Let’s Play GM

It’s worth noting that we all possess the same instincts that any sane, able thinking body human-being has at his disposal. If we play fantasy baseball, criticize a GM, or just for the heck of it, talk about who we would put in what line-up spot or who we’d fire etc., we are all GM’s.

So with that in mind, and the fact that the Trade Deadline is near, and the hope of everyone that Ned Colletti is a seller and not a buyer and for once in his dumb ass mind doesn’t trade for crap, who can do it better.?

What would you do if you were the GM of this team, and you worked with the team you had?

Feasible and realistic trade scenarios please, and keep in mind that in this business, you work your friends first, so Pitt and Cleveland have to go first.  Work with the constraint that we can buy out, pay off someones salary, PTBDL, cash considerations, etc, and vice-versa for every team if possible, and see if you can improve this team.

NO TRADE CLAUSES are also in effect.

And furthermore, I spent some time thinking about this for a long time, and yet, I couldn’t find a way to place one on top of the other, so I leave it to you OTD bloggers.

Sorry, I’m slow this morning. Do you mean name players you would trade for? Or, just who we want to keep and who we want to get rid of?

As for worst GMs…..Ned, Ned, Ned!

  2. trublu4ever says:

The only players I’d keep are Matt, Kersh and Dre. I know, everybody wants to get rid of Andre but, I don’t think we’d get anything in return for him. I’d probably keep Javy too. Billz is an enigma….we paid him a lot of money and I don’t know whether he is worth it.

    • Well in the case of Pittsburgh, they are looking for an OF bat, and they are in 1st place, ahead of Cincy, Cards, Cubs, Stros, and Brewers, and they do have like 5 Dodgers already on there. He’d help them and be the face of the franchise.

  3. 32and53fan says:

The first names for best GM that come to mind are Branch Rickey, Buzzie Bavasi, and Al Campanis. They operated pretty much before the era of the free agents so it is not fair to compare them with the modern GMs. You gave us a lot to think about. I’ll have to chew on it awhile…

  4. trublu4ever says:

Can hit better than Fecal & Yawn ———————————>

  5. scottinarcadia says:

I would trade anyone I can whose contracts are expiring at the end of this season. A Class A player for Casey Blake? Great. Low A for Barajas? Do it. Now, on to the controversy: Do we trade Ethier now and get some decent prospects while he’s worth something? Maybe, but with Ned at the wheel, everything is a crapshoot.

    • Yes we do. I believe JHall said there are some good catching prospects to be had from Cincy and another club that are deep in that position. Dre’s obviously not happy, and there’s no way they can afford Dre and Matt long term. Gotta start somewhere, and he’s one of the only tradeable chips for value. Sands or Robinson can take his place the rest of the season.

      • scottinarcadia says:

I like Ethier, but I’m guessing he’s not going to get too much better as a player and by the time the McCourt mess is resolved he’ll be too old to pay big money for a guy who can’t hit lefties too well. Probably time to sell high, but Ned’s an idiot.

        • Keep in mind that Ethier has never been that good of a Left Handed Hitter. This season proves it that he’s matured and unless he comes back in the fall with some crazy stats, the conservative thought is trading him now while his stock is high.

      • 32and53fan says:

Al Campanis often said he’d rather unload a player one year early than keep him one year too long. If we could get some high end prospects in return, I would deal Ethier, Blake and Furcal. I guess we would have to wait for Blake to get off the DL before he could be dealt.

        • Doubt we’d get much in return for Furcal, especially with what’s left on his contract. A high A player maybe? If Blake can at least prove he can still play before the end of August they might be able to get a AA player for him, but I doubt anyone of consequence.

Unfortunately, the only tradeable commodities we have are Dre, Kuroda and MAYBE Carroll. No one will touch Uribe and Lilly.

          • Kuroda would need to waive his NTC and 1st of all, why did he get one. In NBA, only KOBE got one, and you’re telling me Kuroda is good enough to warrant a NTC. I don’t think so?

As for Dre, it all depends with who we match up with. With the Indians, we can get Michael Brantley, Asdrubal, and Fausto among other parts.

          • Trade Furcal to the Red Sox for Josh Reddick or to Cincy for Chris Heisey. Anything Major League for him.

          • Blake is just worth a throw in or a PTBDL

      • Our greatest needs are 3B, Catcher, and 2B. To me, it feels that the Dodgers don’t plan on handing the job to DeJesus Jr, so someone needs to come back that’s a 2B. Trade Ethier to Pitts for Neil Walker and other pieces. Don’t ask for the world, but don’t (get garbage either.)

