Conundrum Amongdem

Since its on everyone’s mind – who do we root for this series? On the one hand, how can you ever root for the Gnats? On the other hand, we know what Ned’s thinking.  A three game sweep by the Gnats almost assuredly means Ned at least won’t be a buyer at the trade deadline. A three game sweep by our boys in blue would almost certainly mean Ned will trade the farm, or what’s left of it. I’m of the opinion even winning two will encourage Ned into thinking he can find the right piece(s) to make a run, even though we’ve already lost a game in the standings since the all-star break, which flies in the face of Ned’s “if we can make up one game a week” scenario.

Billingsley may make the decision easier.  He’s been pitching well of late, but not so coincidentally it was with A.J. Ellis behind the plate. Now that A.J. is back in the desert and its Barajas/Navarro, will Billz revert back?

Who will you be pulling for this series?

I understand where TruMom and Nelly are coming from. Even my daughter says she can’t root for the Giants.

But for me, the deeper we get in a hole, the better. Twelve and a half games out isn’t enough. I’d like to be at least fifteen or sixteen games out this week and next week.

Still, I’ve got this nagging issue – will Ned ever be a seller, even if he’s twenty games out? His ego, or maybe Frank’s ego, just gets in the way of rational thought.

    • trublu4ever says:

With Ned you never know what the jerk will do. As a seller, he may get rid of good prospects or, even worse, a good player or two that we already have. And, excluding a few pitchers, one or two good players is all we do have 😉 Still, I CANNOT ROOT FOR THE GIANTS, EVER!!!!!

  2. selltheteam says:

After yesterday’s game, I’m still wondering why Matt Kemp did not ask Ted Lilly to be his pitcher for the HR Derby.

  3. selltheteam says:

I agree with Beav. Why support Frank by going to Inside the Dodgers anymore? My thanks go to 32and53fan for creating a place where we can express our thoughts without supporting McBroke.

    • trublu4ever says:

I’m in! As soon as Dodger4life gets his pc fixed, he will be here too!

    • 32and53fan says:

Thanks for coming over STT. This site is for us fans to use without any restrictions from MLBlogs rules. In case you didn’t know, every poster here is given “author” status so he or she can create new threads. Enchanted has done an excellent job in this regard.

It is clear from Josh’s newest post that he is focusing his attention on Twitter and Facebook to try to drum up business for the Dodgers. I don’t blame him. That is his job. I get it. I am doing the same thing to try to help a friend. Check http://bitly.com/m3Dtno to see what I have done for singer/actor Rick Moses.

As I said in a different reply, most of us check multiple web sites for Dodger news and views. Once ITD has a new thread, we typically do not comment on the contents of Josh’s post. It is mostly marketing fluff or blue sky platitudes anyway. We just use it as a place to chat among like-minded (or not) fans.

I am glad to see that this blog has had such a good reception after only a few days. You guys “get it”.

Don’t worry about Dodger management knowing our opinions. They probably only get a filtered report by Josh anyway. I’ve got a feeling guys like Colletti and McCourt feel too important to waste their time slogging through hundreds of comments on ITD or other web sites. And Josh is smart enough to have seen the links to either his archived posts from a long ago winter day or to Outside the Dodgers to have clicked through and seen what was happening here. Right Josh?

  4. trublu4ever says:

Enchanted has to go find Oldbrooklynfan and bring him here also.

  5. scottinarcadia says:

I’m here to ride out the storm!

  6. trublu4ever says:

Scottinarcadia is on his way over here too! yay

  7. messagebear says:

I’m beginning to agree with the purpose of this “Outside” blog too. I don’t mind if Josh wants to pursue the social media sites on behalf of his owner and management, but I am totally tired of the spinfucker putting his bland commentary on the MLB blog called “Inside Dodgers”, which one would presume is a blog intended for the fans by major league baseball. The only reason I’m still responding to his pitiful threads is that I don’t want the Dodger front office to feel like they’ve driven off all of us dissenters. So, I will at least leave a hearty F U message for him on each thread.

