The puzzle is coming together

You are sitting at your dining room table.  Dinner is over, the dishes, glasses, spoons and forks have been cleared away.  In their place is a box, the contents of which are scattered over the large, flat surface.  Hundreds of irregularly shaped pieces of all colors lie before you.  The only clue as to what they could be is the picture on the box.  It shows a jubilant pair of baseball players, resplendent in their crisp, white Los Angeles Dodgers home uniforms, each holding up one side of the World Series Championship Trophy.  They are Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw and are surrounded by a myriad of happy faces.  In the background, slightly blurred, is the iconic Dodger scoreboard behind right field displaying the final score of the last hard fought series game.

Until now, the pieces have been a multicolored jumble.  But a few of them have started to coalesce into a recognizable part of the picture on the box.  With the news that Matt Kemp is on the verge of signing an eight year, $160,000,000 contract, the puzzle is starting to take shape.  The image of Matt Kemp  is now clearly visible.  There are still hundreds of those small pieces that do not yet make sense, but it is a beginning.  You can see an eye and a toothy smile that appears to be that of Kershaw, but it is still far too early in your quest to see the completed picture.

All you can do during these dark autumn and winter nights is to keep working.  But you will keep going because you know that someday that the picture of a future World Champion Dodger team will be real once again.

I like to get a quick start on my puzzles. What else needs to happen to make this the best off-season ever?

    1. Kemp signed to long-term deal (already done).
    2. Frankie McCourt sells the team (wants to, but it’s not done yet).
    3. Nedcompoop is fired
    4. Stan Conte is fired
    5. Honeycut is fired
    6. Clayton Kershaw signed to long-term deal, some think it’s premature, others think it’s time to get it done.

    • JhallWally says:

Uribe is on a diet and training program to show up to ST in shape.

Andre Ethier is attending Anger Management counseling.

Clayton Kershaw is not playing pick-up basketball or riding a motorcycle.

    • JhallWally says:

I agree with your list Crash!! It wouldn’t break my heart if they sent Dildon packing as well.

Signing a #2 starter, and a real 2B or 3B (by real I don’t mean Aaron Miles) are the next priorities. Uribe is going to get whichever position they don’t sign a real player for.
I think these positions need to be addressed before Catcher.

      • selltheteam says:

I’d be willing to give Dildon another year. At least he realized that Javy Guerra and Kenley Jansen were his #1 and #2 relievers. Wish he could help Loney keep his head straight. Or maybe Dildon did too much with Loney last year, and just needs to leave him be.

      • nedisajerk says:

Yep I agree Wally and I can live with a no power hitting catcher that hit around .280, having a good obp, played good defense and called a good game than it ok with me.

    • 32and53fan says:

Have everybody, players and coaches, read a web page written by former Dodger Jack Perconte:

What was so cool about our team was that we knew we were good and we liked to win. You may say that that is not so unusual and you are right. The unusual part was the mindset that we developed of, “we ain’t gonna lose,” which is whole other level up from just wanting to win. Teams play to win all the time, but great teams I believe have a fear of losing that propels them to give that little extra. When you play to win, you give your best hoping to have that winning feeling. When you win, you feel good, enjoy it and sleep at night. When you fear losing, you feel lousy, try to learn from it and lose a lot of sleep – not very fun, especially at the higher levels of baseball when you are paid to win, of course. When a team decides they will not lose, they do all they can to avoid losing. They put more intensity into everything, so they do not have to experience that losing feeling. They prepare the right way, pull for each other, play every inning like it is the bottom of the 9th and feel as though they are truly part of something special. When a team decides that losing is not fun and they do all they can to prevent it, greatness may appear, as it did for us. That special feeling, and team, comes along once in a lifetime, if lucky, and is why it was so memorable and great. At least 16 Dukes from that team went on to play in the major leagues – impressive in itself. However, that is not the end of the story.

      • selltheteam says:

I like what I read about Clayton Kershaw’s attitude. Every game he tries to improve. Never is he good enough. Never is he satisfied with the status quo. No matter how good you are, you can always get better.

  2. JhallWally says:

I think I would rather pay a little more for Kelly Johnson. But, I guess this wouldn’t be the worst Neddy could do. At least he can play some D.

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/dodgers-mark-ellis-on-verge-of-two-year-deal.html

    • trublu4ever says:

Neddie is a busy little son-of-a-bitch, isn’t he?! I guess he is trying to boost season ticket sales 😉 Ellis…not too bad.

      • JhallWally says:

LOL!! I think he is trying to save his job. Ha-Ha!!!!
Considering what is out there and for how much, I could live with Mark Ellis at 2B.

        • The Mark Ellis of Colorado I could live with, not so much the A’s version of this past season, but where would that leave Sellers and Ivan De Jesus Jr.

          • JhallWally says:

I think Sellers is going to be our utility guy. DeJesus is the odd man out and will probably be kept at AAA for emergency backup or traded. For some reason, he has fallen out of favor with the organization. If nobody signs Miles, I look for him to be back on a cheap deal. About $1M.

  3. JhallWally says:

Well, I guess it is a done deal. Mark Ellis is our new 2B. Now get us a real #2 starter and I think we’ve got as good a shot as anyone to win the NL West.

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/dodgers-reach-agreement-with-mark-ellis.html

    • I could live without another low OBP guy. Be the same problem as last year – no one on base to drive in. But he fits Ned’s mold – played in the bay area, will be 35 during the season, and his best years are behind him. They really must not think to much of Sellers, and absolutely nothing of DeJesus.

      • It’s sad how Kelly Johnson was right there, and for a couple more diggits, he could of had a mid size bat @ 2B. Now, he has a younger version of Carroll. They will probably just give him Carroll’s number since no change will happen.

      • selltheteam says:

One good thing about Mark Ellis – he has more power than Carroll and Miles put together. But that’s not saying much. DeJesus has been way down on the list ever since he broke his leg. Sellers did not quite prove himself with his bat late in the season. Look for him to get another chance in 2012 as the season wears on.

        • If Uribe comes back from the offseason and has been doing his P90X and looks 50 lbs lighter, than I consider that an upgrade. Maybe a Chris Snyder or look for a trade with the Blue Jays for J.P Arencibia

    • nellyjune says:

My colleague next door ain’t going to like that!! Ellie was her favorite player when he played with the A’s, and she was okay with him going to the Rockies. However, this will kill her – LOL!!! I can’t wait to scoop her on this!! LMAO!!!

      • nellyjune says:

Okay – she isn’t happy, but I told her I would take care of him – LOL!! She’s worried the big city isn’t for him. He will be great for the clubhouse in terms of a good, overall, grounded type of player. People are already commenting that he isn’t a step up from Carroll, but I think he is, especially defensively. I would put him in the good PVL category (for now).

