuano, P

  40. trublu4ever says:

I love how hey say we have signed another veteran player…why the hell don’t they just say: we have added another old fart to our already challenged lineup?!

  41. JhallWally says:

Damn, that was quick. Made their starter throw 8 pitches. Could be a long day.

  42. trublu4ever says:

    Crap…what a way to start a game!

  43. trublu4ever says:

    Whew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. trublu4ever says:

    Bob-by!! 😉

  45. trublu4ever says:

    Cappy! lmao!

  46. trublu4ever says:

    Wow….good pitching, Cappy!

  47. trublu4ever says:

It’s amazing that so far, Cappy & Lilly are our #2 & #3 pitchers…..too bad Billz doesn’t want to join the party.

    • JhallWally says:

Yep, Cap and Lilly have pitched much better than I thought either of them would so far. Billz is and has been a huge disappointment for the last 3 years. I’m not surprised at Harangs performance. He’s basically a decent 5th starter at best.

  48. 32and53fan says:

Does this sound like Magic and the other owners lied when they said McCourt would get no revenue from the land?
    http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-0505-dodgers-land-20120505,0,2033775.story

    Unacceptable!

  49. trublu4ever says:

    Awesome catch, Matty!

  50. trublu4ever says:

Loweenio looks worse every at bat!

  51. trublu4ever says:

Oh, no…..we have to rely on our BP now!

  52. enchantedbeaver says:

OK, so I’m a little late to the party…

  53. trublu4ever says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…not Jamey!

  54. enchantedbeaver says:

Cupaguano so far is making Ned look good. Its this kind of signing that actually works out that all the reporters point to and glow wonderful upon him when in actuality its just Ned throwing as much shit on the wall as possible and having something stick.

  55. enchantedbeaver says:

    Wright sucks.

  56. enchantedbeaver says:

    How’d Beli look today Tru?

  57. trublu4ever says:

    Yay….a win!

  58. JhallWally says:

    Woo-Hoo, we win!!!

  59. nedisajerk says:

I don’t know how many times that I have say this but I hate fielder’s indifference. This team like to give there opponent 1 run so they won’t pitch a shutout.

  60. crzblue says:

Congratulations to Capuano. Early in April, I dropped him from my baseball fantasy team. Oh well, still in first place in my division though.
Congrats to Eric on his second letter in the LA Times. I think is two, maybe I missed another one.
    -Emma

  61. oldbrooklynfan says:

The Dodgers starting pitching has really been doing well this year. 4 of the 5 averaging 6 innings pitched per start with Harang just 1.2 innings short of the mark. They’ve totaled 19 quality starts and 10 gems. According to my figures.

  62. nedisajerk says:

It look so weird to see Abreu wear #33 instead #53 but no way he was going to wear #53 when that is Drysdale number and retire.

  63. kahliforni says:

To Dodgereric, wherever you are today…nice letter in the Times!

  64. nellyjune says:

I was in San Mateo today watching college baseball.
    Way to go Dodgers!!!
Way to go Dodgereric!! Another fabulous letter!

  65. trublu4ever says:

I’m going with Nellyjune to watch Michael’s team play today so, you guys will have to take care of our boys in blue. Thank-you!

  66. sparkleplenty1 says:

Game on after a long rain delay.

  67. sparkleplenty1 says:

Matt’s not starting today – has a tight hammy.

  68. sparkleplenty1 says:

Hairston’s hurt now – possible hammy injury. Uh oh!

    • vl4eccjr says:

UGH! This isn’t good! With Kennedy replacing him, it’s a big minus for offensive output. . 😦

  69. enchantedbeaver says:

This ragamuffin bunch will be lucky to score a run without Kemp.

Hope Kasten is watching. Hey Stan, you could use about 5 more GOOD ballplayers.

  70. enchantedbeaver says:

Close your eyes and swing from the heels Aaron!

  71. vl4eccjr says:

Wow! Lucked out there! That was a taylor made DP bobbled.

  72. sparkleplenty1 says:

    At least we scored.

  73. enchantedbeaver says:

    Harang really sucks doesn’t he.

  74. vl4eccjr says:

Congrats to the Kings on their sweep of the Blues. They look awfull tough to beat.

  75. vl4eccjr says:

Wow! That close up of Harang in the dugout wasn’t kind was it? LOL

    • vl4eccjr says:

The dude has a humungous lower lip. I’m trying to remember what cartoon character he resembles. . . .

  76. sparkleplenty1 says:

    A surprise stolen base!

  77. sparkleplenty1 says:

I’m watching the WGN feed – these announcers are really bad. They keep talking about percentages that aren’t even relevant.

    • vl4eccjr says:

Ditto. Brenly has always been a real tool. His dislike for the Dodgers has carried over from his days as a G’nat.

  78. vl4eccjr says:

    WTG Juan!!

  79. enchantedbeaver says:

    Wow – three!!!

  80. sparkleplenty1 says:

At least Rivera is helping out. Andre must have been feeling mighty lonesome!

  81. vl4eccjr says:

With today’s lineup, they are lucky Garza isn’t pitching.