    • trublu4ever says:

      Way to go, Bear!

    • I think it’d be funny if Josh came over here and posted what he really thinks!! LMAO

      • 32and53fan says:

It would be awesome to break through his CYA corporate spin and get his real thoughts using his WordPress name Inside the Dodgers, but I don’t think he has the cashews to do that.

Matt Kemp is one of the few players that actively tweets on a daily basis. I invited him to come and share his opinion here.

“@TheRealMattKemp Hey Matt, thanks for your tweets! Check out some hard core fans at http://bit.ly/nmieLe Let us hear from the REAL MK.”

I doubt that he will post here but he might look at this site. This is obviously a safer place for those people who are true Dodger insiders to post what they really think.

  8. messagebear says:

Yeah, if you do that Josh, why not post under the name “JoshNoSuck”, and we’ll know who it’s coming from.

  9. thinkingblue says:

This is a great place, but the only problem I see is that management is NOT reading these posts. How are they going to know how we really feel. Instead of us kicking Frank out, he just kicked us out of ITD! I hate him more and more each day!

  10. nedisajerk says:

Can we change the lineup to and have Kemp batting 3rd and Ethier 4th since Rivera is going to bat 5th and than you have the R, L, R combo instead of Kemp and Rivera hitting back to back?

  11. nedisajerk says:

I don’t know what game it was someone TBLA but post this and I think it funny.

Andre Ethier holding baby Andre Ethier

I hope you don’t mind me putting the image inline Shad. I am just letting people know that we can now do this. See my comment on how to do this. -32and53fan

  12. lbirken says:

Each to his or her own but I will never root for the Dodgers to lose. If the Dodgers can make things difficult for the Giants or any other team, so be it. There are 162 games on the schedule and I expect the players to give enough effort to try to win every game.

Nelly, it can’t be easy living with Giants fans these days but their team is getting the job done. Too bad the fans just can’t enjoy the ride and take their wins graciously. And too bad their announcers do not have the class the Dodgers announcers have in not over reacting when the Dodgers win even if it is against the Giants.

    • Nellyjune says:

lbirken – i replied to you on ITD, but in short, it’s not so much watching the two teams play as it is listening to their announcers. You would never hear Vin say “Grab some pine meat!” after a visiting player strikes out or use whiteout marker to mark over visiting fans. My hubby enjoys listening to Vin more because he learns info about the gnats that he didn’t know. The gnat announcers are too busy commenting on the fans and using their whiteout pin.

  13. nedisajerk says:

Look at TB pitching and hitting and I don’t think I ever seen this before and how did the Red Sox manger not to score earlier with all those walks they had last night?

    • nedisajerk says:

I wouldn’t imagine staying up on the east coast this late and seeing the Rays only having 3 hits and 50 AB’s and Pedroia had 3 hit himself but Ellsbury goes 0/8.

  14. trublu4ever says:

The L.A. Times is doing a poll and, I thought you guys could answer this: name the 3 best left-fielders in Dodgers history.

    • Left Fielder according to Offense or Defense. And do they have to be exclusive to LF or could they of moved. Because there is no true LF on this team right now, and hasn’t been one for at least 20 yrs.

      • lbirken says:

I have been trying to think of the same thing: when did the Dodgers last have a decent left fielder. Sheffield? Not sure who the best might be but Dusty Baker had a pretty good run on some good Dodger teams.

        • To be honest, we’ve never had a true LF on any team, as far as I can remember. Most started out as a CF and then went to LF and the original LF transferred over to RF. So I’m guessing, other than Baker and some other exceptions, I’d say it’d have to say Manny and Pierre and the former LF Ethier.

    • I’m thinking Gwynn, Thames, and Gibbons, but I can’t decide in what order.

  15. JhallWally says:

Here is tonights lineup. GO DODGERS!! I can’t root for the G’nats no matter what happens. And if we lose, it will soften the blow knowing that perhaps it will keep Ned out of the buy mode. Also, I am a bit concerned that if we are losing badly, this thing might just turn into a huge salary dump where we are not going after real value.

