When Will Our Next ROTY Come?

It’s obviously a weird subject to touch upon, but in all seriousness, when will our next ROTY come?

It’s been almost 15 years since the last Dodger rookie put it upon himself to rise above the competition and play at a level worth rewarding.

These 16 players below have not only represented the Los Angeles Dodgers within my lifetime, but have also done so throughout the Brooklyn and golden years of this team.

1. Todd Hollandsworth

2. Raul Mondesi

3. Mike Piazza

4. Hideo Nomo

5. Eric Karros

6. Rick Sutcliffe

7. Steve Howe

8. Fernando Valenzuela

9. Steve Sax

10. Ted Sizemore

11. Jim Lefebvre

12. Frank Howard

13. Jim Gilliam

14. Joe Black

15. Don Newcombe

16. Jackie Robinson

These players have represented this franchise, and even when there was no Dodger player named as ROTY, there was always one player in consideration who wore Dodgers across his chest. But what happened.? Obviously, those days are gone, but why.?

I do so believe that the lack of minor league recruiting talent has diminished to the sense that we’ve underspent on signing Draft picks whom could make a difference. Think about this?

Since 2004, the first season that Frank McCourt was officially entrusted as the brain-trust of this team, this team has drafted notables such as:

-Blake Dewitt

-Scott Elbert

-Jamie Hoffman

-Javy Guerra

-Luke Hochevar

-Ivan DeJesus

-Josh Bell

-Jonathan Meloan

-Brent Leach

-Trayvon Robinson

-Scott Van Slyke

-Chase D’Arnaud

-Clayton Kershaw

-Bryan Morris

-Preston Mattingly

-Chris Withrow

-James Adkins

-Andrew Lambo

-Ethan Martin

-Josh Lindblom

-Kyle Russell

-Dee Gordon

-Cole St. Clair

-Nate Eovaldi

-Allen Webster

-Aaron Miller

-Garrett Gould

-Brett Wallach

-J.T. Wise

-Austin King

-Zach Lee

-Shawn Tolleson

-Devon Ethier

-Cody Martin

-Chris Reed

-Alex Santana

-Ryan O’Sullivan

Out of all these drafts, only six players are currently in the majors with this team, while most have yet to break through due to their slow development. Many have been traded, such as I count 10 who are no longer with this organization.

At what point are we going to stop signing pitchers whom furthermore have yet to produce more than Clayton Kershaw, who was rushed and made to learn on the fly. When are we going to sign talent whom we could use now and in the future. When are we going to tap into the Asian, Latin, and African continent for players.

I do not speak for many, but for the lack of money, we have diminished the talent level in the minors, and thus, what once in a while ago was deemed as a common thing, is now foreign to us. Who will finally break through and capture this now unattainable trophy. We have a probable Cy Young and MVP within our ranks today, and to think that we could someday have a 3rd piece of hardware to add to that in a ROTY, it would signal the overturn of an organization that as of now is in turmoil, and will continue to be in turmoil while this ownership group, and to reiterate this brain-trust is finally put out to pasture and shot down in the spirit of all that is decent and holy. Sorta to put it outta it’s misery.

This Day In Los Angeles Baseball History

September 10, 2008 – With a 4-2 victory over the visiting Yankees, the Angels clinch the division flag on the earliest date in the history of the American League West. The Halos, the first club this season to secure a post-season spot, have finished in first place four times in the past five seasons.

  1. This Day In Dodgers History-

    September 10, 1988

Continuing what would become a hot streak for the ages, Orel Hershiser shuts out the Cincinnati Reds, 5-0, at Dodger Stadium to become a 20-game winner for the first and only time in his career. The right-hander limited the Reds to seven hits, walked three and struck out eight.
Hershiser went on to record shutouts in his next three starts and broke a record many believed would not be broken when he stretched his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 59 with 10 scoreless frames September 28 at San Diego.

He unofficially extended the streak to 67 innings before giving up two runs in the ninth inning against the New York Mets in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series.