        • JhallWally says:

This deal doesn’t disgust me like the Uribum and Grrrear signings, but, I’m not thrilled about it.

If he can stay healthy and play some better than average defense, it could end up being an OK deal. Not really a game changing impact type offensive player the Dodgers need badly.
He has been injury prone the last 3 years. Probably could get the same production from Sellers for 1/10th the cost and used the money to get a real #2 starter. Same with Rivera. Sands at 1/10th the money.

          • nellyjune says:

That goes back to why go after somebody in the first place in my opinion. Like you said, it’s not a game changer, so why change? I agree with you jhall. I just hope it works out for us, or it’s going to be a long spring for me if he doesn’t do well. Jill knows what we are like when players aren’t playing well – LOL!!!

          • JhallWally says:

LOL!! Just hope he stays healthy.

  4. Am I the only one thinking that at $160M, Matt gave us a hometown discount?

    • It’s right around where he was at. Another season of the same like this past season and he easily supasses $200 mil. In a way, he did give a discount. And we thank him for that. Maybe, under the weather, their working on a deal for Clayton and Matt said, give the discount so you can sign Clayton. Future of Dodger Baseball is bright.

    • JhallWally says:

No!! I think he really likes LA and the California/Hollywood lifestyle.
He could have definately got more if he had a good 2012 and become a free agent.

  5. Did we not get the memo. Is that new sabermetrics guy the new GM or something. Because Ned don’t do signings like these. Can someone confirm.? Has there been a coup within the front office?

  6. This is great news. Finally Kemp is signed for the next 8 years pending a physical. I’m not worried about him passing it. This is truly something to celebrate. I’m just hoping they feel the same way about Ethier and happy times are back again.
Kershaw’s just waiting in the wings, it won’t be long.
    HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. I still don’t sign Dre to more than a couple years. He’s already 30, can’t hit lefties, and has a volatile personality. If it was me, I’d only offer him arbitration for this season, and if he rehabilitates his stats, flip him at the trade deadline for a bonafide catcher and/or a couple top prospects. No way I’d sign someone his age to a big bucks long-term contract.

  8. lbirken says:

I think it is safe to say we all pretty much assumed even before the sale was announced that if the Dodgers did anything at all with Kemp and Ethier, it was more likely and more important to sign Kemp first. I will say that it does surprise me a little the Dodgers would give anyone 8 years and I certainly hope whatever magic pill Kemp took last season carries over after he signs such a big contract.

As for Ethier, it would be nice to see him play healthy and get that chip back on his shoulder.

  9. Assuming they re-sign Kuroda, this team isn’t any better or any worse than they finished with this past season. Is that good or bad?

    • JhallWally says:

Whether or not we contend is going to come down to what Ethier, Loney, Uribum, and Billz do. They all were very disappointing last year. Ellis and Rivera are not likely to make any real difference for the better and stand a better chance of being a detriment.

      • nellyjune says:

I just think the thought of them eventually having new ownership will put some much needed spark into this team that seemed to be lacking last season (at least the first half. Pitching is still an unknown at this point though, and without pitching, all the Matt Kemps in the world aren’t going to get it done without a pitching staff that can keep run production down from the opposing team.

      • selltheteam says:

The team finished the season pretty well. We won 9 of the last 12 games. We also won 25 of the last 35 games.

        How did we do that?

        1. Got rid of the Thames/Gibbons platoon
        2. Got rid of Navarro
        3. Switched out Furcal for Dee Gordon

The personnel at the end of the 2011 season are much better than the personnel at the beginning of the 2011 season. But we still have a long ways to go to become legitimate contenders. If the four-some that JHall can contribute, then, yes, we can get into the playoffs.

  10. koufax1963 says:

I think the most significant move made that led to a improved end of the season was the making hansen the hitting coach. Keep him there!

  11. Matt Treanor Ned? Matt Treanor?

  12. http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20111115&content_id=25978234&vkey=news_la&c_id=la#disqus_thread

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

    Cue Scott Joplin…

Ned says we need to get a big bat (THE HYPE)

Season ticket prices are reduced (THE HOOK)

Season ticket sales increase (THE STING)

Season ticket sales up, Ned says no big bat (THE REALITY)

  13. lbirken says:

No real surprise Ned says a big bat is off the table at the moment. Did anyone really think the Dodgers would take a serious run at Pujols or Fielder? I will take Kemp’s 8 year deal at 160 mil over what it might cost to get one of those other two.

It was mentioned earlier that Ethier might have felt slighted by the deal Bilz got. We really don’t know what discussions the Dodgers may have had with Andre but doesn’t it bother anyone if he really did let something like that affect him? It does me, unless he channels those feelings into elevating his game. I am looking forward to a healthy, hungry Andre for 2012. If the Dodgers can make a trade for him that makes sense, so be it.

  14. nellyjune says:

I am guessing Ned is thinking Matt is the big bat.

  15. nellyjune says:

    What about pitching?

  16. So Treanor gets $850K and an option year or $150K buyout. So the guy can absolutely suck (which he will) and they give him basically a million dollars for this coming season.

Mark my words, we’d get more out of Pie Traynor, and he’s been dead since 1972.

  17. JhallWally says:

Enjoy it while you can Nedcompoop. You’re days are numbered and dwindling fast. At least you’ve made the new owners decision to can your incompetent ass a no brainer.

  18. messagebear says:

Besides getting Matt signed up, business for the rest of the team makeup goes as usual or WORSE. Treanor and Ellis? are any kind of improvement? While bankruptcy court can cover it, why not rescind Ned’s contract – that would show a real improvement for the new ownership.

  19. trublu4ever says:

I’m hearing the Prince wants $200M….that’s insane!

  20. messagebear says:

The whole payroll scene in MLB is getting obscene. Guys who’ve been around for years and never hit a lick are still getting their $1 million, as Treanor can attest. Guys at the end of the line like Carroll and Ellis are still bringing in multi-millions. I’m glad to have Matt around on our team in this environment, but I have to tell you that chances are no better than 50/50 that there are going to be years when he’s just not worth his $20 million a year pay either. But then I don’t have the money to be a major league owner, and nobody awarded me a franchise with no cash down like Frank managed.

  21. dodgereric says:

Hey guys, you gotta read this:

“McCourt is expected to represent the Dodgers at the [winter] meetings Wednesday and Thursday even though he had been asked unofficially to let General Manager Ned Colletti or another club official represent the Dodgers.”

“”Can you believe this guy is coming to the meeting?” asked an executive. “Wouldn’t you just think he’d take his money and go?'”

