Down to the Wire

In another of one of those “there is no excuse for that” kind of games, the Dodgers took us on a roller coaster of emotions ride last night, losing in ten innings 7-6 after leading 6-1 going into the bottom of the 10th with two outs and the bases empty.  It was one of those losses where I am completely fed up, want to shut off the laptop, and put some mindless drivel on the DVR.  Alas, there are deadlines to meet and another OTD post must be published.

Prince Fielder decided to have his first three home run game yesterday, tying Matt Kemp for the league lead.  Hopefully, Kemp will reciprocate and come up with a couple of his own today.  Accomplishing that difficult, but not impossible feat, would put Kemp in the elusive 40/40 club and make him number two behind Tommy Davis for the most RBIs in a season by a Los Angeles Dodger.

Ted Lilly is on the mound tonight for the last game of the season.

This Day in Dodgers History

September 28, 1997 – With his 40th home runs, catcher Mike Piazza sets a single season Los Angeles Dodger record. Duke Snider holds the franchise record slugging 43 round-trippers for Brooklyn in 1956.

  1. To end the season in a unfitting way, the Dodgers were sued by Fox for breach of contract, making that at least 5 different cases against Frank and the team..Secondly, Ned made it near official in saying that the entire coaching staff will be back (ugh..booo…Honeycutt), and most importantly, less than 24 hrs after saying that Guerra and Jansen are near locks for the 8th and 9th innings, Guerra gives up the win in epic failure fashion.

Here’s to one final hoorah today, and to a hopefully more promising off-season.

PS-Please don’t trade away any prospects Ned. No more trading away top tier prospects (Santana).

    PS2- Sign Matt NOWW!!!

I’d rather had Troncoso in there or maybe we should’ve left Lindblom (Donny did let him bat 1 time before but why not this time?) and please no more Miles at 3rd bases. Miles has made 10 errors this season and 8 of those came at 3rd. Miles only had 21 games at 3rd bases before this season. How in the hell do you not have Sellers at 3rd when you just PH for Lindblom? Sellers should’ve been at 3rd or shift Carroll to 3rd and Miles at 2nd. Guerra never gave up a hit with the bases loaded and just our luck that those costly mistake from Hawksworth/Miles cost us the game.

Well Lindblom did face 1 batter on 6 pitches in the 1st game and had 13 in this game and I bet that he could’ve finish this one on his own. He has used him 2 innings before why not this time? I know last night would’ve been his last game of the season.

I know most of you are going to blame Javy for the loss but, I don’t. I blame Hawkshit! You are taught as a kid playing ball to cover first base on a ball hit in that direction! If he would have done that…game over! Also, MILES IS NOT A 3RD BASEMAN!!! Ironic that in our next to last game of the season, we reverted back to the team we saw earlier in the season.

    • I think it was Eric Karros who said before the game that the team is not as bad as it was in the first few months of the season nor as good as it’s been the last month and a half. Last night proved that, in spades. I’m with you Tru – Javy didn’t lose the game. But even so, 20 saves out of 22 chances is still pretty darned impressive. Let’s get ’em tonight boys! GO DODGERS!!!

    • nedisajerk says:

No one should blame Javy and this was his 3 straight games. Donny did have him warming up and when Ellis got that triple had him sit back down. Could he probably had Kuo up after Hawksworth didn’t cover 1st base? All Kuo had to do was get 1 out and didn’t have to faced Parra since he made the 2nd outs in the inning.

      • nedisajerk says:

Donny was so fast pulling Elbert in b2b games why not Hawks for not covering 1st bases? I think the better matchup would’ve been Kuo vs Montero.

    • vl4eccjr says:

Hawkshit blew it by not covering 1st on a routine grounder with two out.

  4. nellyjune says:

Not covering first base was a big factor in that horrendous loss last night, but in light of how this season has gone, with all the ups and downs, it’s not surprising anymore. I think we, as Dodgers fans, have seen and heard it all this year. I can’t wait to see how the hot stove league heats up and what kind of verbal tanglings our wonderful GM and owner get themselves into trying to recover the lost “paying for tickets” fan base. I don’t think the Dodgers have lost any fans (in regards to the players and the team itself). I just think it’s the “paid attendance” that will take a hit if things don’t change with ownership very soon.

  5. nedisajerk says:

    Happy 24th bday Sands.

  6. selltheteam says:

Hawkshit should be fired for his pathetic non-coverage of first base last night. I don’t wanna see his face around here anymore. Don’t pitch him tonight. Don’t sign him for 2012. Bye-bye, Hawkshit.

That’s how you inspire the rest of the team to play solid baseball.

  7. nedisajerk says:

The strange thing is that Hawks is making less money than Kuo, Broxton, MacDougal and Guerrier. I guess Hawks isn’t a 2nd half pitcher just like Bills.

