Since its on everyone’s mind – who do we root for this series? On the one hand, how can you ever root for the Gnats? On the other hand, we know what Ned’s thinking. A three game sweep by the Gnats almost assuredly means Ned at least won’t be a buyer at the trade deadline. A three game sweep by our boys in blue would almost certainly mean Ned will trade the farm, or what’s left of it. I’m of the opinion even winning two will encourage Ned into thinking he can find the right piece(s) to make a run, even though we’ve already lost a game in the standings since the all-star break, which flies in the face of Ned’s “if we can make up one game a week” scenario.
Billingsley may make the decision easier. He’s been pitching well of late, but not so coincidentally it was with A.J. Ellis behind the plate. Now that A.J. is back in the desert and its Barajas/Navarro, will Billz revert back?

Outside the Dodgers 
I understand where TruMom and Nelly are coming from. Even my daughter says she can’t root for the Giants.
But for me, the deeper we get in a hole, the better. Twelve and a half games out isn’t enough. I’d like to be at least fifteen or sixteen games out this week and next week.
Still, I’ve got this nagging issue – will Ned ever be a seller, even if he’s twenty games out? His ego, or maybe Frank’s ego, just gets in the way of rational thought.
With Ned you never know what the jerk will do. As a seller, he may get rid of good prospects or, even worse, a good player or two that we already have. And, excluding a few pitchers, one or two good players is all we do have 😉 Still, I CANNOT ROOT FOR THE GIANTS, EVER!!!!!
After yesterday’s game, I’m still wondering why Matt Kemp did not ask Ted Lilly to be his pitcher for the HR Derby.

As I said in a different reply, most of us check multiple web sites for Dodger news and views. Once ITD has a new thread, we typically do not comment on the contents of Josh’s post. It is mostly marketing fluff or blue sky platitudes anyway. We just use it as a place to chat among like-minded (or not) fans.
I am glad to see that this blog has had such a good reception after only a few days. You guys “get it”.

I’m beginning to agree with the purpose of this “Outside” blog too. I don’t mind if Josh wants to pursue the social media sites on behalf of his owner and management, but I am totally tired of the spinfucker putting his bland commentary on the MLB blog called “Inside Dodgers”, which one would presume is a blog intended for the fans by major league baseball. The only reason I’m still responding to his pitiful threads is that I don’t want the Dodger front office to feel like they’ve driven off all of us dissenters. So, I will at least leave a hearty F U message for him on each thread.

Each to his or her own but I will never root for the Dodgers to lose. If the Dodgers can make things difficult for the Giants or any other team, so be it. There are 162 games on the schedule and I expect the players to give enough effort to try to win every game.
Nelly, it can’t be easy living with Giants fans these days but their team is getting the job done. Too bad the fans just can’t enjoy the ride and take their wins graciously. And too bad their announcers do not have the class the Dodgers announcers have in not over reacting when the Dodgers win even if it is against the Giants.
lbirken – i replied to you on ITD, but in short, it’s not so much watching the two teams play as it is listening to their announcers. You would never hear Vin say “Grab some pine meat!” after a visiting player strikes out or use whiteout marker to mark over visiting fans. My hubby enjoys listening to Vin more because he learns info about the gnats that he didn’t know. The gnat announcers are too busy commenting on the fans and using their whiteout pin.

I wouldn’t imagine staying up on the east coast this late and seeing the Rays only having 3 hits and 50 AB’s and Pedroia had 3 hit himself but Ellsbury goes 0/8.
The L.A. Times is doing a poll and, I thought you guys could answer this: name the 3 best left-fielders in Dodgers history.
Left Fielder according to Offense or Defense. And do they have to be exclusive to LF or could they of moved. Because there is no true LF on this team right now, and hasn’t been one for at least 20 yrs.
I have been trying to think of the same thing: when did the Dodgers last have a decent left fielder. Sheffield? Not sure who the best might be but Dusty Baker had a pretty good run on some good Dodger teams.
To be honest, we’ve never had a true LF on any team, as far as I can remember. Most started out as a CF and then went to LF and the original LF transferred over to RF. So I’m guessing, other than Baker and some other exceptions, I’d say it’d have to say Manny and Pierre and the former LF Ethier.
I’m thinking Gwynn, Thames, and Gibbons, but I can’t decide in what order.
I’m saying Manny, Andre, and Pierre. Manny for power, Andre for Avg. and Pierre for range. Too bad they all couldn’t be one single player.

The Dodgers have had a lot of good catchers over the years. I never got to see him play but Campy probably is the best. Roseboro was good, Scoscia and Yeager were great defensive catchers and decent enough hitters. But of the ones I saw, Piazza brought the most excitement with his offense. Roseboro, Scoscia and Yeager were not depended on as much for their offense although they got their share of hits. But Piazza’s offense clearly overshadowed his defense, which was adequate.
So in that case, who has been the best defensive catcher and who has been the offensive catcher ever?