……..and if that isn’t enough, a little farther down the article it says,

“Baseball people say Colletti had worked out a 5-for-1 trade with Cleveland that would have landed left-hander CC Sabathia in early July [of ’08]. But McCourt would not agree to pick up the $5.5-million remaining on Sabathia’s contract, so Colletti settled for Indians infielder Casey Blake later in the month.

Even in that deal, McCourt’s tightfisted-ness was costly to the Dodgers. The Indians got catcher Carlos Santana, instead of a lesser prospect, because they paid the $2 million Blake was owed.”

I know I’ve been a little out of it all lately, but I never heard that one before. I can’t help but wonder who the 5 Dodgers were.

    http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-1116-rogers-mccourt-mlb-20111116,0,2797371.story

  22. lbirken says:

That 5 for 1 L.A. Times story is interesting but all we have to go on is unnamed “baseball people”. Who are these people? I find it hard to believe the Dodgers would have made such a deal regardless of who had to pick up Sabathia’s salary.

  23. trublu4ever says:

Marlins offer Pujols 9 years…$225M and Reyes 5 years $90M. Unbelievable!

    • lbirken says:

They are desperate to but bodies in the seats of a new stadium but they would have to sell a lot of tickets to pay those kinds of salaries. Hope these guys stay healthy.

    • 32and53fan says:

Sometimes I wish that there was a salary cap of just a few million.
20 million and up contracts are outrageous and are just not worth it.

Even the league minimum for the rawest rookie is three or four times what most highly educated workers are likely to ever get in their careers.

Of course, the only fair thing to do if they brought salaries down would be to pass the savings to the fans. I wouldn’t be happy to see a superstar be limited to a modest amount if the owner just pocketed the savings.

  24. Nellyjune says:

Enchanted – Your dreams are coming true!! Dodgers met with Harang today. I know….I thought that would make your day. Your welcome 🙂

  25. trublu4ever says:

Looks like, if the sale of the Astros goes through, they will be moving to the ALWest……Angels not happy about it at all.

He signed Treanor and Ellis up
    Though neither have some pop.

  27. Enchanted the beav , You still have it.

  28. Coming up soon (if I find proper motivation) – Ned’s Faux Pas Are Coming To Town.

  29. JhallWally says:

Well, we got a pony for Christmas (Kemp signing) so you know there is going to be some manure (Ellis, Treanor, etc…).

  30. JhallWally says:

    Let’s Go Kersh!! Clap…Clap

Good Luck to Kersh. You should be getting your Cy Young soon!!

  31. So according to mlbtraderumors.com, Frank’s plan is to sell the stadium and the team, BUT keep the parking lot to himself. Boy, didn’t see that coming.

    :-s

    • JhallWally says:

Franks a cockroach. Not gonna be easy to totally eradicate him. I can’t see the franchise bringing the sale price he needs without the land and parking lots however.

If he keeps the parking lots, then he also needs to keep the liability for the Stowe lawsuit as well.

      • The unknown is that the stadium has X value, which is set in stone. The variable in this equation is the land sorrounding the stadium. The parking lots, the mountains, etc could be heavily valued if they are developed properly, the parking structures, possible stadium expansion or remodeling/renovations. Also, the emergence of possible future transit lines or subway rails under the stadium, as well as maybe a new stadium if all else fails. That’s why the importance of the parking lot being sold together with the stadium and team is essential. And Frank knows that. He knows what he can do on the land and what he can charge and make outta the land alone.

        • JhallWally says:

Wouldn’t it be great if the new owner bought the team and moved them to a new downtown stadium. LOL!!!

I could live with forsaking the Dodger Stadium tradition to really stick it to Frank!!!

          • Downtown would be crazy. What I’m looking for is for the IRS, FBI and EPA coming in and arresting Frank on embezzelment, tax evasion and find out that under the land of Dodger Stadium, there’s nuclear waste. That would be a nice kick in his ass. Facing criminal charges and him not being able to say a word because, he owns, solely, his beloved parking lots. LOL.

          • 32and53fan says:

That would fall right into McCourt’s plan. I think he just wants to develop the parking lot with luxury residential and commercial buildings.

I don’t think the sale is possible without including everything that was included when McCourt bought the team.

If somehow, he is allowed to keep the parking lot, I would encourage a permanent boycott.

          • JhallWally says:

I have to agree. I don’t think the franchise sells for $1B+ without the land, parking lots, and stadium.

  32. messagebear says:

I’m actually totally disenchanted with the MLB stance in this bankruptcy proceedings. They have shown NO BALLS whatsoever in this whole fiasco. Why am I not surprised – after all Selig is in charge. I think he and probably the other owners are afraid to really litigate the baseball rules and to step up to enforce them. Any agreement with Frank is ludicrous, because he’ll just sidestep the issues he wants and will keep the lawsuits going forever. Why did MLB even step up with the $150 million financing? Should have left Frank with the higher interest cost plan. Why save him money?
I even think the negotiated contract with Matt is just a big distraction by Frank. Unless there’s an ironclad no trade clause, what makes you think Frank won’t convert that contract to some cash for himself by dealing Matt somewhere else after the fact. Besides, as long as he’s in bankruptcy, what’s to prevent Frank from asking the bankruptcy court to negate that no trade clause?

    • Well, to answer your question about why they financed Frank instead of allowing him to grow deeper in debt was, because of that same fact. Had he borrowed, he would of taken it out of the Dodgers collateral, whatever little remained. At the time, he had run out of money to pay the players and workers, paychecks were bouncing higher than superballs, and there was the entire ticket sale freefall. Another reason why Bud Selig gave him a better discount was because of the lawsuit Frank put against MLB. Had Bud not done so, Frank would of had a case vs. MLB on why they aren’t helping, giving favoritism to the Mets over Dodgers. In a way, it gave Frank leverage to say, they want me to pay, I’m in bankruptcy, and yet, they are undermining me.

  33. CLAYTON WINSS CY YOUNGGG….

  34. JhallWally says:

    Kersh Wins!!! Wah-Hoo!!!

The writers got it right. He certainly deserved it. Should have been unanimous in my opinion, but, with the Philly and San Diego writers in the mix, that wasn’t likely. And, Halliday was damn good.

  35. trublu4ever says:

Way to go Kersh! So glad for you and for us,, the fans who got to watch you pitch!

  36. selltheteam says:

Well deserved award for Clayton. He got 27 out of 32 first place votes.

  37. So we swept the Gold Gloves, Silver Sluggers, and MVP and Cy Young award, in a bad team year.

Wait, MVP is up next. Hmn, put it in the bag.

