Who are the bidders for the Dodgers? Why would we want or not want them to own the Dodgers? And why in the heck does McCourt get to choose anything about who the new owners are and how they can buy? I can already see more people here have greater insight than I on who these new members to our Dodger family!

I really haven’t picked any favorites yet and there’s isn’t anybody that I’m against. Not at the moment anyway. Just look out for this Macciello he may want to bring the Dodgers back to Brooklyn.

Yep… I think Ethier is on a mission. I hope he has a great season. Same for Loney, Billz, and Uribe… We’re gonna need them all(or at least 3 of them) to stay healthy and contribute to make a significant improvement over last years showing.
I read that article. It was obvious he wanted to say more about the ownership issues, and he made it pretty clear he would love to remain a Dodger if it’s in the cards. Whatever the future holds for Andre, he’s going to have a great season.
I think the real point is, why are we signing Rivera at all? Sands should be given the opportunity to succeed or fail. Now you’ve just about guaranteed his failure by making him part time, if he even makes the team at all.
Yep…Sucks!! I hope our new owner and GM are more like the Tampa Bay Rays. Develope good young talent and give them a chance to succeed.
It is amazing a young kid like Sands warming up the bench. Although he’ll see a lot work at 1st and RF spelling Loney & Ethier against left hand pitching, it still seems strange that he isn’t starting in the bigs or at Albuquerque.

Keep in mind length of contract, amount of contract, who they may be blocking or taking playing time away from, and general expected suckage on the field.
Maybe we can do it on a point system. Put the guys in order 1 thru 7 with 1 being the worst. The guy with the lowest point total will be deemed biggest suck-king player.

I have to go with Rivera #1 over Harang and Crapuano because he is blocking Sands and I don’t think we needed to sign him at all. Plus this guy has been DFA’ed a couple of times in the past year and a half for a reason. And his name is Juan.
Harang and Capuano get the 2 and 3 nod because collectively alot is expected of them and with ill advised 2 year deals they are blocking our young arms.
Kennedy just sucks, especially when Sellers is available.
Treanor will suck but they aren’t and never were expecting anything from him except to give AJ a break now and then and keep the bench warm until they think Fed-Ex is ready.
I think Hairston is the best signing of the bunch and quite possibly will end up playing alot when Uribe and/or Ellis hit the DL.
Anyway you look at it, this bunch eats up alot of payroll for very little return over replacement level players. And, the price goes up next year. Money that in my opinion would have been better spent on 1 or 2 real impact players.
Hopefully they all do well and surprise us. I figure, 2 will completely suck(-WAR), 3 will be OK (0-1 WAR), and 2 will do well (+1 WAR and up).
My votes:
Cupaguano – 1 – the funnest name will be the worst
Rivera – 2 – no power at a power position
Harangatang – 3 – it’s gonna be Kershaw and pray for four days of rain
M Ellis – 4 – we’re gonna be looking back on O-Dog fondly
Kennedy – 5 – he’s down here just because of low expectations
Hairston– 6
Treanor– 7 – hoping for a big surprise at catcher
I had to figure Kennedy #1 – of all the signing’s, his was probably the most unnecessary, and he hasn’t been good for 7 years or so. Any ABs he takes away from anyone I figure are wasted, yet he’ll see a fair amount playing time because Donnie’s Joe’s disciple.
Treanor’s right up there with Kennedy as a useless signing. Not a huge deal as back-up catchers usually aren’t, but I expect him to pretty much pick up where Velez left off.
Cupaguano has never been much good, though we’ll see him every 5th day. When his arm falls off sometime mid-June, we’ll all be rejoicing because he’ll be about 2-7 with an ERA of 5.5+
Hairston (of the Hairston and Kennedy duo) will at least have more value than his cohort, though that may not be saying much.
Ellis may prove to be more worthless in the long haul than Cupaguano, but Sellers was/isn’t going to set the world afire either. Ellis’ bane is that he gets paid 8X more a season to do it than Sellers does. Here’s a nice fact – Ellis’ last three seasons he’s OBP’d .288 (2009), .252 (2010) and .317 (2011). No doubt Donnie will bat him 2nd.
Rivera has the potential to slide down on the scale as much as the rest of them, but when you look at the others, all he has to do to be more valuable is hit about .230 with 13-14 HR. That said, THAT might take a Herculean effort on his part.
Harangatan I figure will at least be a typical #5 starter. Its just his misfortune he was hired to be a #3.