  6. To be honest, I would love to have Paul DePo back in the GM spot over Ned. At least he had some methodical approach to him. And he’d be better suited in this era of younger GM’s and sabermetrics.

  7. selltheteam says:

    Tonight’s ‘Dre-less Lineup

    LF Gwynn
    SS Furcal
    RF Rivera
    CF Kemp
    2B Miles
    3B Uribe
    1B Loney
    C Barajas
    P De La Rosa

Good luck tonight, boys! We’re counting on you! And that means, you, Matt and Rubby!

  8. Ok, so Bumgarner’s a lefty. Even so, Dre is still hitting better against lefties than Uribe is against both lefties and righties. What’s next, resting Matt tomorrow against Lincecum?

  9. Nellyjune says:

I was watching Bay Area Sports program, and I must admit they did a great job in explaining our ownership issues. They explained how this isn’t good for the rivalry, and it isn’t good for baseball. After they explained all the mess we are in, Dylan Hernandez came on the show and talked about the McCourts and how they are a laughing stock of not only the Dodgers but all of baseball. Then they showed a guy wearing a Dodger shirt, but instead of saying Dodgers in the logo, it says bankrupt. Dylan went on to say this is a long process and the chances of us keeping Matt AND Andre are very slim because of the financial constraints. So, let’s enjoy their good and bad days because they are numbered for both of them.

  10. Nellyjune says:

So, hearing all that just now, I am all for Andre and Matt playing for contending teams. As a baseball fan, it’s not fair to them to put them through this. I am all for starting over. I love watching them play for us, but I want them to be happy. I think of Mark Ellis who just got traded a few weeks ago from the A’s to the Rockies. He is happy, he’s playing well again, and the Rockies fans love him. With that said, we are dealing with Ned, and according to Dylan, Ned isn’t going anywhere as long as Frank thinks he owns the team.

    • trublu4ever says:

So sad that we have come to the point wishing them well with another team. I really think th majority of fans will be even more pissed off if Matt and Andre go.Granted, Andre is the best we have as far as trade value goes but, I don’t trust Ned to get anything of value for him. God I HATE FRANK AND NED!!!!!

    • So we really are bound and shackled, hand and foot, until Frank goes away. Oh, but I wish he’d take the several million hints and statements we’ve made and leave!!!

    • JhallWally says:

Nothing good is going to transpire until Frank and Ned are gone. That is the bottom line. Hopefully tomorrow the judge will approve the MLB loan over Franks PayDay loan and we will be one step closer to a happy ending. Until then, all the rumors and trade talk is trivial.

      • trublu4ever says:

Hi Jhall. I heard you were having awful weather there. Was worried about you….heaven forbid you’d be without power! We need you here to partake in tonight’s ballgame 😉

      • Nellyjune says:

It’s just so sad what Frank is doing to this franchise ;(

        • JhallWally says:

Yes, very sad. Keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrows ruling. Hope you and Tru get the game on TV tonight. Good to see you here and hope things are going well for you and yours. How’s Michael doing and what college is he going to attend?

          • Nellyjune says:

Michael is doing very well. He has about 2-3 more weeks of summer ball before he shuts down his pitching. He is finishing up with his Legion Team this weekend, and then he has been added to the Atwater Aviators team for their playoff roster. They are a summer team made up of all current college players. He is still planning on going to Cabrillo College (Santa Cruz area JC), and as an incoming Freshman, he is on the starting rotation as of right now. He will have a better idea of where (1,2,3 or 4) once they get going in fall ball. However, just the fact he is considered a starter and not a reliever is great! He’s training off the field (gym/weights/core) pretty hard, and he will pretty much shut down the pitchng as soon as all these playoff runs are done. So, we’ve been busy on the weekends. Thanks for asking, and it’s always great talking baseball and commiserating about our Dodgers situation with you 🙂

          • JhallWally says:

Wow, that’s terrific. Glad to hear it. Thanks, always a joy to commiserate with you as well.

  11. Nellyjune says:

BTW – I understand sitting Andre. He is obviously in a slump, but hasnt the rest of the lineup (except Matt) been in a season-long slump. My prime examples are Uribe and Furcal. WTF?

    • trublu4ever says:

I know! I don’t get this at all! I don’t care who is pitcchng for the gnats, Andre usually does well in SF.

      • Nellyjune says:

There is a chance he is out for another reason like last time with having a fever and such. So, I am hoping it’s for another reason than just he doesn’t hit well against lefties. Uribe and Furcal aren’t getting hits off of any pitchers. Andre has been making contact (strikeouts haven’t been the issue) and he did get a hit last night. Just sayin’

  12. Nellyjune says:

I have been watching MLBTV off and on all day, and boy did I feel for Roy Halladay. That guy did everything he could to stay in that game, but I am glad he finally let somebody take him out of he game. Regardless of the team, it’s hard seeing players struggle thru heat related issues like that. Glad to hear he is okay.