    SS Furcal
    2B Miles
    RF Ethier
    CF Kemp
    LFRivera
    1BLoney
    3B Uribe
    C Barajas
    P Billingsley

  16. Nellyjune says:

    Happy Birthday Shad!!!!

  17. Happy B-Day Shad!

  18. Furcal and Uribe still in the lineup. Crazy to think they are the best of the worst and grosely overpaid.

Come next CBA, someone needs to raise a hand and demand that ownership have right to terminate contract if player is hurt or underperforming for more than 1/2 of it.

    • trublu4ever says:

I think hitting below .200 is reason enough to be terminated. Without pay, i might add……reason….not qualified to be a ball player. And, a detriment to the fans of the Dodgers.

      • I think the era of grace is gone from all sports. Like when to say its time to hang it up or take the night train outta town for the bettering of the team, knowing when to step aside. Uribe would get mad props for saying let me go, or raffy for saying bring Dee up, I’ll mentor him and give him the starting job…I’m not tooting my own horn but I could hit better than .200 and at least get like 30 rbi’s with all those people that have been stranded on base this year.

  19. Who are the three best Catchers in Dodgers history?

  20. JhallWally says:

Campanella, Piazza, and Scioscia were the leading vote getters when I placed my vote. Coincidently, they are the three I voted for.

  21. I would put Rosboro is that category. He succeeded Campanella and did win 3 WS rings.

  22. lbirken says:

The Dodgers have had a lot of good catchers over the years. I never got to see him play but Campy probably is the best. Roseboro was good, Scoscia and Yeager were great defensive catchers and decent enough hitters. But of the ones I saw, Piazza brought the most excitement with his offense. Roseboro, Scoscia and Yeager were not depended on as much for their offense although they got their share of hits. But Piazza’s offense clearly overshadowed his defense, which was adequate.

  23. So in that case, who has been the best defensive catcher and who has been the offensive catcher ever?

Who would make your dream team all star dodgers lineup as starting catcher?

    Any catcher, any year.

  24. 32and53fan says:

I have invited James Loney to come and express his thoughts here.

  26. One question I hope to have answered when all is said and done, is who was the best pitcher out of the two?

    Koufax or Kershaw??

Who is the more proficient and strike out master out of the two?

    • Koufax pitched long before the leagues were completely watered down by expansion. I think by the time its all over, it’ll be comparing apples to oranges. Not saying Kersh won’t have some impressive numbers, but no matter what the yardstick, no one will ever supplant what Koufax did in those 6 magical years. The game’s just not played the same anymore.

      • My guess is that if Kersh can last some 16 years in the league, he can be one of the all time greats. His stuff is filthy and him cutting back on walks and better while hitting makes him better for the foreseeable future. His wins might be down if he doesn’t get a team of hitters or production behind him, but more so than not, he’ll be revered in line with Koufax, Drysdale, Sutton, Hershiser, Valenzuela, Kershaw.

    • 32and53fan says:

In his first six years, Koufax was horrible, or mediocre at best with flashes of the brilliance yet to come. He had the misfortune of being a bonus baby, which meant he had to stay on the major league roster for two full seasons. In 1955, at age 19, he had no business being in the show and Walt Alston knew that and did not give him many chances to learn at that level.

Other players resented his $20,000 signing bonus which probably didn’t help his mental attitude much. It was only because the Dodgers were so far ahead in the pennant race that Sandy got as many opportunities as he did.

Kershaw had the advantage to have pitched at least for awhile in the minor leagues which gave him the opportunity to work on his command and control without undue pressure. He should surpass by light years what Koufax did in his first six seasons. He also has the advantage of modern medical care. He might not have to retire at age 30 if he hurts his arm.