    • selltheteam says:

Should be in the bag. All Kemp did in 2011 was:

      1. Contended for the Triple Crown up to the couple games
      2. Led the league in HRs and RBIs
      3. Came very very close to joining the 40/40 club (without PEDs)
      4. Played superior defense in center field including 11 assists

      • Everyone on the West Coast knows that Kemp did everything but move Earth Heaven and Hell, its those damn East Coast people that are in bed by the time that a great offensive output is on. Besides, there’s always those that will say Braun, but he had a full lineup to help him, and the Phillies, with Howard and the crying Hawaaiin, and their stupid people thinking that it all starts and ends with them. But to true fans, we know the Kemp is this years MVP.

  38. 32and53fan says:

A great accomplishment! At this stage of his career, he is way ahead of 32and53. I hope he can keep it up without major injuries and pitch in LA for a dozen or more years. He would be a cinch for HOF if that happens.

  39. Hi Everybody
Congrats to Kershaw a well deserved winner of the CY Young award. Here’s to many more.

  40. Clayton and Kemp are about the only two bright spots this team has. My congrats to him. Honestly with the offense and bullpen we had to start the year, no matter how well he pitched I figured a 13-12, 14-13 season was in order for him.

It would be nice to see what both he and Kemp could do if actually surrounded by ML talent.

    Unfortunately we may never know.

    • JhallWally says:

I don’t look for Ellis, Rivera, and Treanor to make much of an impact. Gonna come down to Billz, Ethier, Loney, and Uribe having much better seasons than last year to make a run at the playoffs. Especially Billz if we don’t get a real #2 starter.

      • I look for Billz and Ethier to be hanging on by a thread coming into the season. Billz is the missing link to this rotation. Without him, we have a #1, and #4, #3, #5 pitchers. With him on game, we could have, finally, a bonafide #2. Kuroda looks to be waining about getting a huge contract, and this team can’t afford multiple crap years (Lilly, Uribe).

      • Hi OTD
I think Ethier & Bilz have to come out of the box strong, they have to show their best early in the season. It’s up to Ethier to prove he’s back to form now that he’s had surgery on his knee. Loney has to show that this years 2nd half wasn’t a fluke. Uribe & Rivera have to make Colletti look good if that’s at all possible.
Here’s hoping Kuroda decides to return and makes up his mind soon. Everybody else has to perform at their best. Last year’s 2nd half showed we have a one of the best teams, now they just have to put two good halves together.

  41. JhallWally says:

And what the hell is up with Kuroda?!! Saying he wants to wait and see if he thinks the Dodgers will be capable of making a WS run before he commits. Wants to play for a contender. He could have had a great shot if he would have accepted the trade to the Red Sux. I think they would have made the playoffs with him.
I think his agent is working that angle to drive the price up for his services.

He can pound Kimchi up his ass!!!

Colletti said the issue with him returning is half Kuroda and half Dodgers. He implied that he might not have the money needed to re-sign Kuroda unless Hiroki were to take a huge cut from his 2011 contract.

      • JhallWally says:

Nedcompoop should have addressed the pitching before shelling out the bucks for the likes of Rivera, Ellis, and Treanor. Those type/level of players can be had in Feb and March and usually for a lot less money.
It is setting up for another bad 3 year back loaded deal for a mediocre starting pitcher. Like Harang for 3/22. Paid 4/8/10.

        • I’m surprised Ned hasn’t spoken to Buerhle yet, and is instead looking at Harang. Well, getting Buerhle and Harang would still comand a lower pay than it would take to sign Kuroda on a one year deal.

          Kuroda $13 mil
          Harang $ 8 mil
          Buerhle $ 10 mil

          • JhallWally says:

Good point. Unfortunately with Nedcompoop, we will end up overpaying the likes of Capuano or Francis and end up really screwed.

          • Wasn’t Capuano a reliever before?
Wasn’t Francis the former Rockies ACE?
Wasn’t Aaron Cook a #2 for the Rockies?
Wasn’t Chris Young the former ACE of the Padres?
Wasn’t Zack Duke the former ACE of the Pirates?
Wasn’t Paul Maholm the former ACE after Duke?

All these people are formers, but what we need is currents. Ned will get one of these and probably sign one of the others to a minor league contract with an invite.

These are the best FA pitchers this off-season, and most are hurt or in decline. Ned’s favorites

            R. Oswalt
            E. Jackson
            B. Chen
            K. Millwood
            D. Willis
            B. Sheets
            E. Bedard
            R. Harden
            A. Wainwright
            B. Webb
            C. Capuano
            J. Francis
            A. Cook
            C. Young
            Z. Duke
            P. Maholm

      • Thing is Kuroda preaches loyalty and such, yet is turning out to be just like any other player. He negated a good trade to the Red Sux, which ultimately led to Ned trading away Tray for Federowicz. He’s already made some $40 mil or so, and NOW wants to see what he’s worth to the team. Heck, he knows how much he means to the team, the fans, and the Chinese community. He is our #2 or #3 pitcher, and yet, wants to see if we can be a contender. Hello, earth to Kuroda, if we don’t have you on board, how the fucking hell are we gonna be a contender. You preached loyalty and such, and now your preaching dollars in bunches.

  42. JhallWally says:

We wouldn’t be in such a bind if Nedcompoop hadn’t piled up so much dead money for Manny, Andruw, Phew, Furcal, Uribe, and Grrrear. That’s around $30M gone right off the top. And the bastard still has a job. Geez!!!

  43. vl4eccjr says:

Congrats to Kershaw! Was there ever a doubt after taking the triple crown?
27 of 32 votes, with Kennedy coming in 4th behind Halladay & Lee?!
I don’t know how these five writers can look at themselves in the mirror.
Now we return to the waiting game on the MVP vote. . .

  44. JhallWally says:

Here’s a little tip Ned. If you are going to overpay for a player, at least make it a true impact player. No one gets real upset if you are overpaying a little for a productive player that actually contributes and helps you make the playoffs. Overpaying old broken down has been/never were players that aren’t going to add wins is not getting it done. I hasn’t worked in the past, and it will not work going forward. Can’t wait until your gone Ned!!!!

  45. Funny… Frank’s agreed to sell, our players win all kinds of awards, Kemp re-signs for 8 years – and there’s still no joy in our Mudville. Why is that?

  46. lbirken says:

Why? Maybe the mood will change when we no longer have Frank McCourt representing the Los Angeles Dodgers.

  47. lbirken says:

Individual awards are great and well deserved by the people who win them. We can be proud if Dodger players win these types of awards, and I am happy for Kersh and will be for Kemp if he wins the MVP. I will be much happier when and if the Dodgers get back to what they used to be and that was competing year in and out for a championship.

  48. DodgerZona says:

Don’t trust him. “I’m staying” translates to “…as owner.” He’s tricking us. Watch…..McBroke says he’s staying in LA even after new ownership

Some guy comments that Frank and mlb are lying about this whole Dodgers getting sold

So my ? to all….Are we being tricked?