    • trublu4ever says:

I saw that too. Poor guy.

    • JhallWally says:

Yep. I’m glad to hear he is OK. It’s really exciting and fun to watch he and Cliff Lee pitch.

      • Nellyjune says:

Yes they are!!! Great baseball is great baseball, regardless of the team. And how about those Pirates? I am pulling for them to get that Central Division. Then there’s Grady back on the DL – sad :(. I have been watching the Twins/Indians series. Both teams have some fun players to watch, including Thome and his 600th HR watch.

        • JhallWally says:

I agree. I hate to see the Reds lose, but, it is inspiring to see the Pirates doing well. Those fans really deserve it and I am pulling for them to do well and win the division if the Reds don’t. Very sad to see Sizemore go down again. He’s turning into another Furcal.

          • Nellyjune says:

Well, how about the Pirates take the division and Reds get the wildcard, but that means getting ahead the Cardinals and the Braves, which is no easy task. That NL Central Division is just out there for any team to take, except Houston. The Dodgers are at least better than them and the Cubs 🙂

          • JhallWally says:

Gonna be hard to beat out the Braves for the wildcard. I can live with just about anyone making the playoffs except the Cards and G’nats. LOL!!

  13. thebluesage says:

If I were Ned Colletti, I’d sell off anyone in the bigs under 25 for deferred cash, make my meal of moustache leavings and unsold dollar Dodger dogs since the paychecks are paltry, and then roll over on my back to let boss scratch my tummy ’cause it pleases him so.

    And I’d like it.

  14. JhallWally says:

Just watched James McDonald pitch 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball against the Reds in a 1-0 Pirate win. Geez, what did we get for him? Oh yea, Dotel. Good grief!! Again, way to go Ned.

  15. nedisajerk says:

I knew Vogelsong was good but wow look at these stats at home.

    Home (this year) 9 8 4 1 0 0 0 0 0 58.1 45 8 7 2 15 37 1.08 1.03 .214

  16. nedisajerk says:

Dang look like I got my other wish with Rivera in the 3rd spot but didn’t even mention it.

  17. Nellyjune says:

Andre could have done that 😦

  18. trublu4ever says:

    Crap! Here we go again!

  19. I tried to stay away, but I’m a glutton for punishment.

I see we’re mashing and grinding again tonight.

  20. Looks like I’ll be going to bed early again tonight.

  21. trublu4ever says:

Rubby will have around 50 piitches through 2 innings….short night for him!

  22. The mystery is solved. Dre is sitting tonight because his knee is bothering him. He hyperextended it during spring training and may need arthroscopic surgery during the off season. Also, Mattingly thinks he’s pressing . . . . and frustrated. My question to him is “Who wouldn’t be?”

  23. JhallWally says:

Well, as Beav would say, “That is probably the ballgame.”

  24. OMG, we got a run!!!!

  25. if only for the fact that we have one of the slowest lineups with uribe, furcal, barajas and loney playing today, we would of easily just scored 2..

  26. Even Fecal got a hit!!!! I think pigs are going to fly!!!!!!

  27. hung himself out to dry

  28. trublu4ever says:

    Damn, Rivera…WTF were you thinking?!

  29. the ump is being mighty generous to bumgardner with the strike zone tonight

  30. JhallWally says:

Well, didn’t see that coming. Maybe if Fecal plays well this next week, we can unload him. C’mon Rubby!!!

  31. nedisajerk says:

Wow Ethier is hitting .356 in SF and is this suppose to be a hitter park? Why is he hitting soon good in SF but stuggle vs the Mets in NY?

  32. nedisajerk says:

The Pirates Dodgers does it again.

  33. Who’d have ever thought the best “Juan” Ned would ever sign would be Pierre?

  34. nedisajerk says:

I hate light hitting catcher get a 2 out double.

  35. Just finished watching a fun game between the Twins and Indians. Walk off by my favorite Twin (Danny Valencia). I was listening to ours. Its much better than listening to Krud and Krap. The Twins announcers, however, are a class act!
    .
Hubby is home so now I’m back to watching/listening to them – blah!

  36. JhallWally says:

Just a thought. Vin is talking about the statues of Mays and McCovey. Do you think they will ever put up a statue of Bonds?

  37. Whoulda thunk we’d have ever gotten a .264 BA out of Gwynn?

  38. Nellyjune says:

    Let’s go Dodgers, let’s go!!!