First of all, I agree and have said all along that such a thing as a deadline means nothing in this “agreement to sell” deal. Who’s going to do anything about a missed deadline? Jamie is stuck with waiting for her money; Selig and MLB are up shit’s creek, because they never had any balls or leverage once the thing went into bankruptcy. Also beware of the new owner whose bid overpays for the franchise, especially if all the land and every aspect of the Dodgers is not included. It’s one thing to buy the team at an advantageous price and then use a lot of extra money you have to improve the stadium and the team on the field; it’s quite another to pay top dollar and then have yo find an extra billion for those same needed improvements. At some point early on your investment gets squeezed to the point where it no longer makes sense. Who pays then? Only the fans, once again.
If you haven’t seen this yet, it’s kind of funny. It’s the ligther side of Andre. He is on a radio show messing with his best friend Dustin Pedroia on a local Boston radio sports talk show.

Good stuff Nelly. Thanks for the link. I hope we get back our old pre-divorce/bankruptcy Andre. I think Nedcompoop made a huge mistake not working out an extension with him when they did the Billz deal. He hasn’t been quite the same since.
As much as we all detest Frank and Furter, it has to be much harder working for/under them. Especially when your basic nature and ethics are fundamentally opposed to their greed, vanity, and ineptitude.
Another theory is that his knee has been bothering him for the past two seasons. Andre finally owned up to it and had it surgically corrected this off-season. Hopefully that will propel him back to those wonderful 2009 days of walk-off after walk-off. Wouldn’t that be great?
Personally, I think it was a combination of both. I think not working out a contract created that chip on his shoulder (that most of us love), but with that chip,comes a win-at-all-costs attitude (it’s how he won the job away from JP in the first place), and maybe his knee couldn’t keep up with that attitude.

Whatever the reason, it’s a big year for Andre, whether he stays a Dodger or not. A big season for him means a FA contract……. somewhere. So, I have no doubts he’s going to come out with a win-at-all-cost-chip-on-his-shoulder attitude and ready to prove to himself he belongs here.

Where does that put us offensively? Great production from the 3 and 4 hitters, likely a very good leadoff man in Dee Gordon, and what else?
Marginal production from Loney, Uribe, Ellis, Ellis, and Rivera. That means I will be watching the game about 30% of the time and ignoring the game 70% of the time.
The back 80% of the rotation is also nothing to write home about. Oh, I suppose Billz is passable in the #2 slot. But then we have Lilly, Cupaguano, and Harangatang. Might as well bring in Haggar Slacks and the Ortizii pair.
At first I thought we had the wrong link but when I heard Andre laughing, indicating he was joking around, I knew I had the right feed. It’s great to hear these guys kidding around but I don’t think Andre is seriously thinking of going to the Red Sox. (I hope not) I do think that Dustin wants Ethier though. I wish it’s the other way around too.I wouldn’t be against Dustin playing with us.
I agree….. Andre wants to stay in LA if it’s a possiblity to stay, but I do read at least one article a week out of Boston that mentions them wanting Andre playing for the Red Sox. Oh, and yes, it would be fabulous to have Dustin in Dodger Blue.

Yeah, and we were hotly pursuing CC Sabathia too as I recall Ned saying, only to have CC say Ned never contacted him at all.
Evidently we’re expected to believe that they could offer Fielder $160M, but couldn’t scrape together $10 or $12M for Kuroda.