I hope not…I like all of you want this clown out and the sooner the better

Thanks and i hope all of you are doing well

  49. Happy to see Kershaw won the Cy Young.

In other news… the Houston Astros will no longer be playing baseball after 2012…

  50. trublu4ever says:

Well…it’s official…Matty signed up for a life sentence! Hope we do something to help you out.

    • JhallWally says:

Just like us Tru…. This is a great start in helping us out. LOL!!

When Frank and Ned are finally gone, that will truely be the start of the Dodgers return to our once proud heritage. It can’t come soon enough for me.

  51. You know what’s beyond funny, Doumit agreed to a 1 yr deal w/ the Twins for $3 mil, and yet, its that very amount that he turned down from the Dodgers. What’s more interesting is that in Minesota, he’ll be the backup and DH, where as in LA, he could of been a Catcher, 1B, OF, Bench, 3B player.

I bet he was like ohh shitt, what did I do in turning down that offer.
    LOL.

    • selltheteam says:

He’s like us. He doesn’t want to play for Frank and Ned. Doesn’t believe the promise that they will be gone for 2012. So he signs a 1 year deal with the Twins. Then, after Frankie & Neddie are gone, he can sign with the Dodgers for 2013. 🙂

    • JhallWally says:

Good point Yung. If we signed him at $3M he would have been the starting catcher. He’s got some pop in his bat, but his defense is terrible. At least now Ellis will get a chance to start and show what he can do. I think he will prove more than adequate with his defense and OBP. I like it that he has worked with all our young pitchers on their way up and I think we will be depending on those young pitchers going forward.

  52. By popular demand. Perry Como, Santa Claus is Coming To Town:

NED’S FAUX PAS ARE COMING TO TOWN

    Who’s gonna strike out?
    Who’ll hit a pop fly?
    No reason t’shout
    I’m telling you why
Ned’s faux pas are coming to town

    He’s made out his list
    And altered it twice
    Got us old men
    Gonna roll the ol’ dice
Ned’s faux pas are coming to town

    He gets Treanor for catchin’
    And Ellis who can’t rake
Rivera’ll be more bad than good
Now Harang? Oh for God’s sake!

    Oh, he’s signin’ up vets
    Just like they’re a prize
    That’s all we get
    4th place no surprise
Ned’s faux pas are coming to town

  53. JhallWally says:

BRAVO!!! Neddy got run over by a PVL.

  54. lbirken says:

Congrats to the Dodgers and Kemp for taking care of business. The Dodgers finally have that superstar we have all been saying has been absent for so long and he wants to be here. My holidy wish for Matt is to stay focused, stay hungry and more importantly, stay healthy. My holiday wish for Frank is to stay away.

  55. trublu4ever says:

According to the LA Times, it looks like the bankrupt Dodgers will be unable to sign Kuroda..leaving holes in the rotation. Ya think! 😉

    • trublu4ever says:

…unless Kersh can pitch everyday, we have NO roation!

    • JhallWally says:

We would have been better off going with Sands and Sellers and signing Kuroda, than jumping the gun and spending the money on Rivera and Ellis. Way to go Ned!!!

      • Ned’s the master of disaster. Kuroda is a
difference maker in the rotation. Ellis and Rivera are not on the field. So, who does Ned sign to overblown contracts right away and not have enough money left over for Kuroda? Plain and simple, the guy doesn’t know shit. Even after 6 years he still doesn’t know shit.

BTW, good to see you and a couple others slumming with me on Gurnick’s blog. As you can tell, I specialize in pissing off the homers.

        • JhallWally says:

LOL!! Well, at least the end of Frank and Furter is in sight.

I love it when you put the Full Beaver on those schmucks and Gurnick. There are a handful of good commenters over there mixed in with the riff raff.

          • trublu4ever says:

Just wondering if Bear has discovered Gurnick ? 🙂

          • lbirken says:

What is the link to Gurnick’s blog?

          • Pretty much any story on the Dodgers home page will get you to Gurnick’s blog birk. Just scroll to the bottom where the comments are. Like Wally said, there are some very good commentors, but there’s an awful lot of Ned apologists and just plain homers that like to get snide when you say something not in goosestep with their blue world.

          • lbirken says:

I didn’t realize that was the blog you have been referring to from time to time. I have looked at those comments and for the most part, I find them unreadable as compared to what we do here and what we did on ITD.

  56. lbirken says:

The Kuroda situation is interesting and troubling at the same time. Remember, Ned tried to trade Kuroda but Kuroda had a no trade clause in his contract (who was responsible for that?). While Huroki got all sorts of pats on the back for staying loyal to the Dodgers and his desire to finish the season in a Dodger uniform, Ned then goes and trades T. Robinson instead for what appears at the moment as a minor league catcher. Had Kuroda accepted the trade, the Dodgers probably still have Robinson. At the time we were told Kuroda was considering possible retirement or going back to Japan. Clearly, Ned did not want to trade Kuroda but probably knew there would an issue resigning Kuroda even if he did not know for sure the reason. Did Hiroki play Ned?

    • JhallWally says:

I think they are playing each other. The Dodgers know Kuroda wants to stay in LA with his home and family very happy there. I think the Dodgers want to lowball him and pay less than the $12M he got last year. Kuroda and his agent are calling their bluff. I look for them to sign him for $12-13M paid 7/3/2-3. I would rather see them do a one year deal with Kuroda to keep Ned from doing another shitty 3 year deal with a marginal pitcher. And in another year, heaven help us, Ned will be gone.

    • nedisajerk says:

Speaking of no trade clause I can’t believe Kemp doesn’t have one lol.

    • HI OTD
it really is a surprising development with Kuroda, I don’t think anyone anticipated this happening. I feel that Kuroda is right not to accept a cut in salary. This is absolutely terrible. Needless to say, because we all know that Kuroda is a much better pitcher than his record may indicate. The Dodgers owe him a handful of runs as they failed to support him in most of his games. I agree that there is a game being played here and I think it’s Colletti that’s playing it.

  57. messagebear says:

Well, if Matt didn’t insist on and get a no trade clause, that only means that Frank figures he’s got a bankable $20 to $30 million cash in tradeable value for him whenever he needs it. Just wait and see it happen as long as all these new legal manuevers continue. I really have no faith in Frank or MLB resolving anything.

  58. trublu4ever says:

Just wondering what you guys think about Verlander winning both the Cy Young and MVP?

  59. messagebear says:

Guess it is a very rare happening. Since I don’t follow the AL very much, I have to assume that they did not have an overwhelming bat that would normally capture the MVP. I’m OK with Verlander, since he pretty much individually made the Tigers’ season.