  39. trublu4ever says:

Looks like a 5th inning implosion!

  40. trublu4ever says:

F*ck you Frank and Ned for putting this crap on the field!!!!!

  41. DodgerZona says:

    Hello,

Could not agree more Tru….Thanks alot McCourt and Ned

    Crappppppppp

  42. Ever notice that the rare times this team does score 2-3 runs in an inning that after that its like they pack it up and go home? Like, “There. We’ve done our job for the day”?

  43. Think I’m going to hit it. Pretty much know how this game’s going to end anyway. Catch y’all down the road.

  44. DodgerZona says:

    GoodNight Enchanted

  45. trublu4ever says:

Good grief! It goes from bad to worse!!!!

  46. nedisajerk says:

    I hate this crap.

  47. nedisajerk says:

    Come on Kuo get Crawford.

  48. trublu4ever says:

Time flies like an arrow…fruit flies like a banana 🙂

  49. trublu4ever says:

    Game over!

  50. vl4eccjr says:

POOF! Thar she blows! Or should I say Kuo?

  51. JhallWally says:

    ( | )~~Pffffffffft…Plop!!!

  52. 32and53fan says:

I have the game on DVR. I think I will just watch the pre-game show with Eric Karros and skip the game. Either that or keep my finger on the one minute skip ahead button and blast through the game.

  53. nedisajerk says:

Dang it Donny why you walk Ross? That was the momentum breaker.

    • Nellyjune says:

Have you ever given it thought that the pitcher hates intentionally walking batters and just serves up a pitch to hit just to say “FU Coach!” I have a son that pitcher and that is what he hates most is intentionally walking someone. He understands it’s logistically the right thing to do, but I honestly think he has purposely thrown a pitch right down the middle just to say “I told you not to intentionally walk that guy!” Just food for thought.

  54. Nellyjune says:

Please put me out of my misery now – Good Lord this is agonizing to watch!!! It was much easier on the ears listening than it is on the eyes watching it.
    .
32and53 – just watch pre-game. Watching the game itself is bad for your health.
    .
However, if this helps get rid of Frank, I can handle the suffering having to actual watch the demise. If it were just me watching, I could change the channel and watch Andrew Zimmern and his bizarre foods. However, my hubby is enjoying this game 😦

  55. nedisajerk says:

lol 46 games in a rows the Giants had a soldout? It must be happy when you win a WS than the all those fans increase the attendance in there ballpark.

  56. Nellyjune says:

Food for thought as well. They have been struggling all year. No doubt about that, but they have been playing xceptionally bad since the All-Star, after many of them received those bankruptcy papers in their mailboxes. Maybe something in those papers made them think “FU Frank!”. Dylan Hernandez said himself, depending on what side the judge rules, it will make a huge difference in where the finances stand and how they will get paid. He even mentioned some deferred payments to players not getting made. Frank has screwed this franchise every which way he can, and there is no sign of him giving up. Just perhaps the players have. Not intentionally or physically but they emotionally aren’t invested anymore. Who really knows what they are thinking but some of this doesn’t seem like such a coincidence.

  57. nedisajerk says:

How can Wilson pitch good vs the Dodgers and the Padres always seem to have his number?

  58. nedisajerk says:

Kemp finally got his 1st career hit vs Wilson. To bad Ethier didn’t tied it up.

  59. last time Dodgers lost 6 games in a season series to gnats was 1969, the same night The Brady Bunch premiered.

Simply pathetic to think that we can’t keep a team up long enough to sit down. I literally threw my plate at the TV in disgust of this bullpen and team. Pathetic.

  60. Two thoughts about these games.

    (1) It really hurts to lose to the Giants.

    (2) Wish the crowd wouldn’t chant “Beat LA”: Seems like Frank’s done a great job doing that all by himself.

Maybe Kersh has the magic touch – sure hope so! Good night, all.

  61. nedisajerk says:

I still don’t think Wilson is good but he does get them out.

    • We’ve been missing OUR BEARD since last season.

      That’s our problem.

    • nedisajerk says:

Wilson career ERA/WHIP/BAA as following 3.16/1.32/.235 and he was a 24th rounders in the 2003. Nelly do your family love Wilson more than they love Romo? Romo career numbers 2.50 /0.91/.191. Romo have some ugly numbers this year.

They should’ve had just let Jansen pitch 2 innings and the pitcher spot was going to come up anyway.

  63. JhallWally says:

Well, hopefully we will get the biggest win of the season tomorrow in court. Put a word in with the Big Dodger In The Sky tonight and cross your fingers.

  64. NO MORE BEARD = LOSSES

GNATS WILSON W/ BEARD = WIN