Like Enchanted says, Koufax was completely dominant in his last half dozen seasons. No one comes close. But in the context of what could constitute a complete career, there is room for argument. Compare Warren Spahn. He played his entire 21-year baseball career in the National League. He won 20 games each in 13 seasons, including a 23-7 record when he was age 42.

      • Granted Kersh is still only 22 going on 23, and with already 2 1/2 seasons under him, it’s safe to assume that he’ll get a lot of wins before all is said and done. He is level headed enough to negate any negative things around him, and his wife should help in that department.

What separates Koufax from Kersh is his 4 no hitters and 1 perfect game. His 3 cy youngs are also a seperation, but with this season or next, Kersh will get his 1st cy young. 4 or 5 cy youngs before all is said and done are my thinking. Kersh is throwing gas at a prolific rate and his delivery is stress reducing on his shoulder. (I throw the same way)

Kersh will always be compared to Koufax, but rightfully so, at the end of the day, I feel that he will have other pitchers compared to him.

      • It was tragic to have Koufax retire so prematurely, and in an age when he could have flourished, he could of been better than he became. Why not 8 no hitters, 2 perfect games, 6 cy youngs, etc. with another 10 years, he could of done it.

With 20 years, Kersh could live that reality.

  27. Nellyjune says:

They aren’t showing the game in either market. The gnats don’t show any home games, even though they are sold out, and they blacked out the Dodger feed from us too -idiots!!!!
    .
    BTW – Brian – Matt has a twitter account @TheRealMattKemp 🙂

  28. trublu4ever says:

Hey, Billz….have you heard of 1,2,3 inning?!

  29. Shad — you mentioned above to have Matt bat 3 & Dre bat 4th with Rivera 5th. I’ve been wanting to see that all year. It get’s Matt more AB’s and also opens up the right side for Dre as well as the running game for Matt. I would love to see them try it for a few games and see what happens.

    • trublu4ever says:

I’ve said that too….like when Bonds played for the gnats….he hit 3rd and did much better than when he was cleanup.

      • Exactly Tru. Also when Dre is on and Matt hits a gapper Dre is usually only going to make it to 3rd. The other way around and Kemp is scoring. Also Dre takes many pitches and works the count so it would give Kemp the opportunity to run. Most of Kemps singles are to LF so if Dre is at 1st and Kemp singles to LF Dre is probably at 2nd. If Kemp is on 1st most of Dre’s singles are to CF or RF (Also it would open up the right side, since they’d be holding Kemp on, for Dre to pull the ball helping his power numbers), that Kemp would probably make it to 3rd. I just think they need to do something to generate some runs.

    • nedisajerk says:

Sorry I haven’t been replying to everyone but I just got back home.

  30. How can you OPS .570?

  31. trublu4ever says:

Nice to see Fecal sporting a .167 average……switch hitting, no less!

  32. Sorry but I’m with Nelly & Tru. Being as a Bay Area inhabitant there is no way I can root for the Giants. I get grief daily living here. Everyday at work — on the softball field — and just pretty much every day I have to see someone wearing something orange and black that refers to 2010. I just sucks…

I guess if they were paying my mortgage I could root them a little.

I’ll be there tomorrow for some autographs. Not sure if I’ll make it to the game however.

  33. trublu4ever says:

Just great…..after listening to the sweet tones of Vinny….I now get the annoying Charlie and Rick!

  34. That might just do it for tonight.

  35. Not to say much, but on the MLB.com Gameday feed, he picture of Uribe is weird. He looks to have a natural stance and is thin. LoL. Just sayin’

  36. He singled. He got the bat to create a miracle. Keep praying. LoL.

  37. That’ll move him back up in the line-up for sure.

  38. I think the Gnats need a veteran SS now. Can we trade him before his next AB?

  39. Don’t matter if he gets on base or anyone for that matter. The hitters don’t hit or bring people around. The running is gone, offense stagnant, etc. It’s sad that when we get production from the bottom of the lineup, the top can’t bring em in and when the top produces, the bottom grounds/pops/SO’s.