  60. If he truly was an MVP, and IMHO he was, then it’s cool.

  61. It happens some times. The majority of the voter saw it that way.

  62. Nellyjune says:

I really do see the argument both ways, and I do believe all the players mentioned did deserve a shot at the award. I don’t think Justin thought he would get the award seeing how he had already gotten the Cy Yound Award. He seemed just as shocked as the experts did. When he was asked about the possibility during his interviews after winning the Cy Young, he said if the pitcher is having a bad day, there’s a 90% chance, the team won’t win. I think the Dodgers position players saw alot of that first hand this past season.

  63. dodgereric says:

We’re going to know in about 2 1/2 hours, but here’s to Matt Kemp either way it goes. Being a Dodger fan makes me horribly prejudiced, but being Most Valuable is not exclusive to being on the team with the best record. You can be Most Valuable and still be on a bad team.

Forget all the near-Triple Crown and near-40/40 numbers. WAR (Wins Over Replacement) shows just how valuable you are:

    Matt Kemp – 10.0 – #1 in MLB
Ryan Braun – 7.7 – #3 in MLB (Jose Bautista of Toronto is #2)

You da man, Matt. Case closed (in my mind, anyway)

    • trublu4ever says:

Me too! But, I have a feeling those idiot voters will give it to Braun. I pray I am wrong because, as you say, dodgereric, Matty deserves it!

  64. trublu4ever says:

    Bullshit!

  65. It’s not so rare that the voters got it wrong – and in this case, they definitely did. But Matt is still OUR MVP no matter what!

  66. vl4eccjr says:

20 of 32 votes is not even close in voting! This smells like Selig had a hand in this! Matt had better overall numbers, played in more games, and didn’t have the likes of fat boy Fielder batting behind him. If he played in Miller park, he would have had 50 HR’s!
    Kemp was robbed!!!!

  67. DodgerZona says:

BS….Kemp should of won MVP hands down

  68. How did 6 people vote Kemp 3rd?

  69. Hi Everybody
I had a feeling that the Dodgers not making the postseason would work against Matt, so I made sure that I wouldn’t raise my hopes to high. But as Dodger fans we all should be proud of his achievements.

  70. JhallWally says:

Bummer!! Not a big surprise however given how much stock the voters put into the recipients team making the playoffs or contending.

They should just call it the “Most Vote Playoffs” award.

    • I truly believe the vote was in before the postseason started and after it was known who was in it. Although the Cards and Rays cut it pretty close.
I mean I don’t believe that anything that happen in the postseason had any effect on the voting.
The Dodgers were well out of it at the time of the voting. At least we are to understand that. The only thing to do is congratulate the winner.

      • JhallWally says:

My statement does not imply in any way that what happened IN the playoffs had any effect on the voting. I merely stated that the MVP vote is highly influenced by the candidates team making it to the playoffs. This is a known and well documented fact.

  71. Matt is about to go into Super Beast Mode. He’s talking 50/50 for next season.

    • selltheteam says:

“I’m going to go 50-50 next year,” he said. “I’m telling you, y’all created a monster. I’m about to get back in the weight room super tough so I can be as strong as I was last year. … Forty-forty is tough, so 50-50 will be even tougher, but anything can happen. I have to set my limits high so I can try to get to them as much as I can. I’m going to try for 50-50, which has never been done.

“I’m serious. If I don’t [get there], it means I let y’all down and lied to you, and I don’t like being a liar. I know y’all are over there thinking I’m crazy, but hey, I’m trying to take it to another level.”

      http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/story/_/id/7270316/los-angeles-dodgers-matt-kemp-makes-bold-prediction-2012-50-50

  72. lbirken says:

Let’s hope Matt means what he says about using the motivation for not winning the MVP to come back even stronger next season. I do find it a bit refreshing he does seem to care. No doubt Matt was deserving but not being on a playoff contender hurt. In any event, he knows he is the MVP to Dodger fans.

  73. lbirken says:

The Cy Young and MVP awards continue to have these unwritten rules or guidelines that get a great deal of discussion. There are no rules preventing a pitcher from being considered MVP just as there are no stipulations that voters can only pick an MVP candidate from a winning team or playoff contender. Yet these two subjects still get a lot of attention and it does seem as if at least some of the voters do vote as if these rules did apply.

    • I don’t think there are any rules, it’s just the way the voter feels.
Some of them, (not all), but probably most of them simply eliminate players that are on teams that didn’t make the postseason. The way I understand it, it shouldn’t be based on who is the best player in the league but who was the most responsible for their team’s accomplishment, What player helped his team the most. Most voters (not all) feel that this only involves teams making the postseason and this includes all players, including pitchers. At least that’s the way I think it is.

When was the last time you ever seen a Giants fans defend a Dodgers players winning an award?

    • Interesting posts there, Shad. Thanks!

    • The Giant fan is right, too bad most eligible voters don’t feel the same way. Too many take the final standings into consideration.
It seems only those that bring their teams to the final 8 are qualified. I personally think that Kemp was by far more needed by the Dodgers than Braun was by the Brewers but apparently he didn’t qualify.

    • Nellyjune says:

Shad – Even the Giants fans in my house thought Matt should have gotten MVP. And I being a Dodger fan have defended the Giants more times than I would like to claim.
      .
And if the playoffs had anything to do with the voting, then why not vote Pujols again? He had pretty good numbers for a player who was expected to be on the DL for six weeks, and then proceeded to help bring home a World Series ring for the Cardinals. That being said, the playoffs shouldn’t have had anything to do with it.

      • Hi Everybody
No Nellyjune the playoffs had nothing to do with the MLB vote. The vote was taken at the end of the regular season. At least I hope it was. That’s what they tell us. Braun won because the Brewers made it to the postseason, IMO.

        • I meant the MVP vote.

          • Nellyjune says:

I meant to say post-season as well when I made that statement. Even one of our own Dodger writers said that was his reason was because the Brewers made it to the post-season.

          • trublu4ever says:

You’re right about that, Nellyjune. They did vote because the Brewers went to the playoffs. I think it’s a total crock. If Matt won a gold glove and silver slugger award….plus playing every game…and, having pretty shitty linenup around him…he deserved the MVP…plain & simple!

  75. Nellyjune says:

    bleh, bleh and bleh!!!

  76. lbirken says:

Is there no end to the soap opera drama that the potential sale of the Dodgers is approaching? No offense to Joe Torre or Peter O’Malley but the Dodgers need a bold new leadership that is committed to winning and committed to the long haul. It cannot be someone or some organization that has any any purpose for owning the Dodgers other than to restore the organization to the luster everyone talks about and is financially sound enough to do it in a fiscally responsible way. Not an easy task, to be sure.