Hershiser finished one of the most successful careers of any pitcher in Dodger history with a 23-8 record, 2.26 ERA, 15 complete games and eight shutouts. The unanimous winner of the National League Cy Young award, Hershiser keyed the Dodgers drive to their sixth World Championship.

    September 10, 1932:
Dodger outfielder Johnny Frederick hits his sixth pinch-hit home run of the season, a major league record, and lifts Brooklyn to a dramatic, 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs and pitcher Burleigh Grimes.

Michael J. Fox was on the David Letterman show and talked about how Nike was going to auction 1500 pairs of these shoes with all proceeds to benefit research for Parkinson Disease.

The auction is for 150 pairs a day for 10 days starting last Thursday.
It is amazing how well these are selling. They start at $0.99 and quickly rise to $3 or $4 thousand.

We will never have another ROTY until this orgaization decides to let them play a season. With all the over-the-hill, over priced players Neddy likes, rookies never get the chance to pan out.

  3. Nellyjune says:

Trayvon was the making of a definite candidate for ROTY, but I guess that hope is now with Seattle for the time being. Like Tru said, we never seem to have them around long enough to get them the playing time. Ned finds PVLs instead.

The Dodgers used to be great at finding and developing players but that was long ago and certainly can be pointed to as the main reason the organization has not won anything since 1988. I still believe the untimely and unfortunate dismissal of Al Campanis was the beginning of the decline. The Dodgers used to spend a lot of money finding and developing Latin players. Now I am not too naive to realize this early quest for Latin players was motiviated by how cheaply these players could be had since they did not have to go through the draft (something I hope MLB will resolve soon). But under the McCourt stewardship, player developement money has been reduced, especially in Latin America as other ogranizations caught up to the Dodgers. But clearly the Dodgers need to draft better and develope players who can play at the major league level.

    .
Preparing for another potentially turbulent offseason, General Manager Ned Colletti won a dog-eared copy of the 2004 copy of “The Bill James Handbook” in an eBay auction, from which he will cherry-pick a new set of now-PVL’s to block those damn kids who won’t stay off the boss’s lawn. Manager Don Mattingly later expressed the team’s need for a big bat next year, to which Colletti replied “Sure Don, let me just type that in my Imaginary Typewritter…”, made fake clicking noises and sang “doodley-doodley-doo”, then made a farting raspberry noise as Mattingly dejectedly left the office.

Come on Dodgers…..do it for me one more time!

  7. Nellyjune says:

    Way to go James!!!!

  8. trublu4ever says:

Love the fact that Tattoo can play all 3 infield positions. Miles doesn’t do much for me.

  9. Nellyjune says:

I turned back to the race, and when I switched back to the game, James had scored 🙂

  10. trublu4ever says:

    BISON!

  11. trublu4ever says:

    YAY…a balk!

  12. vl4eccjr says:

BALK!! Wow! What a cheap way to score! I’m loving it!
    What’s that Deutch word? Schatenfreude?!!!

  13. colliethec says:

    I’m here folks!! Go Blue!!!

  14. colliethec says:

I didn’t realize the game started earlier… so I was watching some DVR’d Jimmy Kimmels. I flipped on the game just in time to see Kemp score the 2nd run.

Hopefully we can bury them this series. I wish we could of gotten a couple more last inning. Krup hasn’t ever seen 3 infield singles and then a balk!! Ever! Poor guy…

  15. colliethec says:

That Pill dude has a quick bat.

  16. vl4eccjr says:

    Tattoo saves the inning!

  17. colliethec says:

Krup after that catch — unbelievable… Love it!!!!

Of course Jon Miller says it was just “bad luck” for Belt. Is it Jon? Or did Sellers just make a nice catch? You piece of crap announcer. Is it ever so hard to give credit to another teams players????

  18. colliethec says:

VL4 — One of the reasons I love Vin is that I’ve had to listen to these idiots for so many years. They are so different in the way they do things. Vin is all class and they are all ass….

    • vl4eccjr says:

Well said! Couldn’t have put it better myself.
Vin is the last of the old time greats, and is our treasure!