When can we start ridding ourselves of Pentland and Honeycutt

  40. Give him away. Right now. Play a man down, I think it would actually be the better option at this point.

  41. We need a Dodger Maid to clean house!!!

  42. JhallWally says:

    WTG Matt!! Nice catch!!

  43. Scene from Major League II-

Lou Brown: Come on, you’re not going to let her get you down, are you? You guys won last year just to spite her. Maybe, she’s what we need.
Jake Taylor: Oh, Skip, they were a different team last year.
Lou Brown: Taylor, it’s not your job to make excuses. That’s all you guys do good! It’s either a *leg* thing or a *spiritual* thing, or a *psychological* thing, or a *heart attack*!
Jake Taylor: Who used heart attack?
    Lou Brown: Me.
    [collapses from a heart attack]

[ADD IN WHOEVER YOU’D LIKE, BUT POINT IS, OUR SEASON AND SITUATION IS THE MAJOR LEAGUE MOVIE]

  44. 32and53fan says:

LOL – Vin Scully on Kemp’s catch for the 3rd out:

“Oh, did he take an overnight trip to get to that ball.”

  45. Miller pulled the “call the cobs he was robbed”. Wow that’s original…

  46. vl4eccjr says:

Jeeez! Alot of bad bounces tonight. They can’t catch a break!

  47. Jeez – it’d take our guys a month of Sundays to score 4 runs. I think I can call game on this one now. Catch you all tomorrow.

  48. nedisajerk says:

Well I guess I was asking to much for this team like I knew they wouldn’t even care about winning tonight.

  49. nedisajerk says:

I wonder how did the Giants turn Vogelsong to a stud all of a sudden and now look like he’s qualify #1 in the ERA title when he’s has been miserable his entire career with the Pirates.

  50. They have a pitching coach that actually knows something and does give a damn when his arsenal is under performing. Ours, he’s at the local 7-11 getting filled on Big Gulps and Donuts. Throw in a hot dog just for good measure.

    • nedisajerk says:

I doubt it most of those Giants fans want that pitching coach fire and Bochy last year in the 1st half.

      • Well I’d rather have someone that has worked with Tim, Matt, Vogel, Barry, Sanchez, Bumgardner. They have gotten better with time and patience, and our pitchers, with the exception of Kersh has either stayed stagnant in progress or regressed tremendously. Bills, has stayed the same, no change. Lilly, well shoot me before his next start, Kuroda, put a stamp on him and ship him out now, and Rubby, he’s a baby pitching on a team that sucks crap. If we run out of enough pitchers, we can always put Loney in to pitch. He can’t be worst than any of those he is pitching for. (Loney was a pitcher before 1B.

  51. JhallWally says:

Shad, I think they care. They just aren’t very good. Bottom line is that this team SUCKS SHIT!!!!

    • trublu4ever says:

      That’s putting it mildly!

    • Very Good.!!!!

Let’s talk facts. They are the worst team on paper and pen. They couldn’t hit a ball if they had an entire tree to swing with.
Couldn’t score if they had a man on base at 3rd to begin each inning. They can’t find home plate and the catcher’s mitt.

      Worst offense ever.

This team is a demeaning, horrid, deplorable, atrocious, sickening, reveling, bile piece of shit to ever of graced a Dodger uniform. This entire organization, from the Top on down is completely consumed by stupidity and brown nosing. Not one has a spine, and the ones that do, don’t say a thing. It’s a complete dictatorship that this organization has become, as the best that once was, is now being run by a parking lot attendant.

Heck, even our own lone ray of sunshine in Vin would rather stay employed under this horrid regime and act the course rather than exit on his terms and tell it like it is, how it was and how now, it no longer is.

I am truly sickened by the fact that we cannot take posters or signs into the stadium but they can plaster bullshit on the walls and decks promoting their agenda in making more money and (taking economic advantage) out of every single Dodger fan. I refuse to be raped by this organization further, and even as I write this, I hope that the devil himself is taking pointers on how to do business, as Frank McShit has done everything known possible to rape fans and assimilate us to his custom of breaking our will to want a good thing, to continue a tradition of winning.