  77. trublu4ever says:

According to the LA Times….The Hershiser-Garvey group has enough backing to purchase the Dodgers

  78. So we have father time and the father of everything else from LA to SD ready to bid on the Dodgers.

    Oh the humanity…

  79. We’ve been reading that Kemp has been motivated to do even better next year. Well I hope the team has also been motivated to do better. If Kemp wants the MVP next year he needs help from the team. .500 won’t do it.

  80. Nellyjune says:

Fox is thinking it’s a good idea that MLB doesn’t let Frank keep the parking lots. Well, no shit!! Everybody except Frank knows that! Geez!!

    • I have to admit that I didn’t know that the parking lots weren’t for sale McCourt is shrewder than I thought. It seems all MLB wanted was for McCourt to agree to sell the team, so everybody but Fox is working hand in hand.

  81. trublu4ever says:

Happy Thanksgiving to my OTD family.

  82. JhallWally says:

  83. Wishing all my blogmates here a very Happy Thanksgiving.

  84. Happy Thanks giving everybody.

  85. Nellyjune says:

I hope everyone had a fabulous Thanksgiving!!

  86. Hi Everybody
When someone asked,”Who wants a turkey leg?” My experience to me to say ‘Me”. and I’m glad I did. Had a great thanksgiving I hope everyone did.

  87. Nellyjune says:

Sorry about your Buckeyes Jhall!!! Good game though 🙂

  88. JhallWally says:

🙂 Thanks Nelly. Tough year for my Bucks. We’ll get’em next year. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

    • Nellyjune says:

I am sure they will be back in full strength next year…….just as USC is proving they will be back ready for a fight as well. My Thanksgiving week was great!!! I hope yours was good too 🙂

  89. Nellyjune says:

Well, this will solve the pitching issue….. This just in from the twitter wire…
    .
he Dodgers have signed reliever Wil Ledezma to a minor-league deal, according to Venezuelan outlet El Universal (Spanish link). A source confirmed the signing to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com (via Twitter).
    .
I know you are all just jumping for joy at this signing – LOL!!!

  90. Hi Everybody
IMO The Dodgers are contenders and the turning point, albeit late for 2011, came in the 2nd half. The future looks bright and it all depends on the new ownership. I think the number 1 problem under Frank & Jamie McCourt was that not enough money that the team made was directed towards improving the team. We need an owner that will make money and use more of it to make the team better. I know we all know this but it leaves very little reason to be negative. Better days are coming.

    • Nellyjune says:

I think we will all be rejoicing once Frank signs on the dotted line that he is no longer the owner. I think right now the problem is Ned is still making decisions on the composition of the team. So, when Frank and Ned are both gone, I think we will see a much different team and how it is operated, and THAT will be the most positive thing of all!!
      .
I don’t think the signing of Lidezma was bad. I just think we are going to be missing out on the starting pitching we really do need the longer Frank is the owner.

  91. selltheteam says:

This pitching change will really hurt us….not!

Jonathan Broxton not returning to the Dodgers, agent says
    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/dodgers/2011/11/jonathan-broxton-not-returning-to-the-dodgers-agent-says.html

  92. JhallWally says:

    Good-Byyyyyyyyyyyyye Johnny!!

Those “Here’s Johnny to Sammy Says” when he was setting up for Saito were alot of fun.

Gonna be interesting to see what he has left in the tank. Perhaps a change of scenery, healthy elbow, and a manager not named Torre will help him get his mojo back.

Good luck going forward, unless you happen to end up in the NL West or are playing the Dodgers.

    • selltheteam says:

Johnny might want to lose a little weight and show up to spring training in shape.

      • JhallWally says:

Definately!! I hope Uribe takes your advice!! Haven’t heard anything about his re-hab. I’m very curious to see what kind of shape he shows up to Spring Training in. If he shows up like Andruw Jones, we’re totally screwed.

    • In a way, its surprising Ned didn’t sign Brox right away. He had most of Ned’s qualifications:

      1. Overweight
      2. Hurt
      3. Hasn’t had a good season since 2009
      4. Is familiar with him

Unfortunately it was probably that all important #5. Ex-Gnat.

I can see a few teams lining up to give him a minor league contract with an invite to ST, but anything more than that and they should have their head examined. I’m thinking the agent is exaggerating just a tad.

  93. JhallWally says:

Good luck XPaul. Unless you sign with the G’aints or Cards.

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/pirates-release-xavier-paul.html

  94. Hi Everybody
Broxton went down at the right time. The right time for Guerra and Jansen. He’ll either be a closer or a set man and we don’t seem to have any openings.

  95. lbirken says:

So Broxton won’t be returning to the Dodgers. No big surprise there. Broxton just was not the same after that Yankee game meltdown. I was there that day and it was sad watching him try so hard and throw so many pitches. I wish Jonathan well and choose to remember the excitement he created when he came into a game in the 9th inning when things were going well (similar to Gagne) rather than the not so good times.

I find this love affair with Paul, DeWitt and others that the Dodgers have traded away interesting. I do understand liking these players and wanting them to do well. And I do understand the arguments made that the Dodgers seldom got much in return or replaced them with anyone much better. All of that is hindsight. The fact is none of these players has yet to become an impact player for another organization. Maybe someday one of them will and if so, good for them. I know many of you will bring up Carlos Santana but I still maintain at the time he was traded there was little chance he would ever be a starter with the Dodgers. So while we always seem to find fault with the way the Dodgers evaluate talent, the fact is other teams make the same type of decisions as well.

    • I often wonder if Broxton was effected by that game he pitched against the Yankees, if he blamed himself, like many Dodger fans did. Personally I gave credit to the Yankee lineup that showed patience and selectivity at the plate. I think that discipline is what did him in. Broxton should’ve brushed it off with a “Oh Well that was the Yankees”.

    • Hi Everybody at OTD
Thanks for the update Dodgereric, I’m kind of glad to see this issue over with. I wish Broxton luck and more confidence, which I feel he needs to become successful again. Maybe the change will help him out. I’m just waiting to see this appear on the website.

  96. So Broxton reaches a 1 yr deal with the Royals. Good for him, even better for Royals. If he does fall back into his old self, he’ll be a hell of a set-up man for Joakim Soria. That bullpen is looking good, and that young lineup, getting better.

  97. Rumors abound that Reds are shoppin Yonder Alonso, and are looking for a good #2 pitcher. Wouldn’t Chad fit the bill perfectly, maybe throw in a Withrow or something and get a young power hitting 1B/LF prospect that would free up more money to allocate it elsewhere, and just go out and sign 2 FA pitchers or maybe just get Kuroda back finally.

I’m glad Brox found a new home. You watch, he will be great and, will prove once again, that Honeycutt & his staff stinks!

  100. grizzy says:

Good luck, Brox. You’ll need it.