  82. vl4eccjr says:

Poof!! Harank leaves a ransid odor doesn’t he?

  83. enchantedbeaver says:

Better score about 10-12 more for Harang. How does Ned find these guys?

  84. nedisajerk says:

I just got back from the Staples Center what a game that was.

I hate to see ground ball to 2nd that didn’t end up as a DP.

  85. vl4eccjr says:

    No sweep for Heat.

  86. sparkleplenty1 says:

    Harang was sure lucky there.

  87. sparkleplenty1 says:

Whew! I hate this tightrope walking.

  88. sparkleplenty1 says:

C’mon Matt. Do some business here!

  89. nedisajerk says:

Holy crap look at the boxscore from the Orioles and Red Sox that have to be a record of DP for one team and the Orioles have there DH pitching now. It look weird to see the pretend pitcher is 0/7with 5 k’s. Now the Red Sox have a position player pitching.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=320506102

  90. nedisajerk says:

Come on Donny PH for Kennedy with Abreu.

  91. vl4eccjr says:

Ruh roh! Javy can’t find the zone again.

  92. enchantedbeaver says:

Guerra is no closer and the sooner Mattingly figures that out the better.

  93. vl4eccjr says:

Poof! Another one blown by Javy!
Should have left Jansen in there!

    • enchantedbeaver says:

Mattingly’s a JoJo The Clown clone when it comes to the bully, especially closers. Chrimany, I’d rather have Brox out there than Javy. This team should have at least 3-4 more wins if it wasn’t for Javy’s crappy pitching and Mattingly’s stupidity.

      • vl4eccjr says:

Javy’s had enough chances to redeem himself. He throws too many fastballs & has been getting lit up. He needs to work on some other pitches. Jansen should get the starting job.

        • enchantedbeaver says:

Javy needs to be optioned back down to the Lookouts until he can figure out how to pitch again.

  94. enchantedbeaver says:

Also have to wonder just how intelligent the whole damn front office is too when they play games with a 24 man roster because they won’t put Uribe on the friggin DL.

With the line-up they have left in there and Mattingly already blowing through the bully of and decent pitchers, they might as well just go and catch their flight home. Pretty damn pathetic when this is the best you can do against the Rox and Cubs.

  95. enchantedbeaver says:

Sorry Tru, but I’d still trade Dre at the deadline. Vastly overrated.

  96. vl4eccjr says:

Kennedy continues to stink it up in the batters box. . .What a waste!

  97. enchantedbeaver says:

Boy that Jamey Wright’s some kind of pitcher huh?

    • enchantedbeaver says:

      Pathetic.

When are the new owners going to start taking names and kicking ass? No Kemp and this team’s every bit as pathetic in person as they are on paper. Maybe moreso.

    • vl4eccjr says:

He’s a one inning wonder at best.

      • enchantedbeaver says:

Oh no VL – he’s our multiple innings eater out of the bully that can spot start. Ned said so.

  98. DodgerZona says:

Wright, Kennedy DFA already….But Ned loves them

  99. DodgerZona says:

    BS

  100. nedisajerk says:

For the 2nd times in a row Wright is more a 1 inning pitcher when you walk someone intentional is going to be hard to get your control back and this what happen to him now.

  101. vl4eccjr says:

How embarrassing! Leave it to this pen to lose the game with a bases loaded walk.
Pathetic! They couldn’t even scrape out a .500 road trip against two bad teams.

    • enchantedbeaver says:

VL, that line-up they had in there at the end couldn’t have scored a run in a month of Sundays.

Its time the new regime starts DFAing some of Ned’s worthless tripe, including Ned himself.

  102. nedisajerk says:

Bring back Miles he can pitch.

    • sparkleplenty1 says:

So can Loney! Remember when he warmed up last year and then went on that hot hitting streak? Maybe it can happen again. Couldn’t hurt 🙂

  103. grizzy says:

That’s one that should not have got away. Donny looked as though he was running out of patience when he went to the mound to talk to Guerra. Lack of production and a sub par bullpen is a terrible combination that cannot continue. It will be interesting to see which gets fixed first and how fast any of it happens.

  104. sparkleplenty1 says:

As much as I hate making excuses for Donnie’s poor decisions, the bottom line is that this team is a result of Ned’s incompetence and maybe Donnie’s just doing the best he can with what he has. The Dodgers have 3 good players and that is that. We need fixing quick, Magic!! HELP!!!!

    • enchantedbeaver says:

I agree about Ned Sparks, but Donnie’s got to take the blame for keeping Guerra in the closer roll. I honestly think that his poor decisions and insisting that Guerra is the closer come hell or high water has probably cost this team 4 wins already. They should really be 22-6.

After the fast start though, if this team finishes out of the playoffs this year I have to think that heads will roll, Ned’s and Donnie’s being one and two.

  105. trublu4ever says:

There is no such thing as a “closer” anymore. They all blow leads and all suck big time!

  106. crash24now says:

    Lineup time

    Gordon ss
    Ellis 2b