  8. JhallWally says:

Wow, what a major suck fest the game last night turned into. Looked like the team from back in May and June. Even though it really didn’t mean anything, complete ineptitude like that just doesn’t sit well. Thankfully that was not the final game of the season and we have a chance to redeem ourselves tonight and go out on a winning note with Kemper having a monster 2 HR game and joining the 40/40 club.

  9. I think all of us here would like to see that, Wally.

    • JhallWally says:

Yep. I think Kemp needs a big night tonight to have a good shot at the MVP award. Last game of the year and they vote. Would be nice to leave them watching a Kemp highlight night on ESPN.

  10. JhallWally says:

How about the wild card races?!!! They both looked to be all but over at the beginning of the month.

Go Rays!!! Go Orioles, beat the Red Sux!!!! Ya gotta like the Rays and what they’ve accomplished on a super low budget and competing in the AL West against the Yankoffs and Sux.

Go Braves!!! Go Astros, beat the Cards!!!! Don’t particularly care but I dislike LaRussa and the Cards.

And Go Dodgers!!!! Screw Punkarra and the D’Backs!!!!

  11. lbirken says:

Well folks, today is that day. The day I dread all season long. The day in which the little calender in the sports section shows the schedule for the local pro teams. I could see this day coming a few days ago but still, the reality is here. Of course, I am referring to the blanks in the little calender starting tomorrow for the Dodgers (and Angels). That means the season is over; no playoffs and no games to listen to or watch or follow on some electronic device. No more Vinny, Rick or Charlie (no comments, please), no Dodger talk until next Spring. The good news is we will all get over it and worry ourselves sick about next season. Let the fun and games begin.

    Last Lineup for 2011

    Gordon ss
    Sellers 3b
    Kemp cf
    Rivera lf
    Loney 1b
    Sands rf
    Barajas c
    Carroll 2b
    Lilly p

  13. trublu4ever says:

While I’m spouting off…I’d like to say that for Reyes to be pulled after one at bat last night so he could keep his BA was chicken
shit! Matty played every single game and is still close to Reyes (who missed a lot of games) and Braun. So, that is why I think Matty deserves the MVP.

  14. JhallWally says:

I still think most of the talk about having all that money to sign Kemp, Ethier, and Kersh to long term deals as well as go after a big name free agent is bullshit. Just more spin to try and sell season tickets.

  15. Hi OTD,
No matter how much you improve a team, they’ll always be games like last night. Blowing a big lead. To me it seemed like, with the exception of Kemp, a meaningless game for the Dodgers. I was satisfied wit the 81st victory. But no matter how meaningless a game it always hurts to lose when you thought that you were going to win. It’s always a degrading shock. But as always we just have to turn the page and look ahead.
I seen “Moneyball” today and I found it very entertaining. The idea of using statistics to beat big spending. A great movie for the underdog. COM’ON KEMP we want two bombs tonight.

  16. Let’s not forget that “Knee-Jerk Ned” will be on Dodgers Live to discuss what was and what will be. It’ll be interesting to hear his spin, too.

  17. Last night’s game reminded me of a game some 30ish years ago when they blew a 9 run lead in the 9th to I think the Cubs. They did win in extras though if memory serves.

So who had 81-82 wins? I had 75.

  18. trublu4ever says:

Oh, yeah, it’s time for Neddie!

  19. trublu4ever says:

Way to go Dee and, good at bat Justin…moved your man to 3rd.

  20. vl4eccjr says:

    Good evening all.
From reading the previous posts, it seems not many are over the late inning implosion last night. It’s indeed a tough pill to swallow.
Kimbrough just blew the save for the Braves against the Phillies. Tied 3-3 top 9th.

  21. trublu4ever says:

    YAY……Gordon & Tattoo!

  22. vl4eccjr says:

WTG Dee & Justin! The kids are definitely all right!!!

  23. Nellyjune says:

Well, the Rays just scored 2, and bases are loaded with 1 out – GO RAYS!!!

  24. Nellyjune says:

Longoria just hit a GS to put the score at 7-6, Yankees – GO RAYS!!!

  25. Nellyjune says:

This is a Wild Card Wednesday for sure! Cards just won.

  26. What happened to ending the season on a Sunday? This just doesn’t feel right.

  27. What happened to Federshitz getting some playing time?

  28. trublu4ever says:

Holy shit….Carroll has a rbi! That makes 17 for the season.

  29. vl4eccjr says:

Holy shit! An RBI for Carroll!

  30. vl4eccjr says:

OMG! Lilly helps himself out too, till he tries a steal!! WTF is up with that?!

  31. vl4eccjr says:

WOW! Cory Wade blew it! Go Rays!

  32. JhallWally says:

Holy Shit!! Carroll and Lilly with RBIs. Let’s take these ass-clowns down.

  33. JhallWally says:

Alright, Rays tied it up. 7-7. Bottom 9.

  34. JhallWally says:

    ALRIGHT LILLY!!! OUTSTANDING!!!!

  35. vl4eccjr says:

    Hat’s off to Lilly! LOL!

