It feels a little strange writing about baseball on a day of such national, even world significance. The thousands of people from our and many other nations that lost their lives on that fateful day ten years ago will never be forgotten. The War on Terror is still going on and brave Americans continue to sacrifice their lives so the rest of us can continue our pursuit of happiness and freedom. There will be observances of this solemn day in ballparks all over America today. Baseball serves to unite people from many locations and backgrounds in a way few other activities can claim. So acknowledge this day in a way you find suitable, then take part in our baseball community by rooting for your favorite team.
On this day, that has been anticipated in the news for months, the tenth anniversary of the nefarious attack on our country by terrorists, the Dodgers have a chance to sweep the Giants and raise their record over .500 for the first time since April 29, when they were 14-13.
Dana Eveland had another great outing, limiting the Giants to three hits and no runs over seven plus innings. For Eveland, known as “The Big Sweat” during his time with the Milwaukee Brewers, it was no sweat – blowing away his opposing batters. Maybe the team celebrated the win by eating some Schweddy Balls, the new ice cream flavor by Ben & Jerry’s. Who knows, the Dodgers might have Schweddy Balls after every win.
In case you did not see it, Ned Colletti discussed his views on the off-season in an article by Ken Gurnick. Blah, blah, more of the same… I can’t wait to read your views on his views.

One of the few delights of the season – crippling the Giants, maybe enough to push them down into third place. On the other hand, I’m delighted with the AZ team’s fortunes; glad for Gibson. At least there will be a team to root for in the playoffs. My second choice would be the Brewers. The Angels are proving rather surprising at the end, and I don’t know exactly how to feel about them, but I pretty much root for the NL team in the end – except last year when it was the Giants.
I’d love to see the Diamondbacks & Tigers in the WS. That would be fun for me to watch and a ratings nightmare for whatever network covers it!
Dre is going to have surgery on his knee Wednesday 😦 Hopefully, he will be good as new and playing for the Dodgers next season.

Glad Dre is getting his knee done. Sort of strange that they made it like it was Dre’s fault.
It seems to me as if the knee was bothering him — he wanted to play because he felt that was the expectation of management and didn’t want to let them down — and then said something to Simmers that he expounded on in his article thus causing a big controversy. So again it seems as if a big problem was communication between Dre – his agent – management – and the training staff (Conte).
I think it is mostly Conte… a poor excuse for a trainer!

Not the greatest day for Vinnie. He called Lindblom Bloomquist three times. I don’t know if anyone on the production team picked up the error and corrected him. If not, why not?
Maybe Vin was looking at the upcoming series with the D’backs and saw that Bloomquist would be coming to L.A.?
Believe me, I would have preferred Vinny, errors and all, compared to having to listen to Krud & Krap for two days straight!
I believe you. He has to keep track of hundreds of players and I am surprised he does not make more errors. It is easy to get a name like Lindblom confused with Bloomquist. Both are not well known and I guess once the name gets in your head, it stays there.
I can not even imagine talking the way he does, calling complete games by himself, never mind the poetic and literary flourishes, and not stumbling over my words or going blank.
He is the greatest!

I spent the day visiting the outside of the WTC site as I’ve done on most of the 9/11 anniversaries. This year I was with my daughter Claudine. In 2001, I was working as a messenger after retiring from the MTA and delivering and picking up at the WTC, daily. I thank God I hadn’t left for work yet when the dark moments occurred. I’ll never forget those days, in and outside the buildings. Luckily I didn’t lose any loved ones. I left for work that day thinking it was an accident but found out differently when I arrived at my site on 5th Avenue and 53rd St.
I got back home today during the Giants 6th inning, so I didn’t miss much. As they say and they’re right. “You can’t win them all”.
I feel comfortable with what Colletti said. I feel the team has improved immense over the past month or so and I agree with Ned that very little tinkering with the team will be necessary over the winter but of course as we all know these are just words and talk is cheep..
And, that’s what the organization has become….cheap!

What was your transportation as a messenger? NYC is a great city but it is not parking friendly for cars. Are there special parking privileges, ie. double parking while running inside a building for a pickup or delivery (like the UPS trucks do in L.A.) for messengers in NYC?
I think the team needs a little more than tinkering. Our utility guys have done pretty good lately but I would like to see a more permanent solution to the offense. Maybe McCourt should bring in Billy Beane and bring back Paul DePodesta to help him build a good team on a shoestring budget. I think Colletti is trying to do that but he is not as smart as those guys.