According to the LA Times, Cuban and Gilbert didn’t advance to the next round of bidding.
Anyone want to take bets we’ll end up with that hedge fund A-hole Cohen?

At this point in time, Cuban seems like he is doomed to never own a baseball team, at least in a head capacity. Maybe him joining a group could make this an interesting affair.

That’s a good question. I was thinking the same thing, as I think many of us were. I would assume the money, the parking lots and what kind of plans the bidders have.I would think it would be in the line of what McCourt, would want or not want. Most likely he wants to come out of this in the best shape he can.
I never figured Cuban would be a factor. First, I think it is safe to assume MLB is afraid of a guy like that, preferring crap like Frank McCourt. Second, I seriously doubt Cuban thinks the Dodgers are worth what it probably will take to be the successful winning bidder. Even Cuban has limits on money, which leads me to think it will be some sort of investment group (or groups) that will end up with the Dodgers. If there is strong local leadership/management, perhaps that will not be a big deal.
But I must confess I am amused at the fact that MLB is charging bidders who make the first cut $25,000 to cover the cost of background checks. I certainly hope this process has been highly improved since the last time the Dodgers were sold. If MLB paid for a background check on the McCourts, I hope they find a better and more reliable process this time.
I think that after what happened with McCourt, it should be very, very important to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Of course that doesn’t include paying for my trip, in ’09. haha.

So according to mlbtraderumors.com, via Bill Shaikin, the Steve Garvey/Orel Hershiser group was denied the chance of advancing to the 2nd round.
Hmn, sounds like McCourt had a hand in denying one of his former employers a chance to purchase the team. Ironically, McCourt fired Garvey after Garvey criticized him and outlined what needed and what he’d do to change the culture, atmosphere and aura of the team.
Here’s to maybe the Garvey/Hershiser group joining with another group.

According to what I’ve read, McCourt has absolute say in who should or should not be given the chance to purchase the team. Then MLB will “vet” whomever is chosen. So should he choose to, he can play favorites – and it’s my guess that Garvey/Hershiser just weren’t on the favorites list. So he’s still in control, to the bitter end. Bleh!

I don’t think that Hershiser had anything to do with it. I think Garvey had two strikes against him. His financial history and the fact that he was just recently fired by McCourt. I may be wrong but I think Hershiser would be better off without Garvey if he did want to join another group.
I agree, Garvey may excite some fans because of what he did on the field but it is off the field business and personal history that causes me concern. I loved Garv as a player and will always remember how he played the game. I was never too keen on him with regard to ownership. Not sure what to think about Orel other than being confident he has no character issues.
I agree with you all the way on that. Garvey will always be one of my favorite Dodgers. He was one of the best, there’s no doubt about that.
Talking about character issues, is anybody else concerned that we have so many outside investor types, both Wall Street and foreign, who’re involved in this bidding? I don’t see much good coming from people who would look at the Dodgers as they would another hedge fund. SPARE ME!!!
Bear, I fully expect to get the same type crappy ownership we have now. Most of these guys shouldn’t even get a whiff of being approved by MLB, and we can be sure all Frank will do is pick the highest bidder.