      • colliethec says:

Agreed! Vin is one of the last greats. I hope that starts to change and they get some good voices in baseball that don’t have stupid home run calls, etc… Just call the game and have some good insight. I think some of the greats are the older announcers because they had to do it before TV. Most of the games were on the radio so they had to be descriptive and have substance.

  19. trublu4ever says:

Up ’til now, the gnats are making Eveland look like Cy Young! 😉

  20. vl4eccjr says:

I see Notre Dame has got the Shamrocks on the side of the gold helmets tonight in Ann Arbor. I wonder if it’s going to be a permanent thing?

  21. colliethec says:

Even Old Spice is starting to make fun of Mr. Wilson…

  22. trublu4ever says:

    LOL!

  23. Does anyone know if the Dee catch from last nights game made the ESPN Play of the Week or highlight reel..

  24. colliethec says:

It didn’t make the MLB Network one. However their CF diving catch made it. I know that one Sellers made the other night at second was the MLB Network play of the day…

  25. colliethec says:

Diamondbacks tied it up in the 9th.

      • its that Kirk Gibson fellow..

hmn, I dunno where he mighta learnd that thing about grinding it out and winning..

maybe from what was once this proud Dodger ball club..

it must sicken him to know that he took this team with one swing and his courage to the WS and less than a 30 yrs later, this team is smoldering in ruins and ashes billowing throughout..

  26. So on a happy note, FOOTBALLL’s back…

    🙂

  27. trublu4ever says:

    Uh, oh….come on Jansen!

  28. colliethec says:

Come on Kenly — He isn’t wearing his thong this year.

  29. vl4eccjr says:

Come on K-J! Shut em down!

  30. colliethec says:

I’ll say it for them… grab some pine meat!!!!

  31. Strike out this piece of crap Keppinger..and bean Ross when he comes up, just for being a former Dodger turn Halloweener..

  32. colliethec says:

    & join your buddy there…

  33. trublu4ever says:

    Yes! One more, KJ!

  34. trublu4ever says:

    Woo-hoo!

  35. For some reason, it seems the G’Nats/Frisconians/Halloweeners/Jack-0-Lanterns’ etc., have given up this season..

or maybe its just their crappy hitting as always..
    lol..

    :-p

  36. Is Velez still on this team..Did Ned sign him to his monstrous contract already following last night’s game winning slide at home plate?…

  37. colliethec says:

They admitted they were wrong and he was safe!!! Take cover… dogs and cats are going to start raining down!!!!!

  38. colliethec says:

Dbacks won… Have to admit I like that.

  39. 6/6 in stolen bases..

Oeltjen deserves a chance on next years ball club..

    either Oeltjen or Gwynn..

  40. hahahahahaha..

Vinny making fun of *pathetic* attempt at a BEAT LA chant by one man..

    good job Vinny

  41. Make em pay Tony..Hit a Gran-Salami..

  42. colliethec says:

I wonder if Gwynn will try to bunt here?

  43. vl4eccjr says:

Par for the course. Notre Dame blows another one in the last minute. 😦

  44. trublu4ever says:

    Damn!

  45. colliethec says:

Javy — don’t go all Broxton on us!

  46. trublu4ever says:

    Whew…thanks, Matty!

  47. colliethec says:

    That was a looooooong out.

  48. colliethec says:

Come on Boys!!! Let’s do this!!!!

  49. trublu4ever says:

    YES!

  50. Nellyjune says:

    Way to go Dodgers!!!!!

  51. vl4eccjr says:

Whew! Javy does the tightrope act….AGAIN!

  52. colliethec says:

    YEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!

  53. vl4eccjr says:

Javy may need a break. Let K-J have the opportunity to close tomorrow if need be.
    Here’s hoping for the sweep!!!

  54. Nellyjune says:

I liked watching Eveland pitch when he was with the A’s. I’m glad he is finally getting the chance. Javy is definitely here to stay hopefully.

  55. trublu4ever says:

What was fantastic about his win is the gnats fall another game behind the dbacks and, we are oh-so close to passing their asses!