  36. trublu4ever says:

Aha…told you Lilly would nail that SOB!

  37. trublu4ever says:

    LOL…looks like a unanamous verdict!!

  38. trublu4ever says:

  39. JhallWally says:

Alright James!!! I sure hope this Loney shows up next year.

  40. vl4eccjr says:

    Happy Birthday Jerry!

  41. JhallWally says:

    WTG Jerry!!! Happy Birthday!!

  46. How is everyone doing on this fine evening of baseball??

    • JhallWally says:

Great Yung, how about you? Lilly hit Punkarra, Kemp hit a homer, and we’re creaming these bastards!! One more HR for Kemp and the night will be perfect. That and some tasteful nudity by Trumom.. LOL!!

      • trublu4ever says:

        ( ( 🙂 ) )

      • Simply terrific Wally..Great to see Rays fighting, Dodgers going out on top, got my little girl here with me watching the game, and she’s learning to crawl..

        Couldn’t be anymore happier..

        🙂

PS- Officially, I have to say, thats ok about the tasteful nudity, but off the record, Trumom, DO IT AGAIN..!!!

        LOL..

  47. trublu4ever says:

Damn, Phillies scored a run….Braves’ backs are to the wall!

  48. Monumental choke job by the Braves. I love it. America’s team my ass.

  49. trublu4ever says:

So, in the NL….the Cards play the Phillies and the Dbacks play the Brewers.

  50. I’m happy that the Cards are playing – it’s wonderful that Furcal gets to be a part of the post season.

  51. Nellyjune says:

I’m not in awe that the Cards came back to get the Wild Card. I’m in awe that the Braves blew it!

  52. trublu4ever says:

    Oh, God….it’s him!

  53. 0 for 2011 – Velez has a perfect season.

  54. JhallWally says:

0’fer the season. We’ll always remember Eugenio by gosh!!

  55. vl4eccjr says:

I have to admit, a few months back I never dreamed Lilly’s season ending ERA would be under four. This last month & a half he got it done. Quite a surprise.

  56. trublu4ever says:

Rays are in some deep poop right now….2 on 0 out for Yanks

  57. Nellyjune says:

3-3 fir the Red Sox/Orioles game!!!

  58. vl4eccjr says:

Hah! Take that Papelbon! You douchebag!

  59. Matty – Matty – clap, clap, clap!!!!

  60. JhallWally says:

Rats!!! Oh well, what a season. We’re proud of you!!!

  61. Stick a fort in Francona, he just lost his job..

Collapsing the way the RedSux did, you’d have to figure Francona just lost his job..

  62. Ah, well, he sure tried. But Matt has had one heck of a great year.

  63. JhallWally says:

Red Sux are toast. Another monumental collapse!!! Ya gotta love it!!!!

  64. vl4eccjr says:

WOW! How bout them Rays? Not a good night for ex Dodger relievers on the Wankee roster. Wade & Proctor blew! LOL.
    .
    .
    .
RATS!! I was praying for Matt to get number 40! Still one hell of a season!!!

  65. trublu4ever says:

    Oh, no….not again!

  66. Game ain’t over yet. Matt could get another at bat.

  67. The Rays are a testament to what no money, but GOOD INTELLIGENT baseball people can accomplish.

  68. vl4eccjr says:

DAMN! WTF? Deja vu all over again!!

  69. Lightning is not supposed to strike twice in the same place – didn’t Troncoso get the memo?

  70. JhallWally says:

Well, I hope that is the last we ever have to see of Troncoso!!

  71. I think we can all agree that Tronco is history. Don’t think we have to worry about opening up a spot on the 40 man for those other two Ned got for Robinson.

  72. selltheteam says:

Here we go again. Oh well, maybe Matt will get another crack at #40.

  73. trublu4ever says:

Why bring in this piece of shit?!

  74. vl4eccjr says:

    STOP THE BLEEDING!!!

  75. JhallWally says:

    Un-Freaking-Acceptable!!!

  76. trublu4ever says:

Well, damn, Donnie…it took you long enough to get him out of there!

  77. JhallWally says:

    C’mon Kenley!!! Save our asses..

  78. Damn, I think even Brox could’ve held a 7 run lead in the 9th.

  79. trublu4ever says:

    Thank-you, Kenley!

  80. JhallWally says:

Whew!! WTG Kenley!!! We can go home winners. 82-80.

  81. vl4eccjr says:

    Whew! That was scary!

  82. Kenley’s GOT to be the closer next year.

  83. vl4eccjr says:

Even with the Dodgers taking this series, my hat goes off to Gibson & what he’s gotten out of his team. You can never count these Dbacks out of a game till the very last out.

  84. Nellyjune says:

162 games have come and went (161 fir the Dodgers). Bring on the Hot Stove League!!!

  85. Nellyjune says:

Both, Matt Kemp and Kenley Jansen made Dodger history tonight 🙂