Cuban out and I understand that his reason is that it is a sale for media rights rather than the joy of owning the Dodgers. NSB, I have always cautioned, “be careful what you wish for”. Certainly, there could easily be an owner better than what the Dodgers have had since O’Malley but it remains to be seen if the next owner will in fact be better. Remember, McCourt definitely looked and acted better than Fox at the beginning. If he had been morally and fiscally responsible we would not be in this mess. I share the concern about foreign money or groups from outside Los Angeles. I have no illusions that a new owner lower ticket and concession prices and fully expect them to rise just as McCourt wanted and pretty much for the same reason: to pay down debt. Yes, getting rid of the McCourts is most definitely a good thing but please excuse my lack of enthusiasm as we wait for what comes next.
I think foreign groups, especially South Korea and Japan, would have high reverence and respect for the Dodgers organization and what it means not only to baseball, but to the world on a higher level. Definitely more reverence than McCourt ever had.
I’m sure Mr. O’Malley has a great reason for throwing in with those guys, though I’d rather him throw in with Gold/Disney or Kroneke.
But looking to the future, I’d like very much if Magic/Kasten/GuggenheimCEO ended up with the high bid. Great foundation for a winner, Magic the face, Kasten the organization, and CEO the funding.
But I think Selig bent over too much for any good owner to be a sure thing. Just hope Commissioner 5-fries-short-of-a-happy-meal did a good enough job of weeding out potential future-McCourts in the part of the process he DOES have control over.
Either way, the Dodgers will abide.
And does anyone know what happened with Josh Macciello’s bid? I haven’t heard anything one way or the other regarding his standing in the second round. Though he would’ve benefited greatly from throwing in with, say, Gold/Disney or Hershiser. He has a boatload of cash, which I’m sure McCourt loved, but Baseball is the group doing the initial pruning, so it would’ve been nice if he added some recognizance to his bid.
Then again, if I owned up to $20 million in gold and silver mining, I’d make sure no one knew who I was either.

Beli is one of those can’t lose situations that Ned I’m sure will find a way to f-up. If he pitches well, its a win for us. If he stinks, its no loss. Unfortunately we have to throw in the Ned factor which means if he’s stinks, Ned still won’t want to lose him and will find a way to keep him around because he’s out of options, even if that means cutting someone like Lindblom from the 25-man, or DFAing some other marginal character that still has more ability.
The Ned Factor in any situation is dangerous 🙂
I think if Belisario pulls a good season out of the bag, the Dodgers should find a way to stop him from going back to Venezuela where he has too much trouble finding his way back. (lol)

Had another dreadful thought… Since Frank gets to choose the winning bid, don’t you think he’s inclined to go with less money if within that offer he gets to keep the parking lots and land? I just feel we’ll NEVER be rid of Frank totally, whether its him getting to retain properties or getting some sort of side/under-the-table deal.
I think that if a bidder wants the parking lots to be included, he or they would have to pay a separate price because the way I understand it, the parking lots are not included in the sale.
I can live with McCockroach keeping the land and parking lots much easier than the new owners keeping Nedcompoop.
Even if McScum keeps the land/parking lots, he still doesn’t have the final say in how it is utilized. The city and county boards and commissions ultimately have the final say in how property is utilized and developed. Just a thought.
It will definately be refreshing when ST gets started. I am very curious to see how this latest Ned group pans out. Also going to be interesting to see what Ethier and Loney bring this year. They are both playing for their next contract and baseball future. And I wonder which Billz will show up this year. Short of Kemp and Kersh, this team is one big question mark.

I’m hoping Ethier, Loney and Billingsley can gain back our confidence in them. To me the fewer the turnovers the better. All three must come out of ST hot as firecrackers or else we’ll be seeing them in different uniforms in the near future.They need big years.
A lot of “ifs” going into ST this season just as there were last season. One huge difference is at shortstop. Last season we had the fragile Furcal and this season we have the inexperienced Dee Gordon. Last season we had Carroll and Miles as backups who played well; this season we have replacements for those two guys. The bigger ifs are Loney, Ethier and Uribe. We all know what we need from these three. Will Matt Kemp find a way to be even better? I think we all expect Kershaw to be at least as good as he was last season but I share the concern about Billz. Will this be his year to shine? The bullpen looks o.k. but what about the other starting pitchers? We will see.
Yes, a lot of ?????, as you say we’ll just have to wait and see.

This signing really underlines and puts an exclamation point on how incredibly stupid the Guerrier contract is/was.
Guerrier making $4.75M this year and next. And he is no better than McDougald and this Coffey fellow.
You can pick up guys with Guerriers numbers all day for around $1-1.5M.