Koufax or Kershaw??
Who is the more proficient and strike out master out of the two?
Koufax pitched long before the leagues were completely watered down by expansion. I think by the time its all over, it’ll be comparing apples to oranges. Not saying Kersh won’t have some impressive numbers, but no matter what the yardstick, no one will ever supplant what Koufax did in those 6 magical years. The game’s just not played the same anymore.
My guess is that if Kersh can last some 16 years in the league, he can be one of the all time greats. His stuff is filthy and him cutting back on walks and better while hitting makes him better for the foreseeable future. His wins might be down if he doesn’t get a team of hitters or production behind him, but more so than not, he’ll be revered in line with Koufax, Drysdale, Sutton, Hershiser, Valenzuela, Kershaw.
In his first six years, Koufax was horrible, or mediocre at best with flashes of the brilliance yet to come. He had the misfortune of being a bonus baby, which meant he had to stay on the major league roster for two full seasons. In 1955, at age 19, he had no business being in the show and Walt Alston knew that and did not give him many chances to learn at that level.
Other players resented his $20,000 signing bonus which probably didn’t help his mental attitude much. It was only because the Dodgers were so far ahead in the pennant race that Sandy got as many opportunities as he did.
Kershaw had the advantage to have pitched at least for awhile in the minor leagues which gave him the opportunity to work on his command and control without undue pressure. He should surpass by light years what Koufax did in his first six seasons. He also has the advantage of modern medical care. He might not have to retire at age 30 if he hurts his arm.
Like Enchanted says, Koufax was completely dominant in his last half dozen seasons. No one comes close. But in the context of what could constitute a complete career, there is room for argument. Compare Warren Spahn. He played his entire 21-year baseball career in the National League. He won 20 games each in 13 seasons, including a 23-7 record when he was age 42.
Granted Kersh is still only 22 going on 23, and with already 2 1/2 seasons under him, it’s safe to assume that he’ll get a lot of wins before all is said and done. He is level headed enough to negate any negative things around him, and his wife should help in that department.
What separates Koufax from Kersh is his 4 no hitters and 1 perfect game. His 3 cy youngs are also a seperation, but with this season or next, Kersh will get his 1st cy young. 4 or 5 cy youngs before all is said and done are my thinking. Kersh is throwing gas at a prolific rate and his delivery is stress reducing on his shoulder. (I throw the same way)
Kersh will always be compared to Koufax, but rightfully so, at the end of the day, I feel that he will have other pitchers compared to him.
It was tragic to have Koufax retire so prematurely, and in an age when he could have flourished, he could of been better than he became. Why not 8 no hitters, 2 perfect games, 6 cy youngs, etc. with another 10 years, he could of done it.
With 20 years, Kersh could live that reality.
They aren’t showing the game in either market. The gnats don’t show any home games, even though they are sold out, and they blacked out the Dodger feed from us too -idiots!!!!

Exactly Tru. Also when Dre is on and Matt hits a gapper Dre is usually only going to make it to 3rd. The other way around and Kemp is scoring. Also Dre takes many pitches and works the count so it would give Kemp the opportunity to run. Most of Kemps singles are to LF so if Dre is at 1st and Kemp singles to LF Dre is probably at 2nd. If Kemp is on 1st most of Dre’s singles are to CF or RF (Also it would open up the right side, since they’d be holding Kemp on, for Dre to pull the ball helping his power numbers), that Kemp would probably make it to 3rd. I just think they need to do something to generate some runs.

As the Dodgers open their three-game series against the Giants at Kevin Elster Field tonight, all you need to know about tonight’s San Francisco starter is this, from Scott Ostler last month in the San Francisco Chronicle:
The Giants didn’t call [Ryan] Vogelsong right away. The Dodgers did, and made him an offer. Vogelsong asked [Giants’ minor league catching instructor Guillermo] Rodriguez to contact the Giants again and relay this message, in essence: I don’t want to be a Dodger. I am a Giant. If you want me, I’ll sign for whatever you want to pay me.
Vogelsong, 6-1 with a 2.17 ERA this season, has allowed two runs or fewer in 11 of his 14 starts this season. At home, he has a 1.22 ERA in 51 2/3 innings. Thanks to the All-Star break and a shuffling of the rotation, Vogelsong hasn’t pitched since July 8. He was named to the All-Star team, but did not pitch in the game last Tuesday in Phoenix.

I’m one of the ones “guilty” of rooting for the Dodgers to lose. At some point this past winter/spring, I posted that I wanted the Dodgers to finish 42-120 or something like that. Whatever it would have been had they won every game against the Giants, Padres and Angels and lost to everyone else. But now I find myself being, what? Happy is not the right word.

My desire to see the owner driven from the Dodgers is overwhelming, like many of us. And although the most likely instrument of that continues to be the courts at this point, I personally still feel that the constant empty seats attract attention that cannot hurt our side.

All season long, every Dodger loss has not been an emotional downer for the first time in my life. I still get a thrill when Kemp launches one deep and Kersh fools another one with that Public Enemy #1. But, as I said, “happy” isn’t the right word for what I feel when seeing the ninth come and go and the other team celebrates. Satisfying? No. Not really. Perhaps it’s hoping that this loss could be one more nail in McCourt’s coffin.

I’m looking forward to the day when this hell ends. I’m looking forward to the day when we’re all just talkin’ baseball. I’m looking forward to the day when I can treat my family to a day in my old home-away-from-home. It can’t come soon enough. But until then, I will not be upset when we lose. To anyone.

FYI – I finally got DodgerLyrics up and running again. To say that the tech assistance from WordPress is sporadic is an understatement, but they finally got me fixed. I had been saving the songs on a Word document and posted them all tonight. If I missed one of yours, please let me know and I’ll be happy to correct the sleight. To all of you who got their comment(s) “moderated”, I think I’ve fixed them all.

Dodgereric – this was the first Dodgers/Giants game I listened to (we were blacked out on both feeds tonight) where I actually was not upset over the outcome. Bill and Michael both know how we all feel about our owner, and it was just a game we listened to while watching all the action on the other games. Some of the things I read from court today were just sad. In a nutshell, Frank thinks he had everything under and he was in good standing with the fans until MLB came along and messed everything up. What an idiot!!