  101. messagebear says:

With Jansen and Guerra we hopefully won’t miss a beat or Broxton for that matter. What’s always disconcerting is how Brox fell apart from such a bright forecast future. I’ve blamed his overweight and lack of conditioning for years, but you really also have to blame the Honeycutts and the organization for letting the fat Broxtons, Joneses, and the third baseman that we still have with us to gorge themselves like playing major league ball was a Vegas buffet line. I hope somebody in KC has the wherewithall to turn Brox around. I think he could still have a great deal of petential, and I hope Brox can reclaim it. Good Luck to you!!!

  102. Happy birthday to Scully and I understand it’s also Ross Porter’s birthday so a happy one to him also. Wow Vin’s 84, makes me feel like a real youngster.

Glad Jonathan found a home!! Good luck Brox!!

Frank and Ned are both absolutely worthless. I know………..but I just had to say it again.

      • trublu4ever says:

And, to make matters worse…Neddie is going to sign old-timer Adam Kennedy! WTF……no money to extend Kersh or Dre but, plenty to waste on shit!!!!

    • Nellyjune says:

What got me about the article….among many things, was Ned was actually upset he couldn’t offer a contract to Macdougal. Did he not watch any Dodger games last season? I know…………but I had to ask – lol!!

  104. What does Johnny say?

    Fu-Q Ned!!!

  105. DodgerZona says:

Best me to it Tru……Adam Kennedy lol……Typical Ned move….I can’t wait for the day till Ned and McScumbag are gone

  106. DodgerZona says:

Beat me to it Tru lol

  107. grizzy says:

Miles did a good job, so he goes out and gets someone else.

  108. DodgerZona says:

Well that’s Old Ned for ya

  109. trublu4ever says:

Looks like Bobby Valentine is going to be the next Red Sox skipper.

  110. Ned’s the only GM I know of in any sport that intentionally tries to go out and make his team older. Not better, just older.

  111. Gurnick’s blog: Henry Aaron in Dodgers bidding?

Are we talking as an owner or a player?

I better go check with Ned…

  112. dodgereric says:

Oh, and we missed out again. For years (can’t remember if I’ve mentioned it here before) I’ve been wanting Bobby Valentine to manage the Dodgers. Call him what you will, but I’d trade Mattingly and Torre together with most of Ned’s acquisitions for the rights to put him in Dodger Blue again. I’d even tear Lasorda’s #2 off the wall so he could wear it again. It will be interesting to see if the modern player’s egos will allow him to do what he can do.

Hmm, it just dawned on me: Given Lasorda’s affection for Valentine, I wonder if he wore it for him? Or was it the other way around?

    From Bill Shaikin…
Bankruptcy court sets hearing dates for Dodgers case through June 20,2012. Team sale is still expected to close April 30.

  114. trublu4ever says:

Well, it’s official…Adam Kennedy is a Dodger at the mere cost of $800k. Shall we order the champagne for our celebration on a fantastic year 😉

  115. lbirken says:

I doubt Ned intentionally tries to mess up the Dodgers but it would be interesting to hear him talk about his philosophy on building a team. He has always shown a preference for experience, especially if it comes at a bargain price. Not sure what intrigued him about Kennedy.

    • trublu4ever says:

      ……his cheap price 😉

    • nellyjune says:

Hasn’t Tampa Bay, and even the D-Backs this past season, taught him that it’s not always about age and experience? We tried to tell him years ago that we wanted the kids to play and were willing to wait it out a couple years for them to come into their own, which would have been last season or maybe even this coming season. If he only allowed the kids play back then, we may not be having this discussion now. Well…….we probably would…. – lol!!!…..it’s Ned we are talking about 🙂
      .
It’s all hindsight about what might have been, but it’s still makes me wonder.

  116. DodgerZona says:

Ned likes his players like he likes his wine, aged and nicely fermented.

Larry King, the legendary talk-show host who has a small stake in one of the investment groups seeking to buy the Los Angeles Dodgers, ripped outgoing Dodgers owner Frank McCourt during an interview with 710 ESPN’s Steve Mason and John Ireland on Wednesday, saying McCourt has “destroyed” the storied franchise.

CNN Legendary talkshow host Larry King calls Steve and John to talk about possibly buying the Dodgers with the Dennis Gilbert Group.

“He has destroyed this team, and it is just sad to me to see what has happened to it,” said King, who is part of a group headed by Chicago White Sox executive and Beverly Hills insurance agent Dennis Gilbert.

King, a longtime Dodgers season-ticket holder and a visible presence in the Dugout Club seats at many home games, said McCourt’s biggest failure was that he became too enamored of the trappings of being the owner of the club at the expense of his responsibility to put a competitive team on the field.

“I think Frank got caught up in the L.A. aspect of the life,” King said. “The Dodgers became secondary to the … lifestyle of being Frank McCourt, Dodger owner. He liked that image of walking into a room. Basically, he is a nice guy, I don’t think he is an owner. I just don’t think he is cut out to own a baseball team. He is cut out to be a real estate guy who does deals. He is a deal guy … .

“I am a fan. I’m paying over $300 a seat for every game, I have six seats. I’m putting this money into the team, I hope they do well. I would like to see the owner do well. But instead of bidding for the top free agents, he’s buying another house. & If I run into Frank, I’m kind, I smile and I say hello, and he says hello. He has been to my house for dinner when he first got the team. But & he’s not cut out to be an owner, and I think the league made a mistake, frankly, in giving him the franchise.”

King, who also was part of a Gilbert-led group that tried to buy the Texas Rangers when that club was in bankruptcy more than a year ago, confirmed that his financial stake in the group is comparatively small. The primary backing for the group comes from Jason Reese and Randy Wooster, two top executives with Imperial Capital, a Los Angeles-based investment bank.

King, who said he has been a Dodgers fan since his uncle took him to his first Brooklyn Dodgers game at Ebbets Field in 1943, added that improvements to 50-year-old Dodger Stadium should be first on the new owner’s list of priorities.

“It is still a great stadium, but it needs work,” he said. “I want to see the Dodgers come first. If we own the team today, I think we should go into hock to try to get anybody we can get that is at the top of that [free-agent] list,” including, he added, Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder.

“If the club costs a billion, you’re going to have to put another hundred, $200 million into this, because this is a franchise that demands a winner. This is L.A. This is not some small little hick town. This is L.A., and L.A. deserves the best. I think that should be our goal.”

  118. koufax1963 says:

I think an owner of an MLB franchise should also be a fan of MLB, if they are a fan of the team they bought even better! The owner should be financially secure, the team should be a serious hobby, not a source of income. I have no problem with the Gilbert group, with Larry King, as he has proven to be a loyal Fan, and could influence proper choices, which the Dodgers have not had an owner do in too long of a time!

Looks like he’s coming off a bender. We know he doesn’t act like a GM, but is it too much to ask that he at least look like one?