  52. I find it fun watching Rod and Juan swing so hard every freakin seeing that they almost fall on their asses.

      • nedisajerk says:

Thanks for the bday wish Collie and I forgot who was that other one.

        • it was me. You should demand that the Dodgers win a game to make up for your B-Day. Then again, you might be waiting for a long time before that happens.

        • Sure thing Shad! Birthdays are great. It’s awesome that on this day you came into this world! What a great thing to celebrate! Life is a wonderful thing. Seeing a bird fly, eating some BBQ and having a beer or some sweet tea. Seeing the smile of a cute woman (For me Wifey!!), a nice sunny day, the green grass of a baseball field, watching some dogs play with one another, going on a walk in the hills, etc… Life is an awesome thing and truly a gift! Have a great one & God bless!

          • nedisajerk says:

Thanks Yung and Nelly for the bday wishes and btw North I think my bday cake was stolen by that bum Uribe.

  53. nedisajerk says:

As the Dodgers open their three-game series against the Giants at Kevin Elster Field tonight, all you need to know about tonight’s San Francisco starter is this, from Scott Ostler last month in the San Francisco Chronicle:

The Giants didn’t call [Ryan] Vogelsong right away. The Dodgers did, and made him an offer. Vogelsong asked [Giants’ minor league catching instructor Guillermo] Rodriguez to contact the Giants again and relay this message, in essence: I don’t want to be a Dodger. I am a Giant. If you want me, I’ll sign for whatever you want to pay me.

Vogelsong, 6-1 with a 2.17 ERA this season, has allowed two runs or fewer in 11 of his 14 starts this season. At home, he has a 1.22 ERA in 51 2/3 innings. Thanks to the All-Star break and a shuffling of the rotation, Vogelsong hasn’t pitched since July 8. He was named to the All-Star team, but did not pitch in the game last Tuesday in Phoenix.

I’m one of the ones “guilty” of rooting for the Dodgers to lose. At some point this past winter/spring, I posted that I wanted the Dodgers to finish 42-120 or something like that. Whatever it would have been had they won every game against the Giants, Padres and Angels and lost to everyone else. But now I find myself being, what? Happy is not the right word.
    .
My desire to see the owner driven from the Dodgers is overwhelming, like many of us. And although the most likely instrument of that continues to be the courts at this point, I personally still feel that the constant empty seats attract attention that cannot hurt our side.
    .
All season long, every Dodger loss has not been an emotional downer for the first time in my life. I still get a thrill when Kemp launches one deep and Kersh fools another one with that Public Enemy #1. But, as I said, “happy” isn’t the right word for what I feel when seeing the ninth come and go and the other team celebrates. Satisfying? No. Not really. Perhaps it’s hoping that this loss could be one more nail in McCourt’s coffin.
    .
I’m looking forward to the day when this hell ends. I’m looking forward to the day when we’re all just talkin’ baseball. I’m looking forward to the day when I can treat my family to a day in my old home-away-from-home. It can’t come soon enough. But until then, I will not be upset when we lose. To anyone.
    .
FYI – I finally got DodgerLyrics up and running again. To say that the tech assistance from WordPress is sporadic is an understatement, but they finally got me fixed. I had been saving the songs on a Word document and posted them all tonight. If I missed one of yours, please let me know and I’ll be happy to correct the sleight. To all of you who got their comment(s) “moderated”, I think I’ve fixed them all.

Dodgereric – this was the first Dodgers/Giants game I listened to (we were blacked out on both feeds tonight) where I actually was not upset over the outcome. Bill and Michael both know how we all feel about our owner, and it was just a game we listened to while watching all the action on the other games. Some of the things I read from court today were just sad. In a nutshell, Frank thinks he had everything under and he was in good standing with the fans until MLB came along and messed everything up. What an idiot!!
